MLB lost me as a fan years ago. I cannot stand these players making millions.

Won't happen, Peter.MLB has by far the strongest union and will fight to never have a salary cap.Comment

Originally posted by Vinceanity2k3Cleveland should be in the East.We should send a petition to league offices to put us in the Central.Honestly,I cannot forsee the Jays contending anytime soon.
Even though the Sawx and Yanks have soe older players, you know that they will spend and spend like there is no tomorrow and get vitually any player they want.Lets be real,it's hard to compete with these guys.Only hope we got is the farm. And it's either hit or miss with these prospects.
Since I doubt realignment will happen any time soon, I would like to see MLB return to a balanced schedule, with roughly the same number of games against each AL opponent. Teams competing for the same playoff spot (wildcard) but having vastly different schedules doesn't really make sense.

Re: Blue Jays to announce stadium upgrade and payroll increase
Just saw the press conference....
Best news was Rogers upping the payroll.
210mil on payroll over 3 yrs. I'll take 70 mil over 53 mil anyday.
Since this off-season is basically over JP is better saving his dough this season and then having a 75-78 mil payroll the next 2 seasons after that.
Great day for Jays fans.
Too bad next years FA class is extremely weak.
I also like all the new scoreboards they're putting in the stadium.
I noticed Rogers took a jab at Bell.Last edited by VanCitySportsGuy; 02-02-2005, 11:22 AM.Comment

Re: Blue Jays to announce stadium upgrade and payroll increase
Since there has been a wide ranging set of topics since I last posted I will try to touch on them all and add some other things:
Let's start with the misnomer that attendance is declining. This is actually quite the opposite. The attendance is not the best but it's not the worst either. Here are the attendence figures and AL rank for the last 5 seasons.
2000: 1,705,712 10th
2001: 1,915,438 10th
2002: 1,637,900 11th
2003: 1,799,458 11th
2004: 1,900,041 11th
As you can see the numbers are very pedestrian but it seems Toronto has a good solid base for baseball. Knowing how Toronto fans are this is pretty good. Torontonians always cling on to a winner and they DO support losing teams if they're doing anything they can to win. Just look at the attendance for the Raptors over the last couple years.
The thing that is killing the Blue Jays from a profit margin basis is the dwindling TV numbers. Actually that's a bit of a misnomer as well cuz the TV numbers have generally been good tho not as great as the glory years. Last season the team had the worst TV numbers in 25 yrs which is not good. (this could also be why Rob Faulds was quietly shuffled out of the PBP gig tho it looks like it could be worse for us as Jamie Campbell is the favourite for the job ECH!)
As i've said before Torontonians will support a losing team if said team actually tries to improve itself. While the move today to increase budget is a bit puzzling since all the big names are gone it at least shows that Rogers is willing to make an investment. This payroll increase may very well be tied to the fact that Rogers now owns Skydome. The concessions, programs and merchandising sales will directly go into the coffers of Rogers which SHOULD go into payroll hence the increase.
As i've stated elsewhere the cosmetic changes for Skydome has long been overdue. I just hope that the FieldTurf they install is the kind that really simulates grass instead of the crap in Minnesota or Montreal last year. It's going to be weird not seeing the old Jumbotron but I guess a more modern scoreboard was neccessary.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
