    It's done--Cubs sign Burnitz

    sigh.

    From YAHOO's sports page:

So Hendry focused on Burnitz, a player he'd tried to get in 2003. Burnitz is a career .254 hitter with 275 home runs and 845 RBIs in 11-plus seasons in the majors, and he's hit at least 30 homers in six of the last seven years.

He had one of his best years in 2004, leading the Colorado Rockies with 37 homers and finishing second with 110 RBIs. He also hit .307 with runners on base.

``We changed the complexion of our ballclub a little bit,'' Hendry said. ``It makes our club more left-handed, more versatile. It gives Dusty a variety of things to do in the outfield, gives us a lot of balance. We got better defensively in a lot of ways.

``We feel good about the changes that were made.''

Under terms of the deal, Burnitz will make $4.5 million this year. There is a mutual $7 million option for 2006 that includes a $500,000 buyout. Burnitz doesn't get the buyout if the team exercises the option and he declines it.

The contract also includes $250,000 per year in performance bonuses based on games started.

"We got better in the OF"? WTF! Did he not see that botched play by Burnitz when he was with the Dodgers where he missed the ball and chased it around like it was keystone cops? Funny stuff, only now its not so funny. 5 bucks says hell regret signing here. Hes going to get booed like crazy I bet. Itll be so bad hell like playing on the road more than at home.

        Thank goodness.

The Pirates were interested and talking to Burnitz, but the minute the Sosa deal went through, the Cubs became the leader. No way I would want anything to do with Burnitz on my team. Check out these numbers:

        HOME - Coors Field
        .344 BA
        24 HR's
        68 RBI
        .386 OBP
        .670 SLG
        1.057 OPS

        AWAY from Coor's Field
        .244 BA
        13 HR
        42 RBI
        .327OBP
        .448 SLG
        .775 OPS

Burnitz will produce just like Barrett did last year. Everyone was upset about the Barrett deal and he turned out to be better than expected. We need a closer / some relievers and this team will be good.

Barrett was a young prodigy who had never been given a full-time job.

Burnitz is a 36-year-old free swinger who has started everywhere he's been.

Can someone tell me why in the hell the Cubs would play so strong to get Burnitz but are likely going to ignore Huff (perennial all-star potential), and even Kearns and Byrnes? The last two guys still have question marks, but the three of them together do not have as many holes in their swings (and defense) as Burnt-sh*tz does.

                        GOD!!!!!! AAAAGGGHHHHH!!!
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET ME OWN THE CUBS FOR ONE YEAR!!!! JUST ONE!!!!!!!!

Huff would be real nice but the Pirates would probably have to give up a ton to get him.
