I dont get how this is even obstruction. The pitcher was obstructing the runner because he was in the runners way? The pitcher had the ball for 99% of that play. So let's say he was going to tag the runner, would he be not allowed to because he'd be obstructing him?

He didn't have the ball anymore when the runner moved to avoid him. Obstruction is specifically blocking the runner without the ball. If he's going to tag the runner, he's obviously doing that with the ball, so there is no obstruction. If he's tagging him without the ball, though, yes that would be obstruction.

But it's a terrible call because the pitcher was outside of the baseline so the only way he was obstructing was if the runner was also running out of the baseline.

There needs to be some common sense applied here. Not having the ball for the split second he impeded the runner had no impact on the play

Exactly. Not like what he did impacted the play at all. It's like calling pass interference on a play when the ball was thrown 20 feet away from the play. The guy was clearly not going to catch or make an attempt to catch that ball.

What did I miss that caused them to hit Arenado?

EDIT: Was it in retaliation to them hitting Harper on accident last night? Seriously?

Good throw by Carlson to get Joyce out at 3rd and end the top of the 10th. You never make the 3rd out at 3rd, come on Joyce.

Red birds win on a wild pitch. Now Atlanta is in 1st place all alone in the NL East.

A baserunning mistake by Joyce and a wild pitch by Hale and the Cards walkoff winners.

Let's see if Baltimore can get the 2nd walk-off win of the afternoon.

And a bunt by the Orioles gets the winning run 90 feet away with 1 out. The one good thing about this extra innings rule is the AL teams actually play real baseball by playing small ball. Now maybe they'll adopt the no DH rule next.

And now the O's walk it off. Why did they not walk Mullins there???

I think I have said enough about the Ghost runner rule on here.. but again It is just ruining enjoyable games. that dodgers padres game was ruined because of it last week. a pitching duel game also is in ruin because you are letting a ghost runner on 2nd who hasn't been there all game. and if you take the lead. you still can't celebrate being the away team because now the home team gets a chance.

It's simple really if it really is about 'time' then why not just play REAL baseball till we get to the 4 hour mark. that way a 0-0 game can keep going. then we can play 'pretend baseball' at the 4 hour mark if after the 9th innings the sores are still tired. then do you stupid ghost runner on 2nd.

then to make it more exciting in the next innings have your ghost runner on 3rd.. if it is still tired. have 2 ghost runners on. then bases loaded.. if you want to pretend baseball make it exciting.

What does the "ghost" runner have to do with the away team not being able to celebrate taking the lead because the home team still gets a chance?

The home has always gotten a chance to tie/win the game in extra innings if the away team scored.

In the pat if you took the lead in extra innings you would celebrate knowing that it probably is enough to win the game now and your closer will do the job.

Now it's 'oh yeah we got a lead but we already have a ghost runner on 2nd now I am already nervous for it to be tied up within 2 at bats' or a homer loses it. psychologically it feels different. the whole point of the stupid thing was to save time. the dodgers Padres game of 5 hours long didn't speed it up. that rule needs to go. I can deal with the DH being in the NL it has pros and cons. but I can't find any pros at all for the ghostrunner rule
