Man did I kick over the hornet's nest with my 3 game WC series pitch. I like the current format and I think it's a huge improvement over the previous set-up where division titles were almost meaningless (you can ask Matrix, I've had arguments with him before over this very subject); I just think in an ideal world, you'd tweak it a bit to strip out some randomness that hurts the occasional dominant WC team that found themselves stuck in the same division as the best team in baseball. That's all, nothing more. You'd still go all-out to win your division in order to avoid having to play a 3 game near-crapshoot series just to make it to the LDS. That's way more perilous for a team's WS chances than 1-2 extra days of rest. Unless I'm missing something here, I've never heard teams complain that the nearly week long All-Star break "throws off their rhythm." Most are glad for the breather after the grind of the 1st half.

No need to make mountains out of molehills.

It's not that difficult to understand.

The #5 team that finished 16 (or any games) back of the #4 should be the one who is told "why didn't you win your division?"

They're the ones who should be excluded from the playoffs.

The Cardinals absolutely should have won their division, then they wouldn't be where they are. That's whole point but both sides will just keep going in circles saying the exact same words thinking they're the ones in the right.

I don't get the "so you're telling me this team should've won their division and they wouldn't be in the Wild Card" like it's some kind of GOTCHA!

1000%, exactly. If they win the Central, ta-da, they're not playing an elimination game.


The Sox had a huge lead over the summer, they didn't get the job done well enough to stay ahead, but they did good enough to make the Wild Card, which they'll likely lose. Too bad, they could've had a guaranteed 3 "real" playoff games of they did what they were supposed to.

I don't have the numbers, but I bet quite a few people tuned into all 4 Game 162s yesterday, but sure, it's bad for the sport.

Can't wait to have this conversation word for word next year.

I am personally fine with the 2 wild cards. Expanded playoffs I want no part of.

I was saying that about any team that complains about having to play a one game elimination wild card game. It wasn’t directed solely at the Dodgers.

And direct me to where I said, or even suggested, the Dodgers should be excluded from the playoffs???

I do agree it's insane that the Dodgers are forced to play a 1 game winner advances game after the season they've had. But I don't like the idea of "divisioms" in any sport. I wish they'd move to, everybody play everybody, top however many advance and seed them by record.

But I'll be watching and enjoy the (hopeful) suspense all the same
