When I see Bonds' 73 homers in a season. The first thing I think.......steroids.

When he breaks Aaron's record, the first thing I will always think......steroids.

Aaron does not like Bonds at all, and steroids is the primary reason. He said he won't be attending the game the record is broken.

Forever it will be. Bonds = Steroids. All of his considerable talent and ability will be a distant second.

That's just the way it is.

Let's tap the break a bit. Willie Mays, Ted Williams, and Hank Aaron were better, and without juice.

                        Re: Barry speaks

Have I always feared Bonds a hitter? Totally. From '88 or so when I first took notice of him as a kid just beginning to fully embrace the great game, yeah, I knew that he was a guy not to be messed with at the plate. And then when he really blew up in the early '90s, his bat speed and ability to turn a game around really impressed me, and being a Braves fan watching the two NLCS we played against Pittsburgh, scared me, as well. Up until this whole Balco situation went crazy on us a couple years ago, while I despised Bonds as an individual, I was still very willing to throw out his name as being one of the best players I had ever seen. And even last season, as I sat in the rightfield seats at Turner Field and watched those two massive homers he hit off of Russ Ortiz sail well over my head and into the back rows of the stands, I was still amazed by what he was capable of, beit from illegal means or what. But, I can't respect the guy anymore. Are some of the things he does amazing? Yes, totally. Can we say that everything he has accomplished over, let's say, the past five seasons can be attributed entirely to steroid use? No way. I don't know how long or how much Bonds delved into whatever it was he "didn't know" he was taking, but if you showed me a picture of Barry with the Pirates or even with the Giants for the first couple seasons, and he was standing next to the likes of Canseco, McGwire, Caminiti, and the ilk who all looked like mountains, I would totally say he wasn't using performance-enhancing substances. So, I gotta say up until around '98 or so, I think Barry accomplished everything based on his own sheer talent. And even with his current pace from that point on, he would still be approacing or right at 600 homers by this point. Surefire hall of famer, even without any enhancements.

But, ok, that entire paragraph was nothing more than a huge ramble. I don't like Barry. I never have. But, he is still one of the best players I have seen in my generation. It's unfortunate that he used any substances to improve his performance, because, honestly, he didn't need it.

Believe me, in no way am I endorsing what Bonds, Giambi, and everyone else have done here. I actually wrote two papers in college last year about the subejct of cleaning up baseball and the measures that need to be taken, so I do hold it to be an enormous black-eye on the sport. But, at the same time, I do think that Bonds is a phenomenal athlete who probably did something that he didn't even have to do in order to boost his stats. And I do think this is a huge piece of evidence that shows just how selfish and ego-driven he is.
