If either controlling owner Mark Walter or President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman leave the Dodgers organization during Ohtani’s tenure, then Ohtani gains an opt out possibility.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I doubt if they are spending money like this that they are anywhere close to going broke.Yeah, I think if all the crazy stuff he says happens then we should be more worried about lines for break and milk. Ohtani will just take what he's already earned (read: millions of dollars) and play/live in Japan.

The going bankrupt is an extreme but it could happen if the stock market crashes, their momey they are supposed to set aside is then way under funded. They have others that they have deferred payments to so it starts to snowball. Market crashes and people don't travel to the stadium, people don't watch on TV because they cut spending and cable/streaming MLB.

It's not that it will happen but you are looking at a 20 year period until the contract is paid. It's a long time and all the risk is on the player and 0 on the Dodgers.

Here are the rough numbers if you need to see why this is a bad precedent.

      Total $700
      1st 10 years - $2/yr
      2nd 10 years - $68/yr

      Dodgers
~$46/yr is supposed to be set aside but no real rules on this

      2033 - Dodgers have $460 set aside
      2034 - Dodgers pay $68, $46 from above + $24 new money

So in 2034 they have to come up with $240 over the next 10 years. If the investments had good returns, they may have enough money to cover that. If not, they will need to fund the new money and the amount they are under the $460.

For 1 player it is fine but the Dodgers are starting to abuse this. Who knows how much they will have done this by then. Look at how pensions have failed and those are in the billions.

So if he opts out, what happens with all the money that's waiting until the end of the 10 years?

I heard/read somewhere, when a contract is deferred the money is held into an escrow account.

If he’s deferring $68 million per year I’d imagine he gets $68 million for every year he was with the team before opting out

Well don't I have a deal for you?

Brewers and Royals just made a blockbuster.

Brewers receive: right-handed reliever Taylor Clarke.

Royals receive: infielder Cam Devanney and right-handed reliever Ryan Brady.

                        Dodgers sound desperate...

Cubs were rumored to be aggressive this off-season... so far, crickets.
                        Australian Rules Football...just sayin'

The return for Glasnow/Margot seems light…I don’t know anything about the players going back, but I would expect more volume.

Glasnow has never thrown over 130ip, right?

                            Margot is...fine?

With an extension I would've thought one more top prospect, but honestly... Rays win this deal by the end if it I bet.

Really like what the Tigers are doing this offseason, could be a sneaky team in the AL Central.
