Actually, in the same game, Pokey Reese made a very similar play, in the same area of the stadium. Reese has better range though, so he didn't go flying into the seats full sprint, he did take a nice tumble into the stands though.

Ingore me being a Red Sox fan, because I did. I used statistical evidence, not bias crap like "Go BoSOXz, stankees suck!!111. lol. Jetsuck and A-suck are gay!!11 lol." I know, I do a spot on impression of a immature Red Sox fan, tell me about it.

It seems to be pretty well documented that Jeter has pretty poor range. Although, he did have one of his best defensive years this year, which could be because he had Rodriguez playing along side him. I can't find you exact stats though, as I'm not really sure where to find them, but I've seen them from lurking around Sons of Sam Horn.

If Jeter is such a mediocre shortstop than how in the world did he win a Gold Glove? How many does Tejada have?

Rafael Palmeiro won the Gold Glove award for the first base position in 1999. How many games did he play at first base in 1999? 28. Should I go on?

Point taken from the previous poster. The Gold Glove is based more on reputation and offense rather than just defense alone.

Here's a good article from Rob Neyer discussing Jeter's fielding. It was written in 2001.

                        EDIT- Here's another:

Has Derek Jeter really improved his defense this season? Color at least one man skeptical.

And if he had cracked his face open, we'd be talking about what a dumb **** he is. You have to respect the effort, but it really wasn't necessary to sprint into the stands.

And just to continue the hating, would someone please remind me how great his postseason play is? I mean, percentage-wise, he's better in the regular season. It's not like he elevates his game, he plays on the same level he usually does, for the most part.

And I might be missing something, but the only "big plays" I can think of are that homer against Arizona in 2001 and that play at home against Oakland, which was just as much Jeter's brilliance as Giambi's stupidity.

Someone please try to set me straight.

Um, anyone could attempt that play... it happens that Jeter was able to get to the ball before finding his way in the seats.
