I remember when he pitched at A ball after he was trying to make it back that he played the outfield or DHed days that he didn't pitch sometimes.

I would have liked to have seen him stick with pitching. He did pretty good from what I heard last year when he was called up other than one bad outing and is still 25. He was awesome his rookie year.

I really can't think of anything I've seen to compare this to.
i can think of the reverse, Brooks Kieshnick going from outfield bust to Brewers reliever/PH, but the only other situation I cna think of involves some chubby fella named George.

Yeah he was only 21 at the time of his disastrous 2000 postseason. He had had a good year as a rookie but perhaps Larussa wasn't wise to throw him into the fire like he did. Hindsight's always 20/20 though.

Who knows, maybe he will be a decent OF, he is still just 25. He did hit .250 with a couple home runs that same 2000 season.

Here's another reverse version of this and Blue Jays fans should thank their lucky stars that it happened. Dave Stieb was originally signed as an OF! He was a terrible hitter and his defense wasn't so hot either. One day one of the scouts saw him throwing the ball around and suggested he try pitching. That turned out to be the best advice for Stieb as he became the winningest pitcher in Blue Jays history.

I think Ankiel DID try to stick with pitching but clearly he wasn't making any progress. This could be the last ditch attempt at saving his career so I applaud him trying to get back to the show in any way. I feel sorry for him tho. I thought that La Russa and Duncan really destroyed his confidence in the 2000 Playoffs.

I heard on the radio that Ankiel had 10 HR's in 100 ab's during a DH stint in AAA, also hitting .280, so he can have a decent bat, and it's obvious he won't fix his control issues enough to be a major league pticher. Hope he does well, this would be a good story.
