It is also in the article I linked,

Brooks Kieschnick and Ron Mahay have had success going from OF to P, maybe Ankiel can have the same success going from P to OF. Who knows, if all goes well within the next couple of seasons we might see a Cardinals OF of Ankiel, Jim Edmonds and John Gall.

Thank god for his sake that he plays here because any fans in any other city would show him little support if in fact he does make the team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ankiel does make the team. His defense might be a little shotty, but he definately has a good bat.

Ok, his great season hitting came in Johnson City, Appalachian League. A far cry from an Advanced League like AAA. Many questions have to be answered with him. What is his ceiling as a hitter? Is he a good enough athlete to learn a completely new position (he DHed in Rookie ball and played 1b for the US Jr. National team)? If he can't play the OF, will his bat make up for his shortcomings? Ankiel put up a 674 OPS in his one major league year. That's acceptable for a 5th OF in the NL if he can play exceptional defense and help on the basepaths. He can't do either right now, and will never be more than an average runner, it isn't his body type. So let's hope he clears waivers, and reclaims his career in the minors, as an OF, or maybe glorified DH. I'll root for him.
