Interesting, I just read today in the book The Thinking Fan's Guide to Baseball about how great of a CF Willie Mays was, in that he was one of the best (if not the best) at positioning himself, and oftentimes he would actually get a jump on the ball before it was even pitched!

So in other words I would say, hey, Willie Mays!

Seinfeld Season 4 .. out on DVD May 17!

Mays is the greatest player ever in some peoples minds. I think he may be too.

It's very hard to compare players in different ERA's but if I had to pick the best player of all-time, I would go with Babe Ruth.

He was a dominant hitter and decent pitcher.

You'll never ever find a player that hits 714 HR's and has 98 wins on his resume.

If we're talking best player of all time i'd still say Mays. Why? you may ask, well he played great defense, could hit for power, had a lot of speed and was a leader for his team.

The one knock I have against Mays is that he never produced in the playoffs. It's a shame a player of his calibre never even got the chance to play in the World Series.

Looking at retrosheet.org, Mays played in 4 World Series .. but was on the losing end each time.

1951 NYG (lost 4-2 against NYY)
1954 NYG (lost 4-0 against CLE)
1962 SF (lost 4-3 against NYY)
1973 NYM (lost 3-4 against OAK)

But you are right about his WS performances, he hit a mere .239 in 20 games, stole just 2 bases, and amazingly never hit a WS home run.

Seinfeld Season 4 .. out on DVD May 17!

That's correct he did play in the WS several times. I couldn't believe I forgot about "the catch" off Vic Wertz.

I know some people hate this argument, but whether it's fair or not some would knock Mays because he doesn't have a ring.
