This whole off-season the Cubs have been selling to their oh so gullible fans that the reason they lost last year was because of the 'bad guys'. Alou, Sosa, and of course Steve Stone and Chip Carey cuz they thought that Ray Oswalt was pitching good one day and *gasp* actually SAID SO on the air in a game the Cubs blew during a critical series against the Astros.
So instead of getting better in the offseason, the team got rid of the bad apples and the evil broadcasting team and signed nobody to replace the talent they lost. But they did raise ticket prices, so at least they got that going for them.
Oh and it was great to hear Stoney on ESPN. If he's a regular, then the nation is in for a treat. The man knows situational baseball better than any broadcaster I've ever heard. He will be missed! Except by Dusty and Jim Hendry that is.PSN: JISTIC_OS

Some players even called the braodcast booth DURING the games to complain. Way to focus guys!

Yes and no. I think they still wanted him as he is kind of an icon and they do recognize that but they were in a situation to mend fences. I remember a meeting with him, Hendry and Dusty. They probably wanted him to tone down the criticism as some sort of compromise but being the pro he is he wouldnt do it. Whether or not he was "run out of town" is subject to debate. I think they wanted him and wanted him to change but the question is would they have tolerated him if he didnt change. I sense they would have until they had to mediate between the mgr (ie Dusty or the guy who will replace him when the Cubs are losing this year) and Steve again. But I think Steve recognized this as a bad situation, being the pro he is, and so he walked away.Comment

Re: Steve Stone on ESPN?
it is a big loss. I used to enjoy listening to him. He would say whats goin to happen before it happened. Good to see hes on the score now. If Dusty woulda stepped in last year and kept his bullpen off the phone, maybe he'd still be around. The guy gets paid to speak his mind. The fans respected that and it wasnt the same lovey dovey ron santo talk. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy listening to Pat and Ron, but Stoney called it like he saw it.PSN - tc23Comment

Re: Steve Stone on ESPN?
Im going to miss Steve a lot but Im really very happy Skip is gone. In any case, I hope Steve is able to do national games so I can still watch him...it would be great if he could replace McCarver or any knucklehead ESPN currently has. My alarm is going to go off soon.Comment
