There's a reason I've lost a lot of interest recently in the game I've loved for many years (steroids being the other part).

A salary cap and salary basement needs to be implemented. How's a 35 MIL payroll going to compete with a 100 MIL payroll let alone a 200 MIL payroll? the only way is to build from within, but when you can't pay for top draft picks, what's the point? Forcing a 150 MIL cap and 55 MIL basement would fix a lot of the problems we see today. Not everything, but it's a start.

It says a lot when the Pirates have been around for over 110 years and there longest losing streak was 8 straight years. That was until now. This year will be 13 and next year will be 14 and the year after will be 15. Then some of the young stars the Pirates have will be able to leave. You think Jason Bay and Oliver Perez are going to stay? Nope, especially when Perez is a Boras client. Time to rebuild a 85-90 loss team. It's a vicious cycle that will never end until something is done.

Needless to say, I'm fed up with the state of Major League Baseball.
I know where you're coming from. One of the teams I root for is in the same division as the 2 biggest spenders in baseball. But the ironic part is that GM's, Presidents, and fans will complain but once the sides get reversed they also jump ship.

I'll use my Jays as an example. JP Ricarddi likes to complain about the rising salaires and payrolls in baseballs but guess what .... ownership just approved a 3 year budget of 210 mil which means the Jays payroll will be about 70-75 mil next season, and 85-90 mil two seasons from now. By the 3rd year their payroll will most likely be in the top 10. I haven't heard one single complaint from JP about getting more money to spend on payroll. The fans that have harped about rising salaires haven't complained either.

Here's a good article by Stark where he says parity does exist in baseball and he backs it up with evidence
    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...son&id=2010302

Also a commissioner can't force a salary cap because it has to be agreed upon by the owners and the MLBPA. The owners are the boss of Bud Selig, and if they don't like what he's doing, then they would just fire him.

Also small/low payroll teams have to build from within but even that doesn't always make financial sense. Beane had to trade away Hudson before he had 6 years of service time because abritration would have been too pricey. I wouldn't be surprised if Perez is dealt 2 years from now because of the potential arbritation salary. And you can also look at the Twins, because they wanted to lock up Santana long-term, they didn't have the budget to keep Koskie.

I'm not a fan of a salary cap, so I would like to see a stiff luxury tax in MLB. The current tax is a complete joke just like their steroid policy. The last CBA just proved the majority of baseball owners are liars about their ecomonics. A lot of them were crying about the rising salaires and then they agreed to a luxury tax that is laughable. My Red Sox had a 40 man payroll of 134.5 million and they only ended up paying 3.1 million in tax last season. Before the CBA was signed, I thought it would contain a dollar for dollar tax at a threshold such as 75 mil. A new CBA needs to have a min. payroll and a stiff tax, too bad I don't see it happening.

There will always be weak sisters (D-Rays, Royals, Pirates, Brewers, etc..) with the current MLB CBA and I don't see things changing in the future.

I guess it is the fans choice, you either continue to cheer for a losing ball club or you start cheering for another team that has a better chance to win year in, year out.

I can't change man! 28 years of Pittsburgh has me bleading black and gold. Steelers, Pirates and Penguins are the only teams I recognize! I don't think that will ever change.

AF - Oh yeah, I read that article by Stark. He said that GM's unanimously listed only 4 teams that are hopeless (KC, PGH, COL and TB). I'm not sure I buy that. I can come up with a pretty good list of teams that I guarantee won't make the playoffs this year. I don't know enough about the minor's for these teams to claim they won't be contenders in the future though. Although it doesn't sound like the future was considered in that article since the Pirates have a lot of talented players in the minors. Of course talent doesn't always pan out.

It just seems like the same 5-7 teams are the only one's who have a shot to win it all year in and year out. Sometimes a FL comes along and disrupts that 5-7 team flow, but that type of team doesn't usually stick around for numerous years.

There will be a somewhat of a cap in 2006. Teams over the luxury tax limit will not only be fined even more heavily, they will lose their top draft picks.
