This is just great. Why are fans such idiots. Hitting a player trying to field a ball, what an idiot. And then he starts cussing Sheff out. Sheff did the right thing.

Now comes our punishment, listening to this **** everyday.

That is exactly the case. Baseball Tonight spent the first fifteen minutes of the show talking to any and every ESPN-related person at Fenway getting the same exact story and description from each. It was horrible overkill. Especially considering how much they let it greatly overshadow a great story like the return to DC.

Its sad for it to come to this, but MLB has to start putting gates in front of the fans or somthing, what if a player "any team" gets even somewhat injured?

            Yup. Basically from my perspective:

The fan looked like he was going to reach for the ball but never bent over and brushed Sheffield's face as Sheff bent over to retreive the ball. I don't think you can conclusively say what the fans intention was. Sheffield obviously felt like the fan took a swing at him and reacted by shoving him. He then turned and threw the ball back in. After throwing the ball he confronted the fan again but restrained himself while security quickly intervened.

I don't think that fan had any intention of going for the ball. You'll notice that whenever anybody tries to get a ball in the corner they lean over the wall and reach down. This guy just stuck his arm out and took a swipe at Sheffield. Absolutely shameful.

It's clear as day that they guy in the GAP sweater dumped his beer over on Gary. Clear as day.

I think the old man who swiped for the ball and knocked Gary in his face is one lucky soul. Gary could've creamed the old man. I don't think the old man meant any harm. Because as he swiped and missed, he kinda snapped his finger as to saw, oh I missed it.

But no way should he lean over the field for a ball that's in fair play like that.

And your initial reaction from being elbowed in the face and having a beer dumped on you would be to pummell the first person in sight.

                      Kudos to Gary.

And I really thought Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson and Jermaine O'Neal taught sporting event goers a nice little lesson back in November. I really thought they would've learned by now.

I guess someone is going to really have to get stomped out for people to realize that they're not paying to participate in the games. They're there to watch it.

Or they could simply force all ballparks to cut off beer sales at a certain point. This happened in the bottom of the eighth, if they had even cut off sales at the stretch, the whole thing likely wouldn't have happened. Or at least wouldn't have been heightened by the "alleged" beer tossing that happened after the initial incident. Hell, I even think cutting off sales at the stretch is too late, I would say between the top and bottom half of the fifth would likely be the most effective place to stop. Or, they could do the sane thing, quit worrying about the almighty dollar, and ban all alcohol sales at every sporting event.

Tom Caron and Dennis Eckersley disagreed on the NESN postgame. They said they didn't believe the fan had any malicious intentions.

Again, you can't conlusively say what the fan was trying to do but either way he shouldn't have been in the field of play.
