    Re: 2006 Philadelphia Phillies Thread

Izzy was having control problems in the 9th during last night's game. I told my wife, Lieberthal would come up and swing at the first pitch. He did, and the pitch was nowhere near a strike. He then hits a weak grounder on the second pitch to end the game.

    He lacks any baseball sense.

I thought this team would lose a bunch of high scoring games this year because of their pitching.

We have 2 runs on 5 hits, at home, through 8 innings against Marquis, Rincon, Hancock, and Flores.

Ugly 0-3 start, but these guys are going to bounce back. Way too talented to fall too far back. And we got 159 games left.

Gavin Floyd is going to pitch next game. Should be interesting to see how he fares this year.

4 games and our starters have pitched a total of 16 innings. That's hot.

This team doesn't deserve a thread.

Ryan Madson gets his first start of the year today. Hopefully he's as effective as a starter as he was as a reliever.

I am not seeing today's game on my cable guide anywhere..

It's a poor day here weatherwise and one that would be ideal to taking in a baseball game.. And yet, I don't see it listed.

CBS is showing the Masters, and the regional Philly channels don't seem to be showing it?

Madson pitched great, and Abreu finally comes through in the clutch.

                    1-4!

                      Re: 2006 Philadelphia Phillies Thread

So we're 1-4. We had a rainout on Saturday and were also off Tuesday on the day following our home opener. It's the 6th game of the season. And Manuel decides to juggle his lineup and play a freaking minor league squad while benching Howard and Burrell against a right-handed fastballer. And in Howard's place, Manuel plays the right-handed hitting Gonzalez. Against a RHP.

                      WTF.

After 6 games I've come to the conclusion that any true fan of this team should be rooting for them to utterly and completely tank until it results in Manuel's firing. With the worst manager in baseball, in addition to the worst 7-8-9 in baseball, it's virtually impossible for this team to contend. So we must rid ourselves of dead weight and the only way to do that is by losing.

Manuel (hopefully), Bell, and Lieberthal will all be gone by season's end. Only then does this team have any chance in hell of winning anything.

I honestly think the Phillies will be alright. Despite managerial decisions, this team does have youth, and while it's hard to agree with the decisions made over the weekend, I think they will turn it around.

I am not drinking Kool-Aid, and am generally critical of the Phillies lack of talent; but this year I think they will turn it around nicely. This is partly due to the fact that the season just started and I refuse to write them off after the first week, and also due to the fact that they do have talent and youth, and are a better team than their current record indicates.

Some random thoughts on the Phillies after 13 games.

                              - David Bell sucks, especially against RHP. Why did we get Nunez? Every time Bell comes up with a man on first base and less than two outs, he should bunt. Every single time.
                              - There's an article today about how we rely on the HR and can't manufacture runs. No ****. That article could have been written any day within the past 3 years. If only we played at a park that catered to the HR. Wait, we do? Then why are we 1-6 there this year?
                              - If Bobby Abreu is a gold glove outfielder, I'm the next American Idol.
                              - Geary is not, and will never be, a major league caliber pitcher. But amazingly, Charlie uses him when a game's outcome is still in question. It usually isn't anymore after he pitches.
                              - The Phillies made the first out of last night's game at home. Think about that for a second.
                              - Our bullpen ERA is 6.15. Predictable, but pathetic.
                              - Our AVG with RISP is now a league worst .185. This has only been a problem for, oh, ever with this current nucleus of players.
                              - Facing a RHP last night, Rowand batted 2nd and Burrell batted 4th while two of our best LH bats hit 5th and 6th. I think Charlie is using a granite tablet instead of a lineup card and therefore can't make changes on a nightly basis.
                              - Charlie refuses to pinch-run for Lieberthal and refuses to pinch-hit for Bell. Why is this?
                              - Did anyone actually NOT see last night's loss coming? For the past few seasons, every time this team has a successful road trip, they come home and fall flat on their faces against a bad opponent at home. I predicted last night's atrocity with ease.

**** this team. Just over 20K paid attendance for last night's game, the smallest paid crowd in CBP's short history. Hopefully the fans continue to stay away and the team continues to flounder until the team is imploded because this bunch of sadsacks is going absolutely nowhere.
