New York could offer a package that includes some combination of young pitchers Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey along with outfield prospects Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez.

Still would do it... considering Reyes wouldn't be touched, and you have him, Wright, and Beltran locked up for at least 4-5 more years, AND a top flight starter at the head of the rotation...

I really don't understand what is so special about Gomez or Martinez... and who else you want in the rotation.. Jon Lieber?? Kyle Loshe?? uhmmm....... no thanks.. Any pitcher you look at the other team will want top prospects...


On another note, looks like the market on Paul LoDuca really fell.... about to sign with the Blue Jays to be a BACKUP catcher

Perhaps no player's stock this season has fallen faster than Paul Lo Duca's. The Mets seemingly were on an Anybody But Lo Duca campaign, re-signing his backup, Ramon Castro, then trading for Johnny Estrada and Brian Schneider. Lo Duca, a free agent, is talking with the Blue Jays as well as the Nationals, but the Jays might not offer him enough playing time when Gregg Zaun is under contract for $3.75 million.

Some Mets thoughts.

Although I love having Paulie these past two years, I can understand now why the Mets wanted to stay away. Even though I'm guessing that he was one of the 250 plus players that tested positive in 2005, this past year's production did fall back and he does look like a candidate that will have health problems going forward. Needless to say, some of the rage he exhibited played against us more than once. I would have been more supportive of him if his "fire" somehow saved them from their collapse.

Eckstien's recent signing for $4.5 M and one year is a laughable situation. Was the move to quickly gobble up Castillo for 4 years too fast? It would have been a huge gamble to let Castillo walk away at the higher price and expect Eckstien to settle for something less. I have to admit, even I was surprised that this was the best offer he could get.

Even though there's interest in Prior, Livan, or Colon if I had to find lightening in a bottle it would probably be Freddy Garcia even though he won't be available until May/June and maybe even Dotel even though he can't stay healthy these past 3 seasons. Also, the recent release of Otsuka from Texas is strange and maybe a red flag of some sort regarding his shoulder problems.

oh my god... Minaya now deserves to be out of a job ... they are going after Kyle Loshe????? so you pass on some better FA pitchers (Colon, Hernandez) and want this bum?? Not to mention picking up a relief pitcher with a 7 ERA from TB?? great..

I saw that!! To "compensate for the high payroll." What the left out was "despite the fact we haven't done anything and lost a decent left-handed starter."
