With this performance and the last Beckett looks like he's gone back to pitching like he can, hope he can keep this up for the rest of the season.

Buchholz is looking great right now (1.30 ERA in AAA), it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he got called up.

Bring Buchhulz up and send Big Papi down?

        No...

Big Papi will not get sent down to AAA, that would completely destroy his confidence. And there is no way he would personally allow it since he has the right to refuse.

It doesn't make sense to bring Buchholz up and not send down another pitcher. Who would get sent down? Lester, Beckett, Dice-K, Wake, Penny? With Smoltz 3 weeks away it wouldn't make sense to bring up Buchholz only to send him down again in a few weeks.

All I'm concerned about is getting into the playoffs. I think that if we can do that then we have a very good shot of beating most teams.

Jon Lester looking "special" through 6 innings ...

Edit: and a third of an inning later, no hit bid is no more. Great game for Jon though ...

He has been sensational tonight. I have tickets for the game on Thursday and I'm hoping Francona pitches Lester on his normal 4 days rest that day instead of Penny. Given that Lester is pitching right now in the 9th I suspect the coaching staff will opt to give him an extra day's rest, even if I'm hoping for something else.

Well, we've got Beckett and Lester back on track it seems. Now we need Matsuzaka to get it going and we're looking good. Penny's been pitching better, Wake's been a rock as usual, we've got Smoltz coming soon, and Buchholz looking very sharp in the minors (Not to mention Masterson who can always fill in if it comes to it).

I just love our pitching depth. Our lineup is fine, we just need some help at SS (which I imagine you can start the clock on a deal getting done once Smoltz is up and doing his thing) and potentially a bat to replace Papi if it comes to that ().

                Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Green has looked more and more comfortable at short the more he plays (making me wonder if Lugo will ever see the field again in a Red Sox uniform) there so I think the Red Sox can afford to wait until Lowrie is healthy. At that point they can evaluate what kind of production they can expect out of the position and determine if they need to make a trade. With Green's defense looking better, a trade for a defensive-minded shortstop like Jack Wilson looks like a waste. They're getting nothing out of Lugo's roster spot right now so I wonder how long they can continue to do so.

Interleague play returns this weekend (bleck!) so one of the trio of Ortiz, Youk, and Lowell will ride the bench each night. In the past Francona has rested a different guy each game but with the struggles of Ortiz I'm think he will see more of the bench than the rest. Which of course sucks because he's just starting to heat up and you hate to see a guy get cold as a result. If Matsuzaka looks like garbage again this weekend I think the Red Sox may try to DL him again. That way they won't have to trade Penny right away and can at least see what they have in Smoltz.

I don't know how long this is going to last, but both Lester and Beckett are locked in right now and it's fun to watch.

                    ^^^Agreed.

BTW, just saw this on ESPN, and I can't stop laughing.

Really...we get plunked at a tune of 9 or 10 to 3 and Joe's seeking discipline? Gimmie a break. Anything to steer attention away from the 0-8 start against us it seems.

Oh, and as funny as Henry's twitter comments are, he'd be best served to be quiet. IMO, after the way those negotiations went, it comes off as petty...whether he means it that way or not. Not a huge deal, but there should be better things for him to be doing than "tweeting" about "MT"...lol. (though I admit that a part of me loves how he's always playing with the Yankees)

Yeah its pretty ridiculous. I shared my thoughts in a blog post but I mostly have a problem with managers complaining about this stuff in the media. It just makes Girardi look weak. It also should be noted we do not know if the Red Sox have been lobbying the commissioner's office for suspensions against the Yankees and just aren't public about it. If the Red Sox have been then they look just as silly as the Yankees.

Henry's comments are dumb, and better left for fans, though I don't really care about the disagreements of millionaires (or in Henry's case, billionaires).

If anything good came out of Ramirez blowing the save, it was seeing Bard get his first ML save. It wasn't always pretty, but he got the job done. Getting the first one is usually the hardest one to get so I'll chalk up the wildness to nerves.

lol...or spending too much time with Pap.

Maybe he had a bet with the kid to see if he could dance out of fire as well.

I'm rather annoyed that the umpires chose to start tonight's game in the pouring rain only to pull the tarp after 1 inning. Now both starters have had to sit for over an hour after a 13 inning game the night before. The forecast was for passing showers, and the game will likely resume, but I would argue they should have waited to start the game around 9. Now both teams may lose its starting pitcher. I don't know what the Phillies will do, but I would guess the Red Sox would go to Wakefield for 2 or 3 innings and go from there. A roster move would likely follow before tomorrow's game. Masterson and Saito are likely the only guys totally off limits tonight and Penny could conceivably get an inning.

He's got a WHIP over 2 for the season. The Red Sox can't keep sending him out there in his current state.
