    Re: 2013 Seattle Mariners

Real tuff night last night for Maurer. Getting that roughed up by a poor Astro's team.
Hopefully he can put it together against a strong Texas or Detroit lineup in his next start.

Maurer has looked so overmatched so far... If he gets roughed up in his next start too, I hope they swap him and Hultzen.

Hultzen looks MLB ready right now, much more so than Maurer.

I doubt it happens though, cant wait to see him up here. If Maurer gets killed again he's gone. I'd like to see

        1- Felix
        2- Iwak
        3- Saunders
        4- Harang
        5- Erasmo

I think that Harang trade says that they are gonna try and make a run this year, and im excited about it! Now if Ackley, and Seager can start hitting.

Aaron Harang does not equate to making a run at a damn thing. Aaron Harang means Blake Beaven/Brandon Maurer have been so horrendously bad that they needed to trade for a 35 year old pitcher that hasn't thrown to a live batter yet this year in order to just stop the bleeding.

I am getting so sick and tired of the Geoff Baker's of the world telling M's fans to stop panicking and "get a grip."

Listen clown, this team has actually been competitive for ONE season over the past 12 years. It has been a yearly embarrassment for us since 2001. Attendance is a joke. The M's raised ticket prices on season ticket holders last year without telling them. They are fighting the return of an NBA franchise. They can't develop young "hitters."

This year, although early, has been embarrassing and more of the same - ZERO accountability.

We have every reason to be pissed. We have every reason to mail it in. This organization is a joke right now and the thin ice they currently live on is well deserved.

Baker is terrible... Getting so tired of the apologists.

Hmm, I don't know... I think it's pretty par for the course to bring in over the hill veterans who were good five years ago.

But, Harang might be decent... Or at least better than Beavan.

Unfortunately my first post is looking kinda true, which sucks. But it's still really, really early. It's a long season and things can change pretty quickly.

Well looks like Pryor is on the DL, and Casper just got DFA'd by the Jays. Its a lot easier to win games when the young guns start hitting to go along with the vets like Morales and Morse, good win vs the Rangers, should have won 3 but the umpires blew a call, and blew one yesterday too, but thats baseball.

When they start hitting? No, it's IF they ever start hitting and can somewhat resemble an average Major League ballplayer. Right now, Ackley, Smoak and Montero have never achieved that. I am inclined to be more patient with Montero because he was a rookie last year and the numbers weren't too bad, but this kid has a LONG way to go. He can't run, he can't really field, he can't do much of anything except hit supposedly, and the jury is still out on that - though I do believe he has potential.

Smoak has never given me a reason to believe. I was excited when we got him from Texas. I have been excited to see him hit in very brief flashes, but the truth is he has been terrible as a Major League player.

Ackley looks lost... He needs to figure out his swing or mechanics or whatever else he needs to figure out in Tacoma. He, like Smoak, never even came close to mastering that level. He is struggling mightily in the Show. Over matched, not confident, lost. I am losing hope.

Seager is, at best, an average Major League bat. At 3B, he is below average. He is not terrible, but he does not conjure up a whole lot of excitement.

With Ackley and Smoak, it's not like these guys are kids. They are not 21 or 22-year-old prospects. Smoak is 26 and Ackley is 25. Still young, but at this point, I just wish they could show us something that could enable us to have hope.

                            But they haven't.

After three years, I do not think Wedge and Z have brought this team closer to contention. Maybe they have, but I am not seeing it, because I am at the point where the patience is waning and I want to be shown something.

                            Anything.

Montero - .448 OPS, one extra base hit.
Smoak - .496 OPS, one extra base hit.
Ackley - .304 OPS, zero extra base hits.

That is vomit inducing. I don't know many other franchises that would put up with this, but it has been par for the course with this organization and we're "rebuilding," so all is good.

I am just frustrated... This organization has shown zero ability to develop young hitters. Ackley was the consensus #2 pick after Strasburg, so it wasn't a bad pick - but the M's haven't developed him.

All three of them are talented hitters, IMO... I am not going to refuse to place any blame on them, but the brunt of the blame falls on the organization.

We lack baseball people from the top down.

It is going to be a long season, once again.

But I'll be happy as hell if some how, the M's and these young hitters end up surprising me some how.

                                Re: 2013 Seattle Mariners

Smoak has a mere 100 career extra base hits in 1474 plate appearances and sports a career .676 OPS.

                                Some other young first basemen:

Paul Goldschmidt - 89 extra base hits in 818 plate appearances with a .851 OPS.

Freddie Freeman - 115 extra base hits in 1152 plate appearances with a .794 OPS.

Ike Davis - 128 extra base hits in 1379 plate appearances with a .786 OPS.

Even Eric Hosmer and Yonder Alonso have far better extra base hit ratios and OPS numbers than Smoak does and both of those guys are considered disappointments so far. Smoak is essentially an extremely poor man's Adam Lind.
