My point is more that he's so dogmatic about it and dismisses it out of hand. It's the inflexibility couched in "savvy new age thinking" that bothers me more than trying to increase the swing count for each player. There are enough slumping players on the team that I feel there's no harm in devoting some additional practice time. Or at least considering it. The way it is now, some players are taking their BP swings in games it seems like anyway. And the results are predictably poor.

When Maddon's teams historically have taken off in the 2nd half, you figure he might know what he's talking about with curtailing practice time and balancing things out, doing things his way. When the team doesn't click, however, then I think it's fair to re-examine those methods.

How else do you fix your swing if not by watching yourself on video, taking to coaching, tweaking, getting in there and practicing until the movements are the most natural things in the world? Visualization is useful, but you can't just play out swings in your mind and hope for any sort of timing or muscle memory. There's something to be said for the "mental side" of hitting and God knows several players could use a fresh approach, but I find Maddon's POV to be frustrating. Then again, I've never managed a baseball team through a 6 month grind so what do I know.

I'm starting to agree with you. There's a difference between hitting before games because it's what you do, and hitting before games to get timing and work on something. Maybe they're hitting in the cages underneath, but it's a different feel seeing the ball travel out of the cage.

Maddon is looking just as stubborn as the old timers that still preach beating the ball into the ground and pitchers running long distance after throwing.

And Darvish is officially done for the season. To the surprise of no one at this point.

Hard for Daniel Murphy to hit home runs against the Cubs in the playoffs if he's playing for the Cubs.

In all seriousness, he's been hot since the all-star break so hopefully this turns out to be a good move. Probably means KB or Russell are a little more hurt than we expect.

At least they finally know what's wrong with Darvish. That had to suck.

I think Murphy is mainly tied to Russell I don't think it's at all tied to KB like he had a setback or anything.

Agreed. I'd rather it be something than him just being a weirdo or a flake. If he's hurt, then nothing anyone can do about it until he heals up. At least I can respect that. A pretty strange ordeal though.

Now Morrow is getting more tests. I'm officially worried about that one. Sounds like Bryant is getting closer though.

I never trusted him to log a full season from the time he was signed. Last year was an anomaly in that he was somewhat durable. A bonafide, but slightly overpaid closer might be a nice August waiver-trade situation.

Hopefully we've learned our lesson about signing pitchers tainted by the Dodgers.

Yeah injuries were always the question for him because when he's out there he's as good as anyone.

Chatwood to the DL with "hip tightness." That's a 'we need your roster spot'/healthy scratch if ever I saw one.

David Bote joins Kris Bryant and Gabby Hartnett as the only Cubs rookies with multiple walk-off homers. Bryant and Hartnett should be happy to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Bote if you ask me.

I think I heard that Kris Bryant is on a rehab assignment...finally. But, I've heard zilch about Brandon Morrow. Not good. Can you believe he's been out going on 2 months now? He might be on the Yu Darvish plan for the rest of the season.

Expected it with Morrow. Even with them handling him with kid gloves, I never thought he'd make it through the season.

Kris Bryant to be activated Saturday vs Philly. Third-catcher-to-be Bobby Wilson was acquired from the Twins for Chris Gimenez (clear evidence that Gimenez was only to be Darvish's personal caddy). Pitching coach Jim Hickey seems happy to have Wilson back judging by some of his comments. Wilson can't hit at all, but might help the pitching staff stay rolling.

A little worried about the bullpen being exposed with Strop getting an extended look as the closer (he's done ok so far) and still not convinced we have the lefty relievers needed. Otherwise with Bryant coming back and Hamels being successful beyond everyone's wildest expectations, this team is primed to finish the regular season with authority.

Maybe I'm getting spoiled, but I'm just unimpressed with this team despite the record. Adding Hamels was huge, but the team is too schizophrenic to make a deep run, in my mind.
