Tyler Chatwood gave up five runs on five walks and two hits over 2 1/3 innings in a rehab start on Sunday for Triple-A Iowa against Round Rock. Chatwood, who has been sidelined with left hip tightness, struck out one.

I'm still a bit shocked by his season. He was never Kershaw in terms of control, but I don't know what happened to him to put up these walk numbers. I can only imagine how frustrated he is with himself.

Anyone else feel like Addison Russell has lost a good bit of his confidence? He seems fragile to me for some reason.

I was watching him congratulate teammates and he seemed very subdued. Seems like a combo of lost confidence and maybe some apathy from losing his starting spot.

Bullpen is pretty scary right now, imo. Would be unfortunate for the one thing that had been more or less a constant to go to crap when the team needs it most. Workload is getting to Cishek. Morrow out until 2022 apparently. Rosario, Chatwood, Garcia, Duensing, and Norwood should never enter a game with a margin closer than 7 runs. Wilson and Kintzler shouldn't come in with less than a 4-run lead. CJ, Chavez, and Strop are the only guys I want to see in close games.

Unfortunately there's no Aroldis Chapman to burn in the playoffs this year. Gonna need the starters to figure everything out and give 6+ innings every game.

Remember when some fans were penciling in the returns of Darvish and Smyly as answers to questions on the pitching staff?

The Cubs announced Monday that reliever Drew Smyly has been shut down for the season after his recovery from Tommy John surgery hit some snags.

Willson Contreras has been a straight up ghost since the All-Star break. Batting .210 with 2 homers. No wonder we're seeing so much Caratini. Really unfortunate how so many young Cubs hitters have plateaued or got worse this year.

I can't figure out how they lead the NL in runs. I keep thinking that there's no way they'll make a deep run in the playoffs, but every other NL contender has major flaws too. Hell the best two rosters might not even make the playoffs in Washington and LA

Not the first time this has happened; Willy is one of the biggest offenders of this kind of thing on the team, but hopefully he learns from it. Maybe Joe needs to get a little bit more disciplinarian with some of these youngsters.

Joe Maddon took issue with Willson Contreras standing at home admiring a blast that ended up hitting the wall.

When he's batting .290 it's one thing, but when he's hitting .210 since the break it seems even sillier.

I knew picking up Morrow and expecting him to be THE closer all year was risky bordering on plain dumb, but at least it's now official--Brandon Morrow is done for the season. The Cubs got 3 months out of him anyway. Meh.

PHOENIX -- Brandon Morrow was optimistic after throwing one inning of a simulated game on Saturday in Chicago. But when he tried to reach for a cup of coffee on Monday and couldn't pick it up because of discomfort in his right forearm, the Cubs reliever knew his season was

Yet another completely predictable outcome for the season. I guess it's a good thing to be disappointed in a probable-division-winning season, but this season has felt so underwhelming aside from the ascendance of one David Bote

Funny thing is Bote's stats are actually pretty crappy despite his mythical status among the fan base. He sure has a knack for timing.

Also, someone needs to tell Theo no more Dodgers' sloppy seconds with pitchers. We got boned on both Darvish and Morrow, which is like 75% of the offseason haul. Then there was Smyly and re-signing Duensing. Thankfully, Chatwood is still healthy as a mule. If it weren't for Cishek, this past offseason would be 100% FAIL.

He could hit .100 for the rest of his career and he will remain my favorite Cub ever.

The acquisitions this year were rough. Misses on Darvish, Chatwood, Kintzler, and Morrow (health not performance). At least they hit big on Hamels and Murphy. And I guess Jesse Chavez.

If the Cubs don't score at least 10 runs tonight with multiple players hitting for the cycle, I just might throw something.
