Who's at fault for Matt Doherty's firing? Uh, Matt Doherty.

Look at his record the last two years. That's unacceptable on Tobacco Road. Look at his unstable nature, with outbursts, etc. That's not the Dean-like, or even Guthridge-like, stability that UNC is used to.

Let me give you an example of Doherty's irrational behavior at times. When he coached Notre Dame, the Irish were playing in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse. When a timeout was called, Doherty started screaming trash talk at a Syracuse player as he walked toward the SU bench.

A head coach was screaming unprompted trash at a 19-year-old kid -- yeah, that's class. It's one thing to scream at another team's coach. But screaming at a player who did nothing dirty or cheap against your team?

Jim Boeheim refused to shake Doherty's hand after the game, the only time that I can remember him doing that. And I've lived in Syracuse nearly my entire life. I've hated Doherty since then, too, and shed no tears when he was fired yesterday.

Somewhere, Bill Guthridge should be laughing. UNC would have been MUCH better off if it kept him as coach. But he was the one burned at the stake, not Doherty. That [censored] suffered a self-inflicted wound.

        Take care,

Everywhere I look, Gut gets a free pass. No one seems to want to admit that he was mostly responsible for the 8-20 year, with his lack of recruiting. Jay Bilas said as much on ESPN Radio this morning. He probably got out of Dodge while it was still good. Doh had to recruit a whole new squad, then rely on Kris Lang and Jason Capel, who are complementary role players at best. From what I've read, there was a lot of pressure coming from alumni and people who were increasingly unhappy with the way the program was being run.
That being said, I think all signs point to Roy Williams coming in as HC.

Wouldn't surprise me if players still transferred, some players ACTUALLY liked Doherty.

well, I would bet that some of the players that said they liked him weren't totally honest. And several players transfered last year because of him. And several more were probably going to transfer this year if Coach D. cam back.

Let's hope Roy Williams comes !!!

I actually think it IS Roy, barring a last minute case of cold feet like last time. Everything is in place, talented young core of players, he's feuding with the Kansas AD, and he didn't come out and say "Look, I told you 3 years ago, I'm not coaching Carolina.". Plus I've heard reports that lead me to think this is pretty much a done deal. Anyone besides me think Dean Smith is quietly behind the scenes orchestrating this? Putting in a call to his former assistant to come and rescue the program?

Roy and Coach K, sounds like a fued just like Cheaney and Calipari in the A-10.
