I honestly had no reason to hate Duke until some friends of mine started being really arrogant about Duke being so good, then I just tried to think of every reason to hate Duke even if in reality I don't really care that much. To be honest I just hate them a lot this year because I hate to see an underdog like Butler lose

-One name. Dick Vitale. He never picks against Duke. He acts like he has some kind of tie to Duke. He was garbage as a pro coach. But he grew up in NJ and I guess started claiming them in the 90s like everybody else. He goes into spaz rants about Duke everytime he's on TV. I loved how when he was on ESPN's tourney coverage they would just let him rant on, and then go on with their conversation. Nothing he says makes sense.

-Oh and their conference had what 3 good teams this year (1 that they couldn't even beat). Yet all we hear about is how they deserve a #1 and they're amazing. They were put in the garbage bracket too. I know the Midwest didn't end up being as great as it looked, but there were 6 legit teams + Northern Iowa there. Who did Duke have? I'll give you Baylor, but 'Nova had the Big East overrated label, Purdue was a shell of a team, and New Mexico was overrated.

-Their players have a doucheness to them that is hard to compete with. They always have an overrated big man with hands like ***-cheeks who the media slurps like they are amazing. UNC is like this too with Hansborough & Zeller. Hey, maybe they're great people off the court, but on the court, they all make me wish somebody would take 1 hard foul on them. Scheyer, Singler, Smith (he's getting to their level), Zooobek (and that stupid douchey looking hand sign the fans do), the Plumbery twins, McRoberts, Paulus (oh he was way up there), Redick, and hard foul receding hair line Henderson. Seth Curry seems to be in this mold, but I'll hold judgment on him.

-Coach K. The whining about the devil picture was the topping on his hate cake. Compared to the things your fans do to opposing players, that was nothing. He looks like a little weasel. He'll never take a pro job because no NBA player would listen to him. His players suck in the NBA because you can't flop & get away with all the hand checks when you're the 3rd guy off the bench.

-Since they're a private school, their alumni isn't as huge as say an OSU or Florida. Plus their alumni never stays around school, they go back to NJ and douche up that state. Then you have all the people who either 1) didn't go to college 2) went to a college who had a crappy basketball team or 3) just are bandwagon fans in general. It was hilarious when Duke was 0-11 or 1-10 in CFB. You could ask those Duke bball fans about the football team and get no answer.

You make some good points. A lot of good points actually. I will say this:

Dick Vitale, aka Duke Vitale or Dukie V, has a lot of love for UNC too. He loves talking about the Tar Heels. The difference is that 2 teams that aren't in the ACC can be playing on ESPN/ESPN2 and Duke will not have a game on one of those channels that week, but Duke Vital will still find a way to talk about Duke. That doesn't bother me at all--I'm just saying it does happen. Like I said, he loves UNC and talks about them, but it seems like he does it when the Heels are either playing or is brought up by his partner. The guy brings Duke up out of nowhere and shows he is a fan of Duke. Now Jay Bilas (Duke grad)--that guys is cool and knows what he's talking about. He could teach Dukie V a couple of things about how to stay impartial. It's okay if you're a studio analyst, but if you're calling the game you shouldn't be like Duke Vitale. But like I said, this one doesn't really bother me. He likes Duke--so what?

And Duke deserves all the good credit for winning it all; but I gotta kinda agree with you on one of your points. You can only beat who they put in front of you--Duke did that, and they really do deserve props for that. But many Duke fans won't admit that they did have the easiest road to the title--the number 1 overall seed is supposed to have that and they were the 3rd #1 seed IIRC. But you're right about the conference. The ACC was a joke this year; not because UNC was bad, but because it had ONE team in it--Duke. Second place Maryland wasn't that good this year; they beat Duke, but so did NC STATE for crying outloud. Again, this is NOT Duke's fault--they beat everyone in front of them for the title. But ya gotta admit the teams that were in front of them were a little questionable.

And don't tell me to look at who Butler beat. This is what makes some Duke fans upset at me: I'm an OPEN-MINDED UNC fan. I know Michigan State beat UCONN last year, and we blew Michigan State out like some birthday candles...but--here comes the non-Duke open-mindedness about me--UCONN would have given UNC a much tougher time and may have even been favored to win that game.

Second place Maryland wasn't that good this year; they beat Duke, but so did NC STATE for crying outloud.

I'll say again, this is what Dick Vitale is paid to do. For some reason nobody ever brings up that he never says a bad word about anybody. He's just a nice guy who is also kind of a dope.

What makes Singler, Smith, and the Plumlees douchey on the court? The Plumlees haven't really played enough for someone to form an opinion on them. I think even a Duke ***** would say that Nolan Smith isn't a douche in the least bit. I don't see the douche in Singler either.

Why do you say no NBA player would listen to Coach K? The guy won a freekin gold medal. I'm assuming you watch the NBA. Have you ever seen a lot of hand check fouls called? It's like holding calls in football.

The ACC was down this year. And by 1 team we couldn't even beat, you probably mean Maryland. We split the season series with them so that makes no sense. Is much as it kills me to say it, Maryland was good. As always, they were not as good as they should have been.

Ok true. He also praises those coaches and players throughout the game. He brings up Duke but they aren't the only team he brings up. Not for analyzing the game.

Maryland finished tied for first.

Tie breaker went to Duke IIRC; that said, Maryland was technically second if they tied and got the #2 seed in the conference tourney. I see what you mean though.

Why do I hate Duke basketball?


1. The Cameron Crazies. They're the reason you have the stupid game long yelling. I get so tired of it. And what's more, I get tired of other teams trying it and failing. Not to mention, why in the hell would anyone waste their college days camping out for a basketball game? That's one thing I would have never done while I was at Alabama, not even for football.

2. Coach K whines way too much. I know he's one of the greatest coaches and teachers ever in the game but the whining is too much. You always get the calls, you don't need to bitch and moan while getting them.

3. Your fanbase that ONLY follows Duke basketball. I want to punch every single person who simply roots for Duke basketball. I noticed a poster on here seriously pulls for Florida State football and Duke basketball. Why don't you just go ahead and admit you're not a real fan of sports? It's such a pathetic thing to do. As I sat in Buffalo Wild Wings on the Tennesse campus I saw probably 20 Duke "fans". None of which could even get into Duke I'm sure.

4. The fact that all of their games have to be televised nationally. Alabama gets a lot of preferential treatment in football as far as that, but we always have a game or 2 that's only available in SEC markets. Duke never has this. I'd be a little put off if ESPN wanted show Alabama v. Georgia State this coming season.

5. I don't like the people they recruit. Social awkwardness is a pet peeve of mine. You're in college, time to get a normal hair cut, get some color to your skin, and make bad decisions. Most Duke players look like they never go anywhere but a basketball court and their dorm. Which is pathetic to me. Totally throwing away a college experience.

6. Did I mention 99.5% of their fanbase have never even opened a Duke course catalog?

7. They didn't win a national title until 1991. And yet they act as if they've been college basketball royalty since Wooden got his first driver's license.






Most of my hatred for Duke basketball stems from the "fans". The rest only adds fuel to the already massive bonfire.

2. We do get a lot of call in our favor, no argument from me there.

3. Dukes football team is terrible and has always been i cant really think of a reason to root for them unless you went to Duke.

4. People keep watching so what do you expect.

5. Thats because Duke is a strict and expensive school unless you are on a scholarship, so people that go there can't really afford to mess up.

6. You don't have to go to a school just to like their basketball team. Plus like i said before its an expensive school everyone can't afford to go there.

And to the people saying we don't play on the road, this year we went to Wisconsin, played UCONN at madison square garden(home of the big east tournament), and went to Georgetown.

If you ever visit our message board, one of the hot summer topics is always "Who are we playing on the road this year?"

As far as college football goes i can't really say i'm a fan of any team anymore, i guess i'm just a fan of the sport now. Most people pick their favorite teams before they know anything about sports so you cant really blame them for that. I only have a problem with people who switch their favorite teams to whoever is the favorite to win for the year.
