NCAA Games To Have Staggered Starts

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6107744

NEW YORK -- The NCAA tournament's new TV deal will allow for more staggered starts of games, so all of those buzzer-beaters aren't happening at the same time.

The contract signed in April with CBS and Turner Sports meant all games would be televised live nationally for the first time. Because Turner's three cable channels don't have the same commitments to the nightly news and other regular programming as CBS, the tournament games will be more spread out, starting this season.

That includes prime-time games on TBS, TNT and truTV during the first Sunday of the tournament, the networks announced Thursday.

Last season, when only CBS broadcast games, the first three contests on the opening Thursday afternoon started within 10 minutes of each other. Even for fans who had access to all of the games through the free stream on the Internet or by buying the TV package, that often meant multiple matchups going down to the wire at the same time.

"That wasn't good enough," Turner Sports senior vice president Christina Miller said. "What was going to be good enough was if we stagger it and let people catch each game or at least capture the big moments at the end of everything."

Now those games will start at least 30 minutes apart.

The new way of watching March Madness was made possible when CBS and Turner signed a 14-year, $10.8 billion deal, with the NCAA deciding to expand from 65 only to 68 teams, not 96. The contract kept the regional finals and Final Four on CBS through 2015. The regional semifinals will be split between CBS and TBS this season.

I saw this earlier today and love it. Can't wait for the tourney to start this year with all the games we're going to get.

      I'm not a fan.

Part of the charm was getting to go between games that were down to the wire.

I have a feeling that my excitement for March Madness is slowly dwindling and it's not because I'm simply getting older. I feel they are ruining the sport that I dearly love with all these changes.

Adding more teams was definitely dumb, but I don't see how staggering the starts can be a bad thing. This just means you will get to see more games, and we won't have 3 games at halftime at the same time. Sounds like a win to me.

Yeah, the staggered start times mean you can watch the end of every game theoretically. You don't have to try and flip back and forth when 2 games are in the final minute. Plus EVERY game will be on cable TV. This is the best thing the NCAA tourney has done in a long time. I can't say I love the extra 4 teams, but that is much better then expanding it even further. I cannot wait.

I always take vacation days on the first Thursday and Friday of the tourney, and this new TV schedule just makes that even more rewarding.

The pros of the changes to the new TV schedule outweigh any cons. Anybody with cable can watch any game they want now and not have to rely on their internet connection. Instead of being forced to watch Kansas-Lehigh, you can watch whatever game you want and not suffer any lag.

This is a great thing. When I lived in Charlotte, you had to watch the ACC teams play their games in their ENTIRETY which meant you had to watch all 40 minutes of Duke v. Alcorn State while better games were on.

I get what Eli is saying... I remember in '06 it was my freshman year at Mizzou and we had like 14 guys in our tiny dorm room all watching the games, and screaming at the top of our lungs, "SWITCH IT OVER!!! SWITCH IT OVER!!!" because there were 2-3 games going down to the wire at the same time. It was awesome, lol.

But being able to see all of the endings of games without interruption is better.

you can still switch it over by using your TV or cable remote.

Unfortunately no, but there were rumors that it might be in time for the NCAA tourney. We shall see.

I guess this saves me the $40 or $50 Mega March Madness used to run me.

I still am a little concerned with these other networks covering the tournament. In my opinion, it should be on CBS or a mix of ESPN and CBS. I don't want truTV covering an actual sport that people pay attention to.
