It'd be a lot clearer if they just called lane violations by the book. Now players don't know what's okay and what isn't, but they also don't want to give up a rebounding edge. That's poor reffing as a whole, IMO.

I'm 23-9 right now. Not too bad.

13/16 Sweet Sixteen teams remaining, 7/8 Elite Eight teams remaining, and 3/4 Final Four teams remaining. Not bad at all.
I thought the head of officiating said that the guys inside the arc can move once the shot is released, or are you saying that they jumped in before it was even released? Now I'm confused too lol.

And I wonder if UNCA and ND were doing this all game or if they just did it on those final shots because they knew they needed to get the rebound desperately.

Now I'm questioning myself. I was under the impression that being in the lane before the ball hits rim is a lane violation.

I don't understand why and the hell Charles Barkley said the refs should have "let them play." The rule is a player outside the arc can't move towards the basket until the ball hits the rim. Right? The kid from ND violated it. Had a Xavier player done it, I'd have called him a bonehead. Then Chuck says no intentional foul on Connaughton blatantly having a hold of Dez Wells' jersey trying to prevent him from getting the inbounds pass. I guess the refs were just supposed to swallow their whistles and let ND win the wrong way? I don't get it.

EDIT: Per hoopsvibe.com - "Players not occupying a marked lane space may not enter the lane or other lane boundaries until the ball touches the ring or backboard or until the free throw ends."

I watched that too and wanted to punch him in his fat face! He made no sense whatsoever.

Barkleys rant was that the refs should basically ignore certain rules to guarantee an exciting finish. It was the dumbest thing I heard in quite awhile.

                RULE 9
                Violations and
                Penalties
                Section 1. Free Throw
Art. 1. The try shall be attempted from within the free-throw semicircle and
                behind the free-throw line.
Art. 2. After the ball is placed at the disposal of a free-thrower:
                a. The free-thrower shall release the try within 10 seconds and in such a
way that the ball enters the basket or touches the ring or flange before
                the free throw ends.
                b. The free-thrower shall not purposely fake a try nor shall the freethrower’s
teammates nor opponents purposely fake a violation.
                c. The free-thrower shall not break the vertical plane of the free-throw
line with either foot until the ball strikes the ring, flange or backboard
or until the free throw ends.
                d. The free-thrower shall not enter the semicircle. The free-thrower
shall not leave the semicircle before the try contacts the ring,
backboard or when the free throw ends.
                e. No player shall enter or leave a marked lane space.
                f. No opponent shall disconcert (e.g., taunt, bait, gesture or delay) the
                free-thrower.
                g. Players not in a legal marked lane space shall remain behind the freethrow
line extended and behind the three-point field-goal line until
the ball strikes the ring, flange or backboard, or until the free throw
                ends.
                h. Players occupying any of the legal marked lane spaces on each side
of the lane may break the vertical plane of a lane-space boundary
once the free-thrower has released the ball. (See Rule 8-1.)
Assuming the vertical plane mentioned is the entire lane, you are right on the inner players. Still, though, I've seen many lane violations by shooters and guards outside of the arc which weren't called. Notably, in the 2010 tournament's Kentucky vs. Miss St.

I wonder, is high school basketball different? That may be where I'm getting my rule from.

I don't think so. My brother-in-law and I were talking Thursday night about the Syracuse-UNCA game and he mentioned he was actually called for this lane violation when he played in high school. He said, "I remember telling my teammate standing outside the 3-point line with me that we should just run in there after he lets go of the ball and get an easy tip in or dunk." They apparently tried it and got called for a lane violation. They also got a nice spot on the bench next to their coach for a little while.

I think the thing that really killed Notre Dame was that god awful full court pass that sailed out of bounds.
