    Conference Reallignment: the Basketball edition

The A-10 is considering bringing in 7 schools from the Big East (Marquette, DePaul, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova) to bring their ranks to 21 teams.

The Atlantic 10 has discussed the possibility of a 21-team basketball league in the event that the changing conference landscape makes high-profile Big East schools available, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com Tuesday.

    Discuss.

    My initial reaction:
There is no reason to have a 21 team conference, but perhaps there would be merit to it, though I don't see any.
    MLB: Minnesota Twins
    NFL: Philadelphia Eagles
    NBA: Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves
European Football: Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion
    NCAA: UNI Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes

I think we will see 4 super conferences in the end that end up breaking away from the NCAA.

If I wasn't a huge Temple fan I would be in favor of the 21 team conference. Basketball only schools need to figure out how to have power/voice and the best joining together is one way to do it.

I'd rather see them recruit 3-5 other schools and form a new conference.

Pretty sad how arguably the best basketball conference will be wiped away to nothing shortly.

But yeah...21 schools aren't going to split up TV contract money. Not happening.

Right, and that's what I think the ridiculous part of this is. Even if they have a huge TV deal, the individual schools aren't going to see nearly as much of it as they would if they left the conference as is. If I were a current member of the A10 I'd be raising my voice against this move.

The A-10 makes about $400,000 per school. The new Big East deal for Basketball Only schools would be around $1.1-1.4 million. Not gonna happen. The A-10 wont get a TV deal as good as that.

Gonzaga to the Big East for basketball only?

                  1. While the Big East's seven non-FBS basketball schools are deciding what course of action to take next, there is one school that would love to be a part of any new conference or conglomerate: Gonzaga.

Damn, add them and the BE could raid the A10! I do hope the Big East basketball schools break off from the football school, they will get a better deal than splitting it with the other 25(I don't know) football schools. The Catholic schools can do better, no offense to UCONN but that basketball team does not make up for the other garbage basketball teams. The bad programs they brought in simply do not make up for the good ones.

Selfish reason: that will free up MSG for the ACC

Wow... this turns things on its head. If this happens the BE could easily stick around...

Also, so much for keeping things geographical for a change.

The seven Catholic schools will not join the A-10, if anything they'll poach and form a new conference. The A-10 has some fun basketball but the bottom of the conference is dreadful.

If you add in the 7 Big East basketball schools plus the A10, these schools will more than make up the difference if that is the path they want. CBS, NBC and ESPN would probably partner together and be able to give them a nice deal.

The more likely scenario is the Big East breaks up into basketball only schools and football playing members. The basketball only schools pick off Xavier, SLU, Gonzaga (B-ball only), Saint Mary's (B-Ball only) and Butler and make a 12 team basketball monster ( Call it the Holy Roller Catholic League if you like). That money will dwarf anything these Big East schools will make by staying with the football schools at this point.

If that happended, UCONN basketball would be the only basketball power left and would dominate what ever is left of the Big East.
