Is there something I have to do to complete put back dunks?

I saw this same thing in CG...

The ball will bounce off the rim...my offense player will come flying in, in prime position for a nasty putback...and he just comes down with the rebound instead of putting it back...it's almost like the animation starts but just ends up a rebound...

Do I have to press the shot button to complete these? I would assume it's not a tendencies thing being that I just had Josh Smith do it a couple of times...

    anyone else experience this?

Yepper, it is like this on current gen for me. I've seen it many many times, but I'm not sure. It's as if it's treated as a regular rebound and the CPU is looking for you to complete the tip dunk yourself. Any answers on this would be much appreciated.

It used to be the shoot button in order to do putback dunks.

Glad I'm not crazy...going to try and complete the play next time I see it...If that's the case, I actually like the idea of that mechanic...would give me a sense of achievement.... Hopefully this can be confirmed...
