Weren't you the one who asked for boundaries?
No! CG didn't even have that option.
Van, let's just say from a conversation I had I don't get the sense that they took defensive settings out to fix something. It may have been taken out because it conflicted with POEs, however.
Guys, what we need to do is the following:
1. Come up with detailed thoughts on how POEs can layer or co-exist with classic defensive schemes.
2. Come up with ideas on how to tweak POEs so we can at least patch some holes in our defensive options if Defensive Settings don't come back this year.
For starters, an easy no-nonsense way to re-incorporate Defensive Settings and not have them conflict with POEs:
1. Bring back Defensive Settings -- call it Defensive Gameplan.
2. Add Defensive Gameplan to the list of options in Timeout, which allows you to set classic Defensive Settings.
3. Rename the OFF option in Defensive POE to "STICK TO GAMEPLAN"
4. Rename Matchups option in Pause Menu to Defensive Gameplan, and allow us to page through using L2 and R2 to set Doubles, Pick and Roll, etc. This also mirrors how the settings work (or used to work) in the pre-game lineup settings. They won't even have to change the icon. It's already a shield to denote defense.
5. Bring Back full modification of Coach Profiles to the Options screen. Or better yet, move it to the Defensive Gameplan (formerly Matchups) option. It might make more sense to rename Matchups to just "Gameplan" or "Coaching" then if everything will be dumped in there.
This brings back everything we had, used, and loved while allowing it to coexist next to POE without interference.
This also adds an additional, casual friendly, immersion factor by allowing us to "Stick to the gameplan!" during timeouts. It's the very tone POEs are meant to strike-- sounding like a soundbite from a wired broadcast that means something more.
They might not have audio for this yet, but they could even have Doris Burke announce the following--
"I just overheard in the huddle that coach Mark Jackson wants the team to stick to their gameplan. Shots might fall in the face of great defense, but coach is confident that if they trust their scouting reports and each other, things will eventually go their way. Back to you, Kevin."
A casual might be curious as to what the "Gameplan" actually is, and opt to look at the Gameplan settings. Then he might either realize that there's a lot he wants to learn about the game-- or that he's happy with everything set to auto-- or he might just pick one of the POEs he actually understands. We've either made a new hardcore player, or a casual goes on his merry old way, no harm, no foul. Win, win.
He will also understand that since "STICK TO GAMEPLAN" is one of the POE options, the other options are obviously to DIVERGE from the Gameplan. It becomes self explanatory that POEs other than STICK TO GAMEPLAN do something else than the Gameplan and overrides any Defensive Settings or Coach Profile settings that might be set.
Let's hear more, guys.
