Re: My tips for playing On-Ball defense (on or offline)
You have to anticipate the shot very early if you're going to be able to influence the shot with hands up. But if you're arriving late or switching to the defender to contest the shot, your controlled player will get his hands up about when the ball is hitting the rim, if you're lucky.
CPU defenders have a tremendous advantage in being able to contest shots more quickly, they're just not as successful in influencing the shot as the user is when the user can get in position.Comment

My only problem with right stick hands up is it delays on input too much. I feel like this may even be more true this year than last year.

Re: My tips for playing On-Ball defense (on or offline)
I also play softer on guys I want to get the ball and take the shot, using the individual defensive settings.
I'm not as good at user double teams, though I usually set hard hedge on shooters/scoring threats from the perimeter, go under screens and in some cases for standout scorers I'll double in either perimeter/post for catch or dribble. Not for a whole game, though.
So I do use the defensive settings and adjust them based on what I see happening on the court.
Still, the hands up defensive right stick mechanic is slow and, in my opinion, less effective in influencing the shot than it was last year.Comment

I do set play tight for the shooters. I notice though that POE softens it if you try to set individual mathups to tight or even (at the extreme) smother while playing overall neutral or even trying to protect paint. That's ok though, there have to be tradeoffs.

I still need to figure out what GAP and the HEDGE does. I have a vague idea of how they work so I do really use them. That's hurting meComment

Re: My tips for playing On-Ball defense (on or offline)
is quicker then you are has ankle breaker gap space between you and the ball handler.
Hard hedge is to stop the penetrator when the call for picks.
It could set from soft hedge means not so deep.
To harder hedge really deep.
I think there's video tutorials
around here are youtube.Comment

That's exactly how you guard that anticipation with your hands up for controlled movements!! If he did it once expect it again. It doesn't work on me as much . Now I'm trying to learn how to guard those guys that back up to the half court line and turbo to the paint for and animation (in park btw)Female Russell Westbrook.

Re: My tips for playing On-Ball defense (on or offline)
Sad thing is, it's not guaranteed to stop all of it. It's not a magic fix, and you will guess wrong eventually. Last night I had a guy go left, right, left, right, right. He completely lost me but bricked the 2. Defense is always going to be anticipation first, skills second. They can give you all the tools in the world, but it means nothing if you can't figure out your opponents tendancies and counter them
Not even in real do guys get completely shut down.
There's nothing sad about that at all. That's realisticComment

I'm not upset by it, because yeah, you aren't shutting someone completely down in real life. Honestly it makes me laugh that this has been a tactic for at least 3 incarnations of this series, and most people on the park still can't even follow the running guy well.Female Russell Westbrook.
