You couldn't say it much better.
Even if you miss layups jumpshot on all-star you're defense could keep you in the game.

My only problem with right stick hands up is it delays on input too much. I feel like this may even be more true this year than last year.

You have to anticipate the shot very early if you're going to be able to influence the shot with hands up. But if you're arriving late or switching to the defender to contest the shot, your controlled player will get his hands up about when the ball is hitting the rim, if you're lucky.

CPU defenders have a tremendous advantage in being able to contest shots more quickly, they're just not as successful in influencing the shot as the user is when the user can get in position.

Depends if you're controlling a good defender or not. I noticed that players with good defensive attributes can put their hands up more quickly.

You're on ball set to play tight.
Remember set who to play tight
          gap switch double team.

Its the key for good denfence.

I do set play tight for the shooters. I notice though that POE softens it if you try to set individual mathups to tight or even (at the extreme) smother while playing overall neutral or even trying to protect paint. That's ok though, there have to be tradeoffs.

I also play softer on guys I want to get the ball and take the shot, using the individual defensive settings.

I'm not as good at user double teams, though I usually set hard hedge on shooters/scoring threats from the perimeter, go under screens and in some cases for standout scorers I'll double in either perimeter/post for catch or dribble. Not for a whole game, though.

So I do use the defensive settings and adjust them based on what I see happening on the court.

Still, the hands up defensive right stick mechanic is slow and, in my opinion, less effective in influencing the shot than it was last year.

I think your right it work when it wants to.

What I think the controls comes
on when the team is playing good.
              There's time where things work
              smoothly and quick response.

I still need to figure out what GAP and the HEDGE does. I have a vague idea of how they work so I do really use them. That's hurting me

If the person you are playing d
is quicker then you are has ankle breaker gap space between you and the ball handler.

Hard hedge is to stop the penetrator when the call for picks.
It could set from soft hedge means not so deep.
                  To harder hedge really deep.

                  I think there's video tutorials
                  around here are youtube.

Sad thing is, it's not guaranteed to stop all of it. It's not a magic fix, and you will guess wrong eventually. Last night I had a guy go left, right, left, right, right. He completely lost me but bricked the 2. Defense is always going to be anticipation first, skills second. They can give you all the tools in the world, but it means nothing if you can't figure out your opponents tendancies and counter them

Well of course its not a magic fix. It's not suppose to be and there is no such thing.

Not even in real do guys get completely shut down.

My experience is that when you make a guy a work for it like that, he will typically miss.

I know. I just feel like there should be a little bit more of a penalty for that type of play. It feels like they drop your chances by like 15%, but then give you a bonus for being wide open that negates it.

I'm not upset by it, because yeah, you aren't shutting someone completely down in real life. Honestly it makes me laugh that this has been a tactic for at least 3 incarnations of this series, and most people on the park still can't even follow the running guy well.
