It matters in franchise mode with player contracts (how much the CPU will pay), it matters with the CPU building lineups (that's why you constantly see Manu Ginobili /Jamal Crawford starting over Danny Green/J.J. Redick) and other aspects I'm not thinking of cause its 3AM and I'm still up.

It matters because Kobe has obviously been given a boost somewhere (perimeter defense, defensive IQ, athleticisim or shooting) to keep him in that mid 80's range. No way is a past his prime Bryant (or Ginobili) better than an elite 3-and-D (in his prime) specialist like Danny Green, but in 2K they both are.

    Very good points.

I think maybe the solution might be to ditch the concept of an "OVR" rating all-together.

For example, we know in the real world that stats like points per game tend be overvalued in free agent deals--perhaps less so now but still the case. Defense tends to be undervalued and underpaid, largely because it's harder to measure at this point in time. But you still have to construct a roster properly--if you only invest in defense, you may end up lacking shooting and totally crush the spacing of your offense. There are tons of non-linear effects here.

What I'd like to see is a handful of gestalt ratings that cover basic skills: playmaking, scoring, rebounding, and defense at a minimum: perhaps more nuanced would be outside scoring, inside scoring, playmaking, perimeter D, and interior D. Some of these skills may be more scarce at a given time than other skills, and certainly more scarce when combined and depending on player size. For an obvious example, Lebron's ability to defend multiple positions AND serve as a primary playmaker AND score everywhere is what makes him so indescribably valuable. Draymond Green's value comes from his combination of freakish defensive ability across multiple positions, solid playmaking, and league-average 3-point shooting. It isn't that he's an amazing shooter, it's that he's just good enough of a shooter that he won't kill your spacing as a big man and that he can take and make wide-open threes at a respectable clip. If he shot the ball like MKG, he wouldn't be nearly as valuable, though he'd still be worth something.

I'd love to see the AI have the ability to value the combination of these different ratings together, and have the AI behavior toward these players be driven by 1) relative scarcity and 2) team fit. For example, a team might favor a lower usage 3 and D wing player as a starter over a better playmaker (with a higher OVR on the old scale), recognizing that they already have a capable, high-usage playmaker on the floor who will dominate the ball, and what they need is someone to provide spacing and play defense. They would then bring that other playmaker off the bench to spark the reserve unit for when their star needs a breather. A team with limited shooting ability from its big men might be tempted to overpay for a stretch 4 in free-agency, particularly if there are limited stretch 4's available. And in my dream world, there would be levels of GM competency, such that some teams might have GMs who still insist on overpaying for something like points per game and fail to notice the value of a 3 and D wing at a discount.

Just some thoughts. It seems like the actual game engine is getting incredible work to become more life-like--it will be interesting to see how they are able to develop the AI in MyLeague and MyGM. I think they are taking some steps, e.g. with teams being able to be in rebuild or "win-now" mode. I'd like to see GMs with different value ratings for certain things, e.g. valuing defense vs. shooting vs. playmaking vs. all-around versatility. A rebuild could work differently depending on 1) the GM and 2) the team/market. One variation would be the Hinkie model of hoarding picks, tanking, keeping cap space clear (e.g. they will fill open roster spots for the league minimum, rather than overpaying for random veterans), and trying to pounce when the timing is right with a big FA signing or a blockbuster trade package, all the while hoping they draft a superstar with their slew of picks. Another would be how a big-market team like the Knicks or Lakers might try to rebuild, which would involve a bit of tanking, clearing a lot of cap space, and then going all-in for a free-agent splash. When it comes to drafting, some teams would be more likely to go for "best available" and others for "best fit," and this might be in part determined by whether they are rebuilding or not. Some teams may always go for "best available," it would just depend.

I don't think it would take much, though I could be wrong, to make the AI in myGM or myLeague seem incredibly nuanced--this would give the league itself a ton of life and realism.

Absolutely. There are many skills on the court that Kobe possesses which Green lacks.

But Green was VERY clearly, by any reasonable measure, a more valuable player to his team last year because he fit his role perfectly.

The question becomes what the AI uses to assess value of an elite specialist vs. a good all-around player who still wants to play like a superstar. In real life, we all see that it's almost impossible to imagine the Spurs preferring to have Kobe over Green--it'd be great if the AI could mimic that as well.

I know that Scott and Da Czar never elaborated on these topics, but has rebounding or paint contact been mentioned at all by the developers? I thought the rebounding logic needed an overhaul badly after the last few seasons. I know we finally have long rebounds but what have they done to make truly elite rebounders (prime Dwight Howard, Moss Malone, Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, etc. ) feel special. Do players go after the ball instead of just boxing out in one spot and being stuck in the animation?

Paint contact improved a ton last season, but at times it felt too "canned" (especially with those ridiculous non-called "hard foul" animations) and lacked contact dunk/block animations. Will we see these animations and more refined or improved animations in the painted are?

Another question I have is how was Beds able to implement "true" wingspan for players that don't have that data available? For example, I know that Kevin Garnett's wingspan isn't known publicly so how do you compensate for that fact.

I think Czar mentioned that it's one of those work in progress. I could be wrong since there was a lot of info and Czar has that radio voice that puts me to sleep (no offense) when I try to absorb the info.

Da Czar mentioned how at one point, OG put a defensive scheme in the game and he couldn't score AT ALL.... so he had to go back and put in a new offense to combat it

Same for OG, Da Czar had an offense in the game, and OG and his engineer stayed in the office from 830am til 9am the next day trying to stop it...

This is definitely some exciting news and something im not sure 2k has ever had before...not like, the devs battling trying to out execute eachother on opposite sides

So basically those My League games are gonna be some work, and they'll matter a whole lot more
The dueling between O and D is awesome. Just hope they didn't make it so hard on us average users that we can't figure out how to counter their tactics. Maybe an option to turn on coach advice would be cool if it ever got to this point (IE: getting shut down by a particular defense and you can't figure out how to beat them, you could get a coach tip advising you of a couple offensive sets/plays that would be effective.)

I would like to think my 30+ years of real world basketball knowledge and experience, albeit no longer hands-on experience at my age, would be enough that I could figure out how to beat what the game throws at me.

              Offense or defense?

OG mentioned on defense you can leave ACE on for coaching, and you can change individual players to do what you want, if you desire simutaneously.

I think we'll all have to re-learn how we play now but that's okay

Yea, for the sake of this thread i dont know who the hell Kobe Bryant or Danny Green is.

I do like the idea of valuing players of a certain style over another, but i thought 2k included that a while ago. Is it not deep enough?

This is one reason why im not very lenient with people on the forum during zero tolerance, because they take stuff too far and it gets out of hand and ruins alot of threads and the forums as well..... Just letting you know. Now please, back on topic guys

BTW, im not calling anyone out individually, but this is one thread that is useful, has great information and is sane, lets keep it that way.

Is there a place we can talk about players in actual in depth and NBA nerd detail and how it relates to player ratings?

It's always seemed kind of bizarre to me that there is only so much we're actually allowed to talk about the sport that this game is simulating as "sim nation", and analysis past a certain depth automatically becomes derailing, when that depth is just the beginning on a knowledgable basketball forum. It's just kind of weird that there's even such a thing as "talking too much NBA basketball" on a forum where we ostensibly want authentic NBA basketball in every nuance.

Now I understand that this thread had too much direct info to clutter, but there doesn't seem to be a natural place for deepening NBA discussions and trying to extrapolate what that means to the game. The often repeated take seems to be "OVR doesn't matter" and that seems hardly ideal a place to stop for a number that affects so much of how the game operates.

Is there a place we can legitimately geek out and bring it back to 2K as fitting that's not in another forum altogether and that isn't just in one giant mess of a thread? I mean it's not like we're on the Mario Brothers forum debating the finer aspects of Italian plumbing. Lol.

I missed that. So, I can make individual adjustments but at the same time have ace operating everything else on the floor? I wonder if I start a game with all my adjustments, then switch to ace after 6 minutes or so if when I switch to ace that they play according to what's happened into the game up and to that point? Do they auto adjust and account for Durant having 12 early points? It would be pretty cool to be able to just make a few key adjustments ourselves with ace making the proper adjustments on a let's say J. Noah. It would save a ton of time not having to make all those little adjustments ourselves. Looking forward to seeing these adjustments and how the defense adjusts in game for us as well for CPU against us.

Im sure ACE is there automatically but you can control how it all works when you want to. I think it's there according to that teams philosophy on already but yep I think OG addressed your concern on that one.

Yeah I totally get why this thread shouldn't be cluttered-- it would have been nice if some of the posts were moved to one of the ratings threads, and I was a little bummed a post asking what we want OVR to mean was deleted. Again, probably belonged elsewhere but seems it got wiped by merit of taking about NBA players (it pretty much has to) when clarification could lead to less chaotic discussion (probably not lol), or at least clarity on how it should matter to us and the game logic.

Almost seems like player ratings and discussions could benefit from a sub forum, where ratings for a player can be argued in depth in a thread. It's better than a revolving rating dumpster thread IMO. Speaking of which a dedicated Kobe thread could probably contain some of the discussion but it would get unwieldy if player specific rating threads started to clutter the gameplay forum, which is why I wonder if a dedicated ratings sub forum wouldn't serve that better.

But I do want to see how the CPU ai defends certain situations. If it's as smart as it sounds I might use more often. If not I'll just go back to what I always do make a million adjustments per game. But 1 thing I'm curious about that would maybe drive me crazy is when the CPU decides to double team for you? What if they did this late automatically and left a shooter wide open and if caught me by surprise? Or is it smart enough to send the double by leaving a non shooter open rather than a good shooter?

It's promising that we can scheme our specific defender rather than have all the logic based on the offensive player being guarded. Speaking of the AI being smarter, the discussion was on point that the freelance helps both in providing better simulation basketball and in making the game playable for casuals for the right reasons.

If anything Da Czar may have set back the development of my basketball knowledge for years-- I don't have to hit the play books as hard-- even if he has helped more people understand this is what good basketball feels like.

Is that layup animation where you get hacked and don't even get a shot up still in? I feel like no foul is called a lot of the time with it too so the frustration just piles on.
