Re: How do you guys use defensive settings?

Playing with the Lakers is tough, I go through all my defensive settings before every game, and then Swaggy and Lou just wander around the court looking at people in the stands.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

        On Ball Pressure
Gap: Non threat, Non Shooter (Tony Allen)
Moderate: Decent shooter, or vs someone that can blow by you (Andre Iguadola)
Tight: Good shooter that you can also stay in front of. (Klay Thompson)
Smother: Good shooter but I only use this vs. someone that can't really handle the ball. If you smother Kyrie, you will get burned. (Kyle Korver)

Off Ball Pressure : Be careful here because you also have to think about preventing offensive rebounding.
Gap: Non threat, Non Shooter (Tony Allen)
Moderate: Decent shooter (Eric Bledsoe); Non-threats but are good rebounders.
Tight: vs. Good shooters (Kyle Korver); You can also use this vs. great rebounders but you probably would want to help off of him so use at your discretion.
Smother: Use this when you are playing a great offensive threat. But be careful because you might give up backdoor cuts.

        Force Direction
I force everything to the baseline. Point blank, I don't want to give up any middle penetration.

On-Ball Screen and Off-Ball Screen You really only need to use this vs. people that will be the ball-handler in a PnR situation. So don't worry about setting this vs. Dwight
        Go Over: Shooter
        Go Under: Non-Shooter
Switch: I use vs vs. non-offensive threats. I also use this for people that won't really blow by my non-center bigs. You have to think about your 1-4 and their ability to stay in front of the player you are setting it up for.
Ice: Use this when you want the on-ball DEFENDER to force the ball-handler away from the screen. I would only use this when the on-ball defender is a strong defender. I wish this could be situational because I would only want to use this on the sideline pNr situations.

        Hedge
No-Hedge: Use this vs. an absolute non-threat perimeter player (Tony Allen)
Soft Hedge: I would use this against someone that isn't going to KILL you and won't probably look to score most of the time once they turn the corner. (PJ Tucker)
Hard Hedge: If you know this dude is going to turn that corner and look to score, use the hard hedge. (Bledsoe)
Double: Now, if this player can turn the corner and attack AND he has the ability to look for others out of the PnR situation, I would double him. (LeBron)

        Hedge (Center)
See the hedge section above, but you need to know who your center is. Depends on his footspeed (quickness) and on-ball defense IQ
        Soft: Non-athlete vs a scorer
        Hard: Athletic vs a scorer
        No-Hedge: Non-athlete vs. a non offensive threat
Double: Use at your judgement, but if your Center is too slow, he might struggle even getting into doubling position in time. You might get split honestly.

        Post
Front: If I front a player, I am doubling from the weakside. If I am getting killed by a player in the post, I will front him. I don't usually START off fronting anyone
Behind: If I am playing a non-post threat, I always play behind because I am not worried about them honestly.
3/4 Top: If I am playing against a post threat, I will start off with this. Again, this ties into my theory of forcing everything baseline. This shades your offensive player to the baseline.
3/4 Bottom: If you want to shade the player to the middle of the court (where your help can be sent) you can use this option. I sometimes trick people I play by putting this setting on a BAD post player so they can think they see an advantage. Again, use with discretion.

        Double Teams:
        Self Explanatory

So for pre rotate you want to pre rotate off bad shooters and pre rotate on good shooters? When it comes to on ball and off ball screen what do you do vs someone like James that can shoot some but is also hard to keep out of the paint? When it comes to post I never really front because I think if the player gets the ball it is just about a for sure basket for the post player. So 3/4 top forces things to the baseline so you can like use that has other defender? 3/4 bottom forces the player to the middle where you don't have the baseline to help you?

So pre-rotate should be called, "Pre-Rotate OFF OF."

So if I have Klay Thompson's defensive profile open in my coach settings, I would NOT pre-rotate off of him because he will make me pay. You would pre-rotate off of someone you wouldn't mind leaving open to go help

i am using the bulls to play in today's nba era. i have left ai coaching auto to see how it plays out. rem what the 2k guys said, the cpu will put the best defensive player to the opponent's best offensive player? sure they did! i was playing the nets, and somehow rodman switched to guard lopez. i was like, man lopez was big and great post player. how successful can rodman guard him in the game? dont get me wrong, i have high respect for the worm as he was so good in guarding malone and shaq in the post in real nba game.

i forsee i will use the defensive lineup very often to control who i wan my bulls player to guard unless the cpu prove me otherwise ... keke

One thing I often do is, if I use a team with a good defender, I match him up against their best scorer.

And if they have someone good in the middle, like Dwight, I might put a smaller guy who can shoot threes, to create a mismatch and spread the floor.

Example of good defenders: Trevor Ariza, Andrew Wiggins, Tony Allen, Jimmy Butler.

Another angle is, I might match my worst defender against their worst offensive threat - to hide my crap defender.

Good stuff on the pre- rotate DC that is the only setting I wasn't sure how it worked I was thinking like other people you pre-rotated to that person. For that reason alone I didn't touch it.

Excellent advice in this thread man. I learn new things about his game everyday.

One thing I always do is Force Baseline. I set this on everyone and this implements a "No Middle" strategy which is a real defensive concept.

If you play online ranked matches, you definitely wanna force everyone baseline to prevent people from easily driving towards the paint.
                              Lineup:
                              PG) Gary Payton
                              SG) '95-'96 Michael Jordan
                              SF) Sapphire Scottie Pippen
                              PF) '95-'96 Dennis Rodman
                              C) Hakeem Olajuwon

Guys, please tell me what defensive settings should I have so my perimeter guys would never come to help to defend pick n roll's? They always leave good shooters open.

Even when I have off ball pressure set on tight for all and I have set limit perimeter shots, perimeter players still come to help to defend pNr and this is where a lot of points I give up. Thanks
