After losing interest in MyGM numerous times - due to having all badges/facilities equipped - I'll have another go with the Wizards! All badges/facilities, except the scouting- and injuries/fatigue-related ones , have been unequipped FYI.
I love playing P&R's with John Wall in Play Now Online, so I'm obviously going to build on that concept: and the team is already well built for that purpose. Gortat is a great screen-setter and roll-man, and if the double team arrives, we have three capable shooters to kick it to: Beal, Porter and Morris.
There's some good talent in the second unit as well: Burke, Bogdanovic, Oubre and Mahinmi. I did want to get Mahinmi's big contract off the books though.
That's the first move I made: Ian Mahinmi and a 1st round pick for Tiago Splitter (76'ers) and a 2nd round pick. Splitter's contract is up at the end of the year and in the meantime he will be a serviceable back up to Marcin Gortat.
Next Up I tweaked my guard rotation a bit. Wall and Beal will obviously be starting, and while Trey Burke is a good backup to Wall, I wasn't too fond with the back up for Beal. So I decided to move Brandon Jennings (who wouldn't see minutes anyway) and two second round picks for the Spurs' Jonathon Simmons.
To open up a little bit more cap space, I also traded Jason Smith straight up for Kevin Seraphin, who's contract will also expire.
Which means my main rotation looks like this ahead of the season opener vs. the Atlanta Hawks:
PG: Wall / Burke
SG: Beal / Simmons
SF: Porter / Bogdanovic
PF: Morris / Oubre
C: Gortat / Splitter
The goal for the first season will be to finish top three in the conference, and after that, advance from the first round. I'll assess the situation from there. The team we have right now will be more than capable of doing that, but long term it's going to be a tough challenge to compete with the Cavs. For the partnership of Wall/Beal to really be effective, I do think we need a great center to set screens and roll. We have him right now in Gortat, but he's 32 already, so when Porter, Oubre and Beal reaches their absolute peak, he will be beyond his. I'll keep him around for the first season, but I need to clear some more cap space, in order to sign his replacement down the line. I doubt we will find a +80-rated center though...
If you guys have any suggestions in regards to how I should replace Gortat long term, feel free to let me know! He has three years left of his current deal, earning 12-13.5M per year. I'm currently thinking about two scenarios:
1.
Trade him after the first or second season, in a deal where we throw in near-to-all our picks along with Gortat for a younger, but similar big man.
2.
Let him play out his contract in Washington and then look to replace him in free agency. I think we can get a better quality player with this solution, as the cap will go up, and I have more time to shave some wages off the books, but there's a big catch to it: John Wall's contract is up the same year, and he's going to ask for a big time payday. We could still hurry up and get a big man in the first days of free agency, but then we'd have to pay a lot of luxury tax to resign John Wall. So I'm leaning towards the first solution. Too much risk involved in this one.
