    Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

Wanted to share my early park impressions:

Felt good, got three games in last night with my 6'8 point forward. Gameplay feels more weighted and contact was more prevalent. Got some nice forced pickups off of dribble spammers by just playing the angle.

I saw a playmaker PG attempt to be steph curry and fail miserably, also saw a point forward trying to hit contested threes and coming up empty. this bodes well for people having to learn to play to their strengths, at least for now. its funny how these guys both chose playmaking builds but then barely passed. I was looking at the TV with the Nick Young face.

me and a random post scoring C went to work on a squad of and 1 dribblers. shout out to my dude, always fun to get matched with a random and after a few plays realize that you're actually gonna share the ball and create good shots for each other. say what you want about the park, but that part is true to life. nothing bonds two strangers faster than the game of bball. and we've all played pickup with a dude who went nut and you wanted to kill him lol. I wanted to give this dude a virtual hug. I would have stayed longer but was already 2am east coast and id be dead right now.

the highest rated guys were preorder VC guys, (like me) around 85-86. took me about 120k in VC to fill the 80 upgrade slots you are given to start. hope the gameplay balance can remain even when guys start maxing out in the mid 90s. Happy with my build, had to really sacrifice on shooting off the dribble and post scoring, to add to where i wanted improvement. People are really going to have to evaluate how they play and where upgrades would take the most effect. FWIW, i ended up with 71 in open three, and was able to can two big ones in the last game i played. Both were open off of a good look. shout to my big man.

      Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

Lots of good impressions here so I'm just going to point out my biggest negative so far. This could be a result of me not being use to the controls and dribble stick so take that into account but I had instances last night where I would bump into a defender and it would force my player to pick up his dribble, playing on allstar. I felt like this happened too frequently especially since I was playing as Lebron. I feel like Lebron in most situations would absorb the contact and continue to dribble or atleast remain in control.

In one instance I was attempting to post up with Lebron as the shot clock was winding down. My plan was to attempt a fade away on my defender but he bumped me and it felt like I got caught in an animation not allowing me to shoot. I would have atleast liked if my player threw up a desperation shot when I attempted to shoot just to avoid the violation.

ive yet to beat my man 1 on 1 to the basket i straight up cant get by the defender he stays in front of me the entire time like hes a mix between mj and bruce bowen meets dennis rodman

the layup meter is the dumbest addition added to a bball game ive ever seen half the time i cant even see the meter to time it correctly and 90% of the time i dont know if my guy is gng to dunk it or go for a layup

the only thing i can say about this game is that its smooth other than that its trash a giant bag of trash and i bought the legendary edition to smh
Why is it that everyone who can't easily beat their defender or can't time layups (cuz its skilled based now instead of just holding down a button and hoping for the best) say the game isn't good? I've been watching sim players who know the game of basketball play on hall of fame and their getting to into the lane consistently with players who are good at getting in the lane in real life. Gotta have skills this year to do it, not just spamming dribble animations together which is why it's great.

Your mini review assures me this is going to be the best 2k in years because people who don't have skills are complaining.... Can't wait to play people like you online who can't resort to spamming dribble or rigged layups with high rated players, will be a great year where sim players will dominate spammers...

tbh if ur bumping your man that much u might need to rethink your dribbling actions, its all about trying to get around em with the setups then hit moves once you get momentum past em or get em going one direction

            Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

I know it's the first day, but I am extremely impressed with the gameplay. I feel like almost all of my complaints with 2K16 have been addressed, and this game is going to get some serious play time this year. (Still need to play a few FULL games on Superstar to see if the CPU cheese is eliminated)

After 2 hours of gameplay, these are the 3 things I think could improve..

            1. (Slow) Overhead passing- This is definitely an issue and I believe Mike and the team are looking to address it. This kills the AI ball movement and looks ugly in the process.

            2. Speed of plays and off-ball movement- This was an issue lash year. The play designs are great, but the speed in which they execute needs to increase quite a bit. It can get very clunky and bog down, particularly off-ball shooting plays.

            3. Speed of players on fast breaks- Sometimes players get unrealistic speed bursts (particularly defenders) when chasing down a fast break. (Overall, fastbreak logic has improved quite a bit)

also want to say its insane people are complaining about HOF difficulty when the game has been out 12 hours. apparently they have already mastered all the dribble moves in the arsenal. At this rate they'll be ready for 2k18 by midnight

I really like the screens this year too. They put a body on the defender. I haven't played a human yet, but I imagine this adds a lot to the online game as well since they cant just cheat around it every time.

After my first impression of the game not feeling good....

My mind has been changed already lol. Happens every damn year. The game feels really nice. I probably shouldn't have played online first to gather an impression anyways. The input lag online made the game feel so bad. Playing offline right now and it feels as precise as 2k16 did. 2k16 was pretty precise for me online, though, so hopefully after some patches these things clear up.

Having a lot of fun. The AI in this game is impressive and a step forward. I'm enjoying the plethora of stuff going on off-ball this year. (Thanks SimNation!!!)

So many weird random bumps that make me feel like I have less control over things. Playcalling doesn't feel as fluid. Substitutions are aesthetically over-complicated for no reason. Small things that turn me off. I'll get used to them as I always do every year, but so far...... meh

Edit: also still doing the thing where passes dont go to who i direct them to. lmfao seriously 2k...
I kind of noticed the same thing. After messing around with 2k17 for an hour or two I went back to 2k16 to see and feel the difference. When I went back to 2k16 I felt like I had an easier time controlling my players because 2k17 has a much looser feel to it and is also a lot quicker.

I think it comes down to me being more familiar with 2k16. I know the feel of the game, I know how animations will play out and branch together, and I know when certain moves will work.

With 2k17 it's like I'm learning everything all over again. Not a bad thing. This is the type of change I've wanted 2k to make for awhile it's just now I need to adapt to this change. Like most changes in life it's a little scary at first because it's different than what's familiar and comfortable.

*response to your edit. I'm pretty sure you can change how the game reads your input for passes, I know this was an option last year. If you go to controls in settings I believe you have 3 options: default, stick direction, and openness. I am basing this off last year's game so it is possible this option has been changed or removed. Also play around with the over head skip pass (Triangle/Y). That can help when trying to a player further from you not the player closest to you.

Loving this game. It just feels right. I know others has said it doesn't feel fluid idk if that's due to difficulty level or the changes in dribbling. But this games feels great in feels like basketball. The player movement on both sides of the ball.

                        Love the new shooting mechanics.

Well that's a quick turnaround. Glad to see you're enjoying it more. They did a lot in 1 cycle. When I step back and realize how much they've added n the last 3 years it's honestly amazing.

You are probably right. I spent the majority of last night trying to get a feel of the movement and contols on offense and I definitely don't have them down yet. I'm just still accustom to the feel of 2k16 which is much different. It probably didn't help that I was half asleep while playing and wasn't really using smart strategy.

Do you have any tips or hints for the dribble stick and performing size ups? It was tough for me to get a feel of the controls in this area. At times I felt like I was getting a grip of the dribbling and then others times I felt like I was either getting lucky or just completely lost out there.

The game is definitely improved in many ways. Quick 1st impressions...

+Shooting feels great! They nailed it this year especially Steph Curry! From the signature shots, to the signature arc of shots, release points, etc.. Kudos for that 2K

+Love the improved rebounding! There's a real battle for the boards now. This was much needed.

+The net physics are perfect this year! Love it.

+Player movement is much more organic like others have mentioned. I'm not feeling stuck in too many 2 man animations & the game definitely flows a lot smoother.

+Physics seemed to have improved. Not seeing as much Player clipping as I did last year.

+The dribbling is awesome. Loving how I can break out of dribbles now. Again they nailed the signature dribbles as well (Steph Curry & Kyrie are going to be a problem this year!)

+Definitely digging the new user interface & menu system. Nice touch.

+The game loads a lot faster which is nice.

+Love the new sliders that were added! They are game changers for me. Being able to adjust the sensitivity of passes & body ups to help prevent defensive players sticking to you like glue is huge!

+Retro players look much better this year! Seems like retro players got more attention than the current players lol. I love having classic teams in the game so I'm glad they got some love.

Those are the improvements that immediately stood out but I'm sure there's many more. The game still has it's legacy issues unfortunately (selective random ball tangibility, players sliding into position when receiving passes etc..) These issues have to get fixed. They're holding the game back.

Speaking of which, I play on the 2K Wire cam (Zoom 8, Height 2) & I have one major problem so far. When inbounding the ball, players will sometimes slide about 5 feet into position to receive the pass. I don't recall this happening last year so I'm hoping it's just a bug. 2K PLEASE fix this! It's a HUGE eyesore & immersion killer.

-Some of the player models leave a lot to be desired. LeBron's calves are way too thick (why they continue to give him cankles is beyond me). Chris Paul looks like the Hulk smh. Idk why 2K always butchers CP3? He needs a new body type ASAP! Giannis's, Anthony Morrow's, Dennis Schroeder's, Gordon Heyward's, Evan Fournier's, Cody Zeller's, Stanley Johnson's & Wiggins arms are too skinny, etc.. That skinny arm player model needs to be reserved for Durant & Ingram only. Steph needs to have his body type from last year (changing it when was perfect in 2K16 is a head scratcher). Some of the jerseys are incorrect as well (Pistons, Lakers, Warriors, etc..) Hopefully these blunders can be patched or corrected in a roster update.

-Passing still isn't where it needs to be (some passes are still a little floaty). 2K needs to make passing button pressure sensitive ala Madden. Meaning if I want to throw a bullet pass I just hold the corresponding pass button down. If I want to throw a touch pass I just tap the pass button, etc...Idk why they have yet to implement this. As it stands right now, passing is like a crap shoot, you have no control over the amount of weight behind it.

-Still get that "stuck in mud" feel at times when trying to blow by a defender after beating him off the dribble (although not as bad as last year)

-Even though they added a "speed with the ball" rating, speed differential still is not where it should be. I still feel like I get slowed down at times on fastbreaks or when I have a clear path to the basket. Defenders seem to be able unrealistically keep up at times.

-The CPU is taking way too many ill advised 3's. I understand it's a 3 point shooting league now, but they went a little overboard with it this year. I'm seeing players who aren't even 3 point shooters taking steps back 3's, fade away 3's, etc... Granted you can adjust this with the tendency slider but it needs to be tuned.

-Players still occasionally dribble or go out of bounds for no reason.

-Having the same assistant coach in the huddle for every team during timeouts is just goofy & makes you want to skip through it.

Overall 2K17 feels like what 2K16 should've been. I was skeptical going in but I came away impressed for the most part so far. Just fix those legacy issues ESPECIALLY the sliding & this game will be great. Again 2K, please fix the problem with the player receiving the inbound pass sliding into position in a patch. I cringe every time I see it.

So far I love the game. That said I still have legacy complaints. MyCareer being a solo experience yet relying on the 2K servers is just not right. I've lost progress because of server disconnects three times already (I have a 1gb internet connection). That and the need for 2K to allow us once again to have sliders is very apparent. As solid as the game plays out of the box, it could use some fine tuning that sliders would allow.
