I've never understood "top 5 protected" or "lottery protected" and stuff like that. But I feel it's a big part of the trading process from what I can see.

If someone could explain and give me a scenario where it works that would be great.

Thanks guys and sorry for the noob question!
It's actually a lot simpler than it seems. Example: The Clippers owe their 2017 1st rounder to the Raptors thanks to a past trade. That pick is protected, 1-14, which means if it anywhere between or equal 1 through 14 in the draft order, the Clippers get to keep it.

If the pick is 15th, the Raptors gain ownership.

Top 5 works in a similar manner, as does top 3.

The swap rules are a little more confusing, but that's mostly how 2K worded it. Basically, "Swap Best" means that the team with the "Swap Best" pick will get the higher of the two team's draft picks.

An example of this is the Celtics -- they have "Swap Best" rights with the Nets, which means whichever 1st round draft pick is higher in the draft AKA is in the lottery, or top 10, or top 5, etc, the Celtics get that one and the Nets -- since they have the "Swap Worst" option in this trade -- get the worst AKA lower of the 1st rounders.

So, if the Nets have a horrible year, the Celtics will exchange their draft pick with the Nets, meaning the Celtics get the much higher draft pick in the top 10 (likely) and the Nets get a draft pick in the bottom 10 (likely).

2K could have worded it better. I use this site to read up on trades like that, it's remarkably helpful in keeping it all straight.

        Thank you for the explanation!

What is the overall purpose of these protected picks? What advantages/disadvantages are there to trading these kinds of picks away or trading for them?

I mean, would the NBA be able to function normally if they did away with all the protected stuff?

We'll start with your last question: in short, yes. In fact, the NBA functioned for decades without pick protections, they've only become so commonplace in the last ... oh, I'd say 10-12 years. Teams used to trade future picks six years down the line -- the Grizzlies traded a 2003 1st round pick in 1997 for some player.

However, draft picks have become much more valuable in that time period -- largely due to the fact that
          A) rookies are locked onto a salary scale, so they're not making 20-30M a year like stars are and
          B) teams have learned that trading so any future picks without protections can leave you extremely vulnerable to disaster and leave your team without any young talent to replenish the roster, or grow into local stars (see the current Nets).

The advantages of protections are, largely, to the team putting the protections on them -- usually the team trading their 1st round pick. In the case of the Clippers example, the lottery protection is on it so, if the Clipper suffer a catastrophic injury or have an unexpected horrible year and finish in the lottery, they won't lose the pick for nothing; that franchise traded an unprotected pick to the Cavs some years ago to get rid of a large contract (Baron Davis) and that pick turned into Kyrie Irving.

In another world, Blake Griffin and Kyrie Irving have been teammates for years and throwing lobs to one another.

Trading unprotected picks is usually very risky and most GMs put lottery protections on their 1st rounders. However, if the player they're acquiring is very valuable to the franchise they're currently with, the rival organization will usually mandate that very light protections be put on the 1st rounder -- like Top 3, or Top 5.

This is the case for what happened with the Wizards and Markieff Morris last season. The Suns wanted to trade Morris, but didn't want to trade him for scraps -- no 2nd rounders. The Wizards wanted Morris and offered a 1st rounder, likely with lottery protection to begin with (slots 1-14) but the Suns demanded that the pick only be protected 1-8 (I think). The Wizards pick ended up 9th, as I recall, and the Suns took Chriss with that, in addition to drafting Bender earlier with their own pick.

Protections are usually there to ensure that the team trading the pick has a chance at retaining it, should the worst happen. Protections usually become less if the pick isn't conveyed the first year, but there are some instances with teams that are often in the lottery -- the Kings -- that the protections are the same until the pick is conveyed or the pick hits its limit in terms of time -- protections don't last indefinitely, usually for three season, and if the pick isn't conveyed by the third season, it usually turns into 2nd rounders or the pick simply isn't owed to the team anymore.

Miami is 17-25 and the third worst team in the East, so I'm thinking of moving Bosh... who's heathly in my MyLeague... How about:

HOU Gets - Chris Bosh, Luke Babbitt

MIA Gets - Ryan Anderson, Montrezel Harrell, 16 1st Rounder Unprotected, and 18 1st Rounder (Top 10 Protected)

              * The Rockets are currently 27-17 and third in the West.

Other possibilities for Bosh that I quickly threw together:

              - Bosh and Babbitt to T'Wolves for a Rubio, Pek and picks package
              - Bosh and Babbitt to Celtics for Amir Johnson, Jerebko, Nets 18 1st and the Clippers 19 1st (Lottery Protected)
-Bosh and Tyler Johnson to Cleveland for Love and JR Smith. (to rejoin Lebron because Lebron likes him better than Love).
              - Bosh back to Toronto for Valanciuans and a mix of players on both sides. It Ross, Joseph or Patterson all work for Toronto, so it depends what Miami would want back and which Miami player Toronto would need back to make it match player wise

I feel like adding him to Houston, Minnesota or Toronto would push those teams up a tier for sure. Boston could probably offer the best package (future wise), but Cleveland or Toronto would make a better story.

Ouch at that Heat record. Josh Jackson it is!! I vote for Bosh to the Rockets, although back to the Raptors would be a good story. Contemplating on when I'm going to start my league, having trouble finding a balance with the gameplay. Mid 3rd qrt-all 4th qrt to be exact.

Aside from that....I know it's not realistic but does anyone have any trade ideas for bringing Marcus Smart to Miami? I have a blast playing with him when I use the Celtics. Also, a trade idea for Devin Booker? I wanted the Heat to draft him so bad but I'm definitely fine with Winslow in real life. He fits the Heat culture.

Hmm. Just on the whole, I feel like any picks involved for trading Bosh must be well-protected, no unprotected picks. Bosh may be healthy in your MyLeague, but he still had his season cut short in back to back years (before the playoffs for the Heat) and that's worrisome for any team that trades for him. If he's not going to be around for the postseason, what is he doing there in the first place?

As such, the risk for whatever team that takes on Bosh's situation (and contract for the next two seasons) is high. The only teams I see considering that on your list would be the Raptors or the Cavs. Houston is already 3rd out West and adding Bosh doesn't push them past the Warriors -- if the Rockets can maintain the 3rd or 2nd seed, they avoid Golden State till the conference Finals. It's in their best interest to maintain where they are and let some upset minded teams take on the Warriors.

Toronto naturally would love to have Bosh back and use him to get even further in the playoffs -- like the Finals -- and Bosh would end up on his best Toronto team ever. Trading Valanciuans is a steep price, but if they include him and Ross + that 2017 Clippers pick (which the Clippers, now without CP3, may very well get to keep if they tank hard) would be a more than fair trade risk wise. Miami would get a youngish veteran to pair with Whiteside (Joey V is actually a good PF) or a part they can flip to go younger if you want to run this as a three-team trade. That 2017 1st rounder from the Clippers may not convey this year, but if it doesn't it'll convey next year and the Heat need the draft picks since they traded so many to the Suns for Dragic (did that ever backfire).

The Cavs trade could work for LeBron, but seeing as how Cleveland actually won the whole thing with Love and Love had the single best defensive possession of his life at exactly the right moment, I don't see Love getting traded this season unless the Cavs completely fall apart at some point and utterly disappoint. If they do that, Love will be the scapegoat. For Miami, the trade doesn't make a ton of sense as Love's contract is slightly nicer than Bosh's, but Love would still be reduced to a sniper role as he's been in Cleveland since Whiteside will eat the post space. Plus, neither he or JR Smith would be happy being on a lottery team, which is exactly what the Heat should be aiming to be for the next few seasons in order to build up their talent base (and keep their picks).

So, I vote Bosh to Toronto.

Playing with the Kings and want to do a complete rebuild to get a fresh start with the new arena, jerseys, and coach (Dave Joeger). Looking a for a deal that makes sense for Cousins. Do we think the Suns would trade Marquese Chriss and Devin Booker for Cousins? Or is Booker already untouchable due to his mini breakout late last year plus a dominant summer league and early pre season?

I'm looking for a more player heavy return as opposed to picks because I play every game and not sure I will have time to play more than 2 seasons so future picks aren't a ton of fun. Not against getting picks in return but would rather the sexiest part of the return to be rotation players so the first year isn't so miserable.

Suns won't trade Booker. He's not absolutely untouchable but they aren't going to trade their best young player AND a top pick.

If Cousins comes to PHX, the Suns are probably only willing to part with one of Len/Chandler, one of Tucker/Warren, one of Chriss/Bender, one or two first rounders. Obviously it's not 3 players and 2 picks but you can probably take 2 players listed above and one pick, or one player and three total picks.

I'm still thinking the Bulls may eventually move Jimmy. I'm starting a Twolves franchise and would be interested in bringing him to Minnesota.

Obvioulsy, Minnesota has a ton of young talent, but I don't see them keeping everyone from Lavine / Dunn / Towns /Wiggins . Someone will be an odd man out.

I wanted to work a deal with Lavine / Twolves 2017 1st for Butler, but I cannot get Chicago to bite. Any ideas?

                                January 2017.
Eric Gordon is injured for the rest of the season, while Mudiay is out 1/2 months. Toronto is still looking for a big man cause Poetl is not living up to his high pick, and Sullinger is not a starter.
So what do you think about this trade to make everyone happy:

                                HOU receives:
                                Will Barton

                                DEN receives:
                                Pat Beverley
                                D-Mo
                                Terrence Ross

                                TOR receives:
                                Kenneth Faried

Toronto then signs PJ Hairston from the FA pool.

I think it's pretty realistic and I could see this happen in the real NBA.
