Can someone explain the mechanics behind "Auto" for me?

Is this when the AI makes a decision based off of the player's defensive IQ? If this is the case then guys with low defensive IQ should be making dumb plays if you leave it up to them.

We should be telling them what to do on the court. We are the coaches.

Re: The MESS that is 2K17's help defense... How to fix THREAD

Played another game with my Sam's settings with a few more added setting changes.

      ACE - Off
On Ball and Off Ball D-Tight
      Screen-Go Over
      Hedge-Soft Hedge
      Help D-Help All
      Switch All

And I set individual settings per player as well. Game play is much better. I'm still noticing at times my C gets lost and gives up that easy basket in transition but its gotten much better. The soft hedge seems to alieviate alot of problems with screens. My big man jump right back to their man after a screen. Even tipping the passes more often if the ball handler decides to pass to the roller. Also, with help D set to on, I don't see as many uncontested layups as I did before. My teammates will roll from the weak side or from anywhere to defend a shot in the paint. Seems much more fluid now.

Auto triggers depending on many under the hood factors. If a PG keeps lighting you up from deep, the game is supposed to switch stratergies and switch the setting to tight on ball d, or deny off ball d. If a player is killing you down low, the game is supposed to switch to doubling in the post automatically. Same with other settings. They automatically adjust depending on personnel. Thing is, auto barely ever works.

That is the million dollar question.

Are you talking screen rules individual settings "Auto"? I think this is supposed to play to the ratings of the defensive ratings. The ratings are going to decide how fast your AI responds and it also depends if you have ACE on or off.

I actually have been meaning to ask a clarifying question, for anyone who may know.

I'm not 100% sure which player is affected by the "hedge" option.

To clarify, if I set my defensive settings against, say, Russell Westbrook. I can set options such as go under/over or ICE for the on-ball defender. But when I go below that to hedge, my assumption has always been that if I set hedge to "soft hedge," then for any screener (of the other players), that screener's defender will soft hedge. And I've always assumed that the purpose of the separate lines for center was that I could, say, play soft hedge for all screeners except for the center, who I could have drop and contain the drive instead. So if I set it to "go under" and "catch hedge," and then go to the center line and set it to "go under" and "no hedge," then the players guarding positions 2-4 on the court will play catch hedge if their man screens for Russ, whereas the center will only drop to contain. At least, this is how I've always assumed it worked.

But, does that hedge option actually affect how Westbrook's defender behaves when Westbrook sets an on-ball screen for someone else?

Does this make sense? Can anyone clarify?

This might be a ******** question to ask, but where can I find all these defensive settings? I can find the option for turning off ACE, but I can't find the options for adjusting gameplan. Are these even available in MyCareer?

No, it affects only the P&R initiator

                  Bookmarked.

Not sure how this got past quality testing because it was so blatantly obvious.

you can't fix the bad defense - it's hardcoded into the game. you can try to mask it or band aid it here and there like sam pham is trying to do, but this game needs major, major tuning - period. it's a mess.

While it may need a patch or maybe even a rework, I think what you're saying isn't true.

I'm not a 2K apologist either, in case you or anyone thinks I am blindly defending them. I criticize this game a whole lot.

To the point - the content of the defensive adjustments in this thread literally change the game's playstyle and playability in a profound way. There are measurable, tangible and inarguable results.

I understand your frustration, as I share it, but this thread is gold and people who contribute should be appreciated.

I don't want to sound...uhm dickish but I gotta wonder what Czar and OG did in this cycle. It's starting to makes sense that they didn't have a dev blog this year.

It just seems odd that all the prepatch problems from 2k16 made its way to 2k17. This really shouldn't happen.....

I think you are absolutely right about that. Clearly, someone fell short somewhere. The issue comes with understanding how complex the development>publishing process is. If John is working on shooting and does his job perfectly, but Mary adds in some settings that messes it up or submits the wrong file, not only is it not John's fault, but he can't go online and talk about it until he figured out what Mary did. Once he does that, he can't go online and deflect blame or discuss the issue in a way that outs Mary. The best thing for John to do is to fix it (FIX IT!!!) and show up after he has a stable build with the fix in.

I'm not saying that has happened in this case, I'm saying that it does happen. All the time. While I disagree with how 2k handles these scenarios from a communication standpoint, and I CERTAINLY disagree with a lot of the issues I'm seeing in the game I paid 59.99 for, it's not rational to try to identify cause or blame without having intimate knowledge of the entire process.

Just as an example, I don't know who is in charge of putting moving screen calls in the game, but I have not seen one called. I'm in February of MyCareer and have played a handful of ProAM games. Not one moving screen call. How does that affect a defense? Real life KG would act a fool if he knew he could get away with all these moving screens

2K already brought Da Czar in, why not bring this guy? Imagine Da Czar, Sam Pham, and Beluba? That'd be THE DREAM TEAM
