No animations should be impossible to break out of.

In other words, you should be able to break out of all animations to at least resume running.

So when you're stumbling, you should be able to get out of that so that you run back on defense.

Look at the NBA. Look at that alley-oop by Lebron where he stumbles during a ******* dribble. He still makes it up to get to the alley-oop.

That's a special case, but every other player in the league would at least be able to run.

So let us at least move and break out of your sh*tty animations.

Something else that really pisses me the hell off is that you can't do a spin move or behind the back move without turning the ball over.

The point of dribble moves is to create space. That being said, No one is gonna do a spin move or behind the back move if nobody is pressing up and playing tight on them.

So what's the damn point of these moves if we can't even use them properly?

SOooo...you're saying if me and you were playing right now and you hit me with a series of crossovers and hesi's and you draw me into a anklebreaker animation, i should be able to breakout of the anklebreaker like this?

Re: What animations do you feel need to be added and removed to and from the game?

In the NBA, nobody really gets their ankles broken. They just slip. And they don't act uncoordinated while getting up.

In 2K, we're just stuck in that animation until the 2K engine feels like we should get up. That's just stupid.

Guess what I'm saying is that animations shouldn't be so drawn out and long.

2K18 needs to let us be in more control of our players. Not being stuck in animations.

This is the main problem on D.

We're getting pulled into screens. Hell, we're getting screened by our own team's players.

We're getting killed by weird ankle breakers.

Hustle animations like picking up a loose ball as a defender is impossible (loose balls almost always go to the offense).

Rebound animations imo are still f*cked (ball slips through the player's hands into the CPU's hands for no reason).

Too often we're seeing the "phasing" animation where arms, hands, balls, body parts, just move through another to complete the animation.

2K has a lot of issues.

Re: What animations do you feel need to be added and removed to and from the game?

2k18 really has to make it a priority to tweak these animations man. Playing over the weekend it became more and more obvious that this game is missing a ton in regards to defensive movement and off ball player movement. I think someone mentioned in this thread or another thread that they need to add a defensive stutter step animation.

Watching I.T. vs Bulls yesterday it was apparent that those little defensive stutters when I.T. catches guys off guard is one thing that allows him to be so effective in real life. Those stutters coupled with his speed allows him to get shots off against bigger guys. The lack of this animation can help to render CPU/USER I.T. borderline ineffective. Like fakeassc and others have said I think they need to speed up the animations in this game as well.

This game really NEEDS ride the hip animations! I know 2k wanted to completely gut 2-player animations but I think this one is necessary. Watching 2k dribblers vs defenders interact can look pretty bad at times. You can either get a dribbler going by the defender while the defender runs in place against the side of him or the dribbler gets bumped back which looks like a flagrant 1 that also takes forever to animate. Imagine this-I.T. gets a step on Rondo. Rondo tries to stay with him riding his hip. I.T. stops on a dime with a well executed step back. Rondo stumbles back trying to recover as IT pulls up for the J..SWISH! I see this in the NBA but rarely in 2k17...You can beat people with dribbling in 2k17 but it can look less organic than how I just described the I.T. moment.

Dribbling also appears to be just a visual and as someone mentioned here or in another thread it really doesn't take into account defender proximity and lacks a purpose. They need more animations that show off dribbling while being guarded rather than all these fancy dribbles in open space...

EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

Every single defensive animation needs to be tweaked...going through screens is like....game breakingly frustrating..and when I say game breaking, I mean makes you want to take your game out and break it...

The ankle breaker animation where a playmaker does a snatch back and your guy kinda jumps on his tippy toes...dumb animation...

The stupid L2 foul animation where a guy just plows into you trying to get around you to drive baseline and then you swipe at him as he spams the shoot button and you always smack him and never strip the ball...DUMB..

The animation where you're going up and someone somehow strips the ball and it's out on you is dumb...

2k NEEDS to add some type of momentum animations based on how hard or soft you're pressing the stick and turbo on defense..for the love of God can we please get an inbetween defense..you either don't use L2 (intense defense) and try to guard with just the stick..resulting in your guy getting blown by...or you use L2 and foul or get crossed up and fall...

OMG I almost forgot on offense...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...please take out the automatic Fade aways..also, PLEASE take out or reduce the amount of times my guy AVOIDS contact...

What I mean is: On offense if Im a sharpshooter and I'm open and someone kicks it to me and someone is running out to contest late...in real life I'm NOT fading away..I'm gonna just pull up..if he hits me that's a foul on them...

Driving to the basket my guy does WAY too many finesse lay ups...like, dude there's always a center just standing in the paint on D...in real life if you see a guy THAT deep in the paint, you're going to attack and TRY to get contact...you almost never see players try to avoid contact from a guy STANDING in the circle...if he's running at you on your lay up MAYBE then because you're not sure if they're gonna call charge or not..but if you look and see his feet in that circle you're gonna run in...

Offensive players try to avoid contact from bad defensive players WAY too much on this game

Totally agree that we need ride the hip animations, but back to offense, not sure if I already said this but mine as well say it again.

For the love of god, PLEASE take out the animations where your player does 1 of 3 things:

                  1. Throws the ball out of bounds when trying to do a fake pass on a drive to the basket (Honestly why the f--k is this still in the game?!)

                  2. Throws up some crazy, uncontrollable, contact shot when trying to go up for a layup, no matter how far away from the basket you are.

                  3. Turns the ball over while trying to drive to the basket just because you bumped into someone on the other team

If these have been said already then just consider it a +1

I'll add some highlight footage later of what I'm talking about.

Add: Fade out catch and shoot foot planting animations need to be brought back ASAP. If I decide to fade out on a fastbreak to shoot a 3 my guy automatically starts dribbling instead of getting set for the shot which totally kills the rhythm of the shot AND it allows the defense to recover while you wait to gather yourself.

Honestly the foot planting on any moving catch and shoot sequence is clunky this year. Last year it was fine, what happened?

Remove: That god awful spinning 360 twirl jumpshot animation you do when you're underneath the rim with your back to the goal. It's an auto block and I doubt anyone would attempt a layup like that.

I'm playing 2K16 again and the animations I'm getting on contact layups are so much better in 2K16 compared to the crap ones in 2K17.

@VAWereWolf65. All your points are good, but the 2nd point really pops out if you play 2K16 again. It's insane how contact feels natural.

Also, dribbling into defenders should result in you pausing like you do in 2K16, NOT turning around and posting them up like you do in 2K17.

OK. E.g. of 2K16 being better than 2K17. Go to 3:03. Watch that sequence where Smoove bumps into the defender. Smoove is able to break of that bump against the defender and goes into 2 behind the back dribbles. Then look at that layup animation. Tell me you can get that layup animation in 2K17. with that degree of smoothness.

                          1. Better and more useful first step animations.

A huge part of NBA offenses is attacking closeouts. Very rarely do you see an offensive player not managing to drive by a defensive player closing out to contest a potential jumpshot.

Hell, some of the bigger guys with range (Towns, Embiid) are finding success, because they're constantly attacking opposing slow Cs off the dribble after a closeout.

Also in general, blow-bys on mismatches happen during that first step. Not after a billion crossovers and stepbacks.

The only way I can emulate that in game is while in triple-threat position, jabbing once or twice and then launching hard, so as to get that good animation. But it's very time consuming and you can't do it off the catch.

Adding that could possibly lead to the quickest guys (IT, Kemba) playing like themselves, instead of being relegated to 3-point shooters or PnR creators.

Of course everything relies on them fixing help defense AI. If they can't/won't do that, then the only way to keep scores reasonable is to buff on-ball D as is already the case.

                          2. More animations for shooting around the paint. Very rarely do you see people shooting jumpshots from inside 2 meters, it's all floaters or push-shots or something just as quick to get off.

Playing inside with players like Millsap, Thad Young or James Johnson is very unlike themselves. They have great touch around the basket, but you can't exploit it.

How about if i defender goes up to block your shot & he gets faked or mis times it, he shouldn't be able to recover in time when you go up for a dunk, & on a fast break when you pass a ball to a player, he won't move to the basket & takes an open jumper because thats what 2k wants = bs & that transition defense, this is the 3rd yr in a row & the sam cheese is in the game, I swear every since 2k has the park, the online game is horrible & more cheesy

Super slow unrealistic lob passes you throw at times. Having a guy sealed off in the post and not being able to run away from him like he has a hold of you and get called for the 3 seconds, the random at times i'm on D and playing a little off my man towards the paint to help protect that and I become frozen for a few seconds where I can't move at all. the stupid tip in animations where guys are reaching so far behind there bodies with one arm and making them at alarming rate no matter where it's triggered from, got beat by boogie from one he done from almost the free throw line contested the other night. The alley oop animations are all horrendous and all need to be looked at and addressed. A lot of other animations as others as mentioned in the post as well but these are what I would like to see fixed. Honestly I agree with taking a year off in between cycles at least this year. Every year we are getting the same hard coded issues from past 2ks that never get addressed and usually just add newer issues on top of those so maybe it's time to start this game over from scratch.

Slow, lob passes are horrible. Nobody throws those in the real nba.

Also, what the hell is up with not being able to throw an accurate ally oop in this game? How hard could it possibly be to toss the ball to the guy who's cutting to the hoop, especially when you're a professional basketball player.
