I like the personality badges and think they need to stay.

Those other ones definitely gotta go. They took it too far...

I like some of them, but creating a balance between them is difficult, and there needs to be a better way of highlighting these different skills/traits in players.

They should implement as Football Manager players 'Preffered Moves' so that you can differentiate players as animations and tricks yet all of the attributes has to be seen just as ratings w/o artificial unnatural boosts.

          Did NBA 2K11 have badges?

What they should do is remove all badges from the NBA rosters and let the ratings/tendencies do their work. Remove personality badges from, but cap players to a certain number of badges AND tiers. To me, the highest tier should be gold.

I would suggest capping ratings, but the current NBA is making that an unfair resolution.

No. Badges are essential to making the game feel realistic at this point. Steph can only be Steph if he has HOF Limitless Range, there is no other way to give him that ability through ratings. Him and prime Korver may both be 99 shooters, but only one puts fear in your heart when he pulls up from 40. LeBron should have HOF Relentless Finisher. Kyrie absolutely needs HOF ankle breaker. The badges aren't ruining the game, people are. I love badges, they give the game more personality. More diversity. I made a thread about my custom roster where I gave out more HOF badges and it made the game play much more realistically. Giving IT a few HOF layup badges made him feel like the tiny scoring machine he is instead of getting blocked every play. Giving Derozan HOF mid-range deadeye and difficult shots made him feel like that incredibly frustrating matchup that he is, making ridiculous shots in players faces. Guys that truly excel above others should be rewarded with that boost. Giannis is another one who plays more like his real life counterpart with these badges.

Everyone's problem has to be MyPark/Pro Am because in every other mode it's not really an issue. MyPark/Pro Am is always going to be broken but badges are the least of our worries. It's not that players have HOF badges, it's that they're too easy to grind for. Put the game on rookie and you can get to the ASG with all 5. Call me crazy, but I don't think a mode that allows you to possibly compete for a quarter million dollars should be able to be gamed by playing on rookie difficulty. This is where the system falters.

When some 13 year old with no real ability get's coddled because he was able to make 100 threes on rookie difficulty and the badge allows him to be just as effective as somebody who played on HOF and and is a way better player in general. It's the fact that 2K allows you to buy attributes and spam badges. I seen a guy on YouTube make a sharpshooter, maxed out his shooting while in college and entered the league as the best shooter of all time. The real problem 2K needs to fix is making these modes separate. Running into an all time great, All-99s, 5 HOF badge shooter should be rare. But since they have no real control over how these things are obtained, they are super common. In the real game there is one guy with HOF limitless and he worked his entire life to get that way. The real problem arises when everybody can replicate this in a few hours.

Most people in this thread are talking about these modes, because in the base game only about 6 players even have them.

Anything that badges do could be implemented as ratings and it would make more sense and give more diversification on particular area. I dont see why there couldn't just be deep range shot rating so curry could be curry. Badges is just lazy solution to add individuality to players and if they keep them i hope the power creep in online modes wouldn't be as bad. Also its big problem that they dont update badges on official roster, makes no sense as they just as important as ratings right now (if not more in some cases) .

Having a range rating makes the issue more complicated. Now you have to do math work in measurements of the floor. We all know 2K is notoriously vague with how ratings work to begin with. I think the badge system is perfect for differentiating skill from ability. I for one think almost all guards should be able to do complicated dribble moves and that they shouldn't be locked behind a rating. Let's be real, all of these guys have been dribbling for 90% of their lives. Realistically every guard is capable of advanced dribbling, it's just some are more effective chaining moves and creating space. Which is why Kyrie has HOF ankle breaker and Steph has Gold even though they both have 98 ball control.

Another example is acrobat. Every perimeter player in the NBA is capable of those sexy, highlight layups. However some guys are better at converting them. On a regular layup drive Dennis Schöder is actually fairly clise percentage wise. However we both know Kyrie is arguably the best finisher in the game, especially with those acrobatic, adjusted layups. Do we lower Schröder because he isn't as good at those finishes? No. Kyrie gets a badge, Acrobat, that allows him to do more than Dennis even though they are pretty close in ratings. Or think about a guy like Tony Parker who excels with floaters but may not be as good getting all the way to the rack as he used to? Insert: Tear Dropper.

Badges in sports games have always been something I love since the system that was in place on Live 04 and Madden in 08. There are some things ratings just can't quantify and if they do, we'll end up with 500 sliders in create-a-player. No number can tell me how quick Crawford can get hot or how Jordan and Kobe get better in the clutch while Harden seems to crumble. What slider is there for a guy like LeBron who rarely gets any "rim protection", half-court blocks, but is a terrorist to guys trying to score on a fast break? Do you give him Rudy Gobert block ratings with John Wall speed to make this possible, or do you just give him a characteristic that makes him excel at blocks in transition?

I could present a dozen more of these scenarios. Is the badge system perfect? No, but neither is any other aspect of this game. Getting rid of badges is a bad idea in my opinion. It's important to be able to differentiate the nuances between guys whose ratings should be similar. Like I mentioned with Curry and Korver.

Re: Anyone else want badges removed?

Badges are fine. 2k needs to address the elephant in the room. Defense.

How did 2k think the archetype system would play out when you decided to make all defensive archetype like the lock down defender/paint protector?
You basically told the community you can grind on your player all you want, but if you don't create a lockdown archetype, you will never be able to have high lateral quickness to cut off faster players/v cuts/Y-cuts/users who spam dribble moves, or have the lateral movement to cut off cutters and guard the pick and roll. Playmakers, sharpshooters, glass cleaners, point forwards, slashers/ath;etic finishers just dont have the movement to guard alot of the basic basketball movements on the court.

I say we worry about getting to make everyone able to have high defensive attributes if they want to, not just lockdowns, because everyone else is at a clear disadvantage when it comes shutting your opponent down.

All I see from the community now, is a majority of everything that was added to be removed now. I don't get it anymore.

the HOF tier just made the game feel very arcadey.

Badges don't need to be policed. People need to start getting with the program and grind for your badges and play to the best of your abilities and quit complaining. If its cheese, I'm sure the community will notice and the devs will adjust as needed, but enough about these badges needing to be removed. 2K is tei months away from release, let's just see what the devs came up with and play ball.
