They also don’t give him his own dunk package. You have to manually select it. Same goes for Kemp, Shaq and Dominique dunk packages (maybe more). Magic Johnson had the Gervin layup package in 2K21 now they give him the standard generic “swing” package.

Worst of all is Jordan literally has his own signature Triple threat dribble sig (#4) which he comes with out the box in 2K21. Yet in 2K22 they give him the generic #5 as standard. WTF.
All this and more is why I sent the game back.

I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind it, I'm sure some stuff slips through the net, but it simply happens TOO much for it to be mere chance.

All they have to do is get the legends right, 100%, ONCE. Just ONCE. Tendencies, Sigs, attire - then they can simply copy paste EVERY year across so long as the game engine doesn't change anything. These are old teams and old players that don't need updating every week as the current day stars do. I simply don't understand how it's so hard for them to plug it all in ONE TIME, and then carry it over from then on out.

    Mess.

It impacts plays available for that player in the play call screen and the OTFC menus in game. You can do a global edit and move all player roll vs pop tendencies up 3 points and then down 2 point. That all players will be between 1 and 98.

Dave, they don't even get current players 100% right, so I don't expect them to do it for classic players. If you want it to be as close to real life as possible, you will ALWAYS have to edit players on your own and work with what they give you.

One year they might get players to look right but mess up the signature style, the next year they would get the signature right but mess up the looks. It will never be just right, that's why you have to work with what you have. But if you enjoy older versions more, definitely go with that.

That's great. You just need to give him a white forearm band and a black (non-Jordan) knee pad since he didn't wear a calf sleeve back then.

I always do a MyLeague with 36 of the classic teams. I get one team from each franchise with two versions of the Lakers/Celtics/Bulls. I'm not a huge retro NBA head but I always enjoy playing with the old players. I hate those 2K shoes so I edit most players to the Nike Hyperdunk shoes and give the legends their signature shoe if it's in game. I was surprised to see so many new players added. Speedy Claxtons CAP isnt accurate at all but I like that 2K at least threw something together. I'd never even heard of Mike Penberthy, and I was a virulent Laker ***** (the Bibby/Webber Kings made me a true NBA fan) at the time. The players are 2K CAPs but I think it's cool that 2K added so many low tier players that even the MyTeam folks couldn't care for in the game. I'm having a blast on my PS4 solely because of the classic teams.

To be fair this was probably a move in the right direction. Pretty sure I used to always give him Ben Simmons though so I could nail that baby running hook move.

Interesting. Would you say Gervin isn’t accurate to him?

Magic has way too much flair for the standard swing package I think. Simmons sounds pretty spot on actually. Definitely open to suggestions as to what you guys think is the best layup package for Magic.

I don’t really know how to answer why other than just to say Magic wasn’t doing Gervin layups.

Magic himself was a flashy player, but his layup and dunk package was pretty damn basic. A career highlight reel might show a handful of plays that would suggest otherwise, but his game to game stuff felt pretty “generic” for lack of a better word. His flash came into play more so with how he set it up, fake the pass, some crazy gathers, etc, than it did the layup itself.

This single game reel features lots around the basket for him (along with atrocious defense lol) and though a few of the plays are finished with somewhat of an under-hand finger roll (if you could call it that) type of finish they were all basically the same under hand stuff you see from the other 99% of the league. Not the elaborate over-exaggerated stuff Gervin used to pull. Also Magic plays substantially lower to the ground, he’s not taking off and hanging around in the air like that.

In the past I used Ben Simmons because his layups felt similar and I could pull off the baby hook Magic routinely went to. I’ve heard that package is horrible in terms of timing, but in the past I always turned off layup timing. Not sure if that’s an option in this game or if they fixed how awful it was to time in previous games.

Yeah true. Magic’s scoring style was pretty cookie cutter. I can understand why they gave him a flashier layup package though. A game is hard to capture his general flair, so giving him a jazzier layup package can kind of add that charisma.

It’s crazy to see him execute some of those plays, remembering he’s a whole 6’9. He clearly was a little heavier at that time. 80’s Magic was especially like poetry in motion.

80’s Magic went to that little hook motion more frequently as well, part of the reason I prefer that package.

Occasionally wouldn’t be a big deal, I just personally couldn’t take him doing the real elaborate gliding finger role move 4-5 times a game. Killed the realism for me.

If you wanted to try and add more flair though maybe Kyrie’s package would suit him more. Some of them would be over the top, but the ball would have lots of movement with lower more grounded finishes. Might be worth at least trying it in shoot around. If you didn’t do the up&unders so much it could be solid.

I personally just feel like Gervin’s package defaults to the same layup too frequently, and it doesn’t really fit Magic to me.
