Re: NBA 2K18 AI Improvements Blog From Scott O’Gallagher

The blog was amazing, but I have a couple questions:

A screenshot in the blog shows Golden State's preferred offensive system as "Balanced." I'm no expert on advanced offensive sets, but wouldn't the Warriors theoretically want to run a more spaced-out system to take advantage of their elite shooting?

Also, will the AI change the system when, for example, Shaun Livingston comes in? Most guards in the NBA can spot up from the three-point line, but Livingston can't, so IRL, he tends to migrate towards the mid-range area off the ball like a big man. If you have Shaun Livingston spotting up from the three-point line, he's such a bad long-range shooter that he can be totally ignored by the defense (but unlike someone like Andre Roberson, Livingston is a great mid-range shooter, so the defense has to respect him spotting up from 15-18 feet).

Idk man - i feel like every year i get excited and every year it doesn't live up to the hype of what's shown. So i'll just sit back and hope for the best.

I can't get excited with 2k anymore - until i get my hands on it and play it for a few months - hoping they don't ruin the launch experience etc.

Here's hoping everything mentioned works as intended and is consistent.

For the most part if you can atleast reduce the massive grind in MC which was just ridiculous in 2k17 - absolutely hated it.

I'm fine with that atleast - i can't go without a basketball game. I would have played 2k17 more if that atleast wasn't as bad as it was. But it did have more issues that eventually just made me put down the game for good.

I haven't enjoyed a 2k a lot in quite a long time - hopefully this year that changes. But last year i had the same hopes. I rather not get excited - being disappointed sucks much more when you get excited.

We had Kerr as "Pace and Space" prior to speaking with the coaches around the league. Balanced is what we were told, so that's what we went with. Scott Brooks was another interesting one. We had him as perimeter Centric type of coach, he's Post Centric.

              still true.
Really wish someday we could get difficulty broken out into two separate settings-- one for the level of AI intelligence and complexity, and another for adjustments (read: shenanigans to make the game more/less challenging.

From what i remember, Czar said the first patch will be the best version of the game to this point...my question is will we see ALL these improvements in the PRELUDE? and should we bother playing the disc pre patch? will it be THAT noticeable?

                        Hey Scott,

Great blog! I can't wait to play around with all of the new features.

One thing I feel like we really struggled with last year was discovering how the defensive settings work. It looks like you guys made strides to correct that with the new menu with diagrams and more in-depth descriptions which I really appreciate.

However, I think this will only take us so far when trying to optimize our defensive gameplans. One thing that I thought we were really missing last year that could have helped was to have all of the defensive settings available in the Scrimmage mode, where we don't have to worry about timeouts, shot clocks, etc.

Any chance that made it in this year?

Apologies, haven't read the whole thread yet, but will we see advanced defensive rotations on the perimeter? Defenses playing on a string, players zoning and splitting shooters? Or will they just stay attached to their man?

                          There's a couple examples here: 2:45 and 3:45.

                          Good stuff OG!

Scott Og,  My question is  will the ACE engine be able to work with whatever defensive settings I apply instead of it working against it,

That comment is what I love about 2k. You guys get the fact that there is a link between video game basketball and actual basketball. The NBA is ever evolving, High school, College, AAU, the game is a living breathing organism and so is this game!

With that said, I have one question, great offense will always beat great defense, so when can we get some information on how offensive movement will counter these defensive adjustments?

For example when you have early rotation to cover a slip, or roll release the player you rotate off should recognize and replace or lift to an open spot. In all of the videos (albeit they were very short) I saw statues hanging on the weak side. The key to success in the PNR is very rarely a direct pass from ball handler to roll man, instead its about using the PNR to start the chain that leads to good basketball.

I would love to be able to play that chess game with the great 2k defenders I run into online in the SIM community. Dczar, OG, yall got anything for me on this?
