Contrary to a lot of people, I'm really not enjoying the game so far this year. And I have been a huge, huge 2K fan and supporter for years now. Granted, I have been playing on a mediocre TV mounted on a hotel room wall, so I should wait and reserve full judgement until I'm home with my nicer TV and everything.
Gameplay wise though, there are some issues in my opinion. I like how they've obviously put much more emphasis on defense, but starting on HOF (which I've always needed to play on for the challenge) and then customizing sliders, CPU defense still feels too overpowered to me. I'm fine if a really good defensive team is giving me trouble, but even teams like the Kings are suffocating at times. I know I need more time with the game and my home setup to improve, but it still shouldn't be like this I don't think. The CPU guard defenders play on ball "smother" on like every guard. That isn't realistic. NBA defenders are serious, and they do guard on the perimeter with effort a lot, but not like this. There is a guy in your grill constantly. CPU defenders in general are too adept at poking the ball loose, even guys who aren't great at stealing IRL. They are just too aware, even the poor ones. Human ballhandling isn't good enough also.
I haven't played a lot, but I still haven't seen a charge taken by an AI player or even attempted to take (legacy problem), a defensive three seconds (legacy problem), an offensive three seconds, an alley oop by the CPU (another legacy problem), or a timeout taken by the CPU. I know the lack of timeouts by the CPU has been talked about. I'm sure it's a result of them getting rid of the auto timeouts the CPU called in 2K17, they were hard coded at certain times it seemed, as well as the double timeout issue when they would call one right after the user. Really glad they got rid of those specific problems, but now there aren't enough timeouts. Granted, I've been mostly losing, so if I was in control of more games I'm sure I'd see the CPU call a couple more TO's. Still aren't enough though.
They also made a change to the Broadcast Zoom camera I really don't like, now when you're dribbling the ball up the court it zooms way out to let you see down the court. I get the idea, so you can make full court passes easier, I just really don't like the zoom out. It's extreme. I know I'll enjoy the game more as I continue to play it, but there are definitely some things this year that don't feel as great to me as 17 which I loved continuously from day 1 until the end.
