From today....exactly what I predicted on page 5 (about letting shooters catch the ball on long passes) but please....tell me more about how these passes are just fine. *eyeroll*

Except my pass up court to a wide open Kawhi goes directly out of bounds because.....'long pass' I guess?

I hate stories like that....bad gameplay letting cheesers off the hook grind my gears....still, a reminder:

1. "Hit ahead passes when no defender is there? FINE. I've got zero issue with a good passer making that play."

2. "Long passes In the correct situation is the operative term...i've never had a problem there."

3. "I'm not advocating not being able to make long passes."

Sure, but I look at that play as a symptom of simply adding the logic of 'making long passes more difficult' instead of addressing the actual issue of why most of them are completing...

just like as I recently pointed out in another thread...'auto fouls' came about because of the complaint- 'there aren't enough fouls'...and here we are...

I think we both agree good ideas can have bad implementation tho. Dunks were too easy in 2K17...no one would make a "take out dunks" argument....we'd suggest tuning it so dunks in traffic are less and they can be blocked better. Just like no one wants dribble penetration gone....we just want it balanced better with stuff like charges, being redirected, poke-aways and loose ball collisions.

Its not just the big tho, man...(even though Embiid should be facing the ball on his goal-tend) look at Cov on the play when AD is running buck naked down the middle of the floor, or McConnell on the long pass to Cousins, look at KAT on the play where I throw it to McConnell up the sideline....you're telling me the other defenders with their backs to the ball isn't unacceptable?

On the McConnell play you're saying the other defenders don't see that full-court heave and are gonna give me an open shot just because the user blew the defense with Tyus Jones?

That's just not how help defense works or reacts...not at all. Scary part? Sixers defense is a 91. Cov's pass perception is an 87, Ben's is an 85, McConnell's is an 80.

Those guys should be facing the ball and ready to react. Transition Defense is a team thing.

Guys sitting and watching instead of reacting is VERY BAD.

I've read each post and this one here convinced me that this is more about defensive reactions to long passes from the inbound / transition.

I'm with your avocation to to improve the urgency and alertness logic so defenders are more commonly alert to threats in transition - at least from a common sense logic. I'm not advocating for everyone to lockup in transition at a rate that overmatches their sense of urgency and alertness in the League.

I'm not advocating for everyone to lockup in transition at a rate that overmatches their sense of urgency and alertness in the League.

That's fair, because in truth we're not asking for every play to be a steal. I'm of the opinion most would be deflections out of bounds like the plays below. Either way, them breaking towards the ball prevents foolishness like that end-of-quarter Lowry three.

I guess I don't agree with what your saying. Long passes are part of basketball. Especially the good passers.

Last 2 years I've fought for what passing is right now.

You can't go just throwing passes now like in years before. If a defender is in the area of a long (any pass for that matter). The offensive player will fumble the ball. Another nice addition they added was the CPU has a passing vision thing (think madden passing vision). All defenders not looking at the ball will lose track of it.

All these passes look legit in my opinion. People are trying to bring this game down to a half court game all the time. But basketball is more than that. You should be able to throw long passes with good passers.

Not only that but we arent asking for steals youre right.

But at least set the defense up in a manner that makes the player wants to pass to (GASP) the PG or whoevers back there not some cheesy hail mary that our players dont see or react to quick enough.

Can you at least see what happen there? There ball was going out of bounds. Because it was a bad pass. But your defender tipped it back into play.

Everything about that sequence was bad.

After the made bucket every defender should be retreating with eyes on the ball and their man. They should position themselves relative to their man to make a long pass into the paint nearly impossible to complete in this situation while also being a deterrent the long pass attempt up the sideline.

The pass itself was inexplicably errant, with the intended recipient of the pass being able to react to it without having clear vision of it. The defender in the paint should have got a clean go the other way "pick 6" animation sequence, but instead the ball just bounces off of his body because his hands never come up. The offensive player then gets a turbo boost to ball and recovers it.

The long pass spam is a byproduct of the core problems with the ball-you-man logic of defenders. They need to be programmed to be much quicker with establishing visual-spacial awareness of the ball and man, especially after made buckets. Turnovers and bad misses, should be more chaotic though, allowing for some throw ahead baskets.

That play was ghastly.

Jeebs, cmon bro....you can't seriously be rationalizing that mess. This play is indefensible and speaks to the issues of defenders having ZERO AWARENESS.

The ball is thrown right at the defenders and NOT ONLY are they clueless regarding reacting to it...but also catching or simply picking up the loose ball. The play itself is a microcosm of everything that is wrong in transition defense.
