Defense defense defense. Really bad, scoring against the CPU was no challenge. If you want to score one on one, you can just blow by people, if you want to score off the pick and roll, CPU can't defend it, transition defense is also a mess. I want challenge playing offline, when I recently tried both 2k11 and 2k14, it was there, it wasn't easy, 2k18 was just really easy.

Overdribbling into traffic would usually knock the ball loose instead of letting it harmlessly ghost through defenders' limbs/bodies like you see all the time in 18. Blow bys and standing contact dunk animations thankfully did not exist yet.

Contested shots usually missed in 17, as pure sharps couldn't consistently green smothered/heavily contested looks last year.

The dribbling controls were a lot more fluid and responsive in 17, with no walking sizeups or automated hand-switching animations unintentionally interrupting your combos.

Post scorers were dominant forces in 17 that required double teams or one really good lockdown defender to stop.

Adding height and/or weight would noticeably slow down your player in 17, creating a larger speed gap, and offering a more realistic trade-off for using smaller/lighter MyPlayers over taller/heavier builds.

The max height for speed boosting playmakers was the much easier to defend 6'8", not the unguardable 6'10" demigods that 2K18 allows.

      With all that said:

      16 >>>>>>>>> 17 >>>>>>>>>> 18

The Pro Am/MyTeam/MyPark portions of the game have gotten progressively worse each year since 16.
      Standing dunks were on 17

        Worst 2k18 problems-

You have no control in fighting under or over screens.
Contested shots drop more then open shots
The big man refuse to rebound
You can't manually fight for position for rebounds
The rebounds fly damn near to the free throw line
        The ai never turbo
        Blowby and snatchbck bums
        There's no layup meter
        Missing green lights
I can hit 90 percent of my ft with deandre jordan but miss half with Ewing and melo
        Dribbling through bodies
Easy chest passes get dropped by receiver while you can do a 360 pass out of a shot perfectly
Certain shots have higher percentages than other (Marcus smart, Klay Thompson)
        Myplayer is dumb
The mygm story arc is annoying
The wide open dunks take forever and makes you get blocked
You lose stamina for the ball handler running full speed into you.

Myteam is just a waste of time the 2k15 format was best
Classic , current, throwback , and instead of improved just make dynamic cards like 16.
All these premium collections are dumb
Too many duplicate players with different ratings
Only premium collection should be throwback all stars and current all stars with pd winners of events.
          The pack percentages suck bad
The auction house is a waste since everyone uses the same 20 cards
          The ratings make zero sense
Why can't you upgrade how ever many badges you want
There needs to be incentive to playing with lower rated team
There needs to be unranked search for myteam and ranked needs traditional courts.
          Allow card trading
          They need historic coaches

I still play it and feel it is the best one of this generation personally.

But seeing as we're this close to 2K19, the fear of reading a "game breaker" is now low for me haha - keen to hear what were the major gripes of the game for everyone.

I'll post mine later - but as stated, I still play it and I still enjoy it overall.

I quit playing for the most part because its baseball season now, and Im into OOTP baseball.

However the main reasons I havent continued playing much is because of the lack of fouls on 3pt attempts, and some of the sim stats not being realistic, such as PIP, being probably the hardest one for me to overlook. Plus the CPU timeouts being broken, with the CPU hardly ever calling timeouts, unless you use advance rotations, and then when you use advance rotations, they call them, but they dont manage foul trouble, The CPU as a whole does a poor job managing foul trouble, but its none existent when using advance rotations. Ive seen the CPU have a player foul out before halftime before.

NBA2k18 overall is a solid game, but its those things I mentioned that are the main reason why I have a hard time playing it. Usually once baseball season starts, I dont play quite as much NBA2k, but due to those issues is why I could count on 1 hand how many times I have played it probably since baseball season started.

I thought when Sonicmage put out his roster, where he tried to fix the sim stats issues, and improve the gameplay that the devs should have got right, right out of the box, that I would dive right in finally start a MyLeague, but it was no use. Just too many issues for me to be able to enjoy it.

Re: Why did you stop playing NBA 2K18?

For me it was just that the suspension of disbelief is gone. I've played 2K since 2006 or something, and i'm way too familiar with the animations: the way the ball snaps in and out of player hands when they pass it, the way they run, the way the camera follows the line of path of the ball on replays, the way the light reflects off players, the way a player hand glues to the ball as he dribbles. Know what i mean? It's all too familiar and artificial to me. I struggle to be able to play it as a basketball sim. It just feels like same old 2K videogame every year with some tweaks, and 2K18 was sorta the last straw. Throw in the microtransaction greed and the out-of-the-box MyLeague bugs that made me have to wait MONTHS to be able to play it properly and i just got super disenchanted.

I think I need a new graphics engine or something to be able to enjoy it again, i don't know. That's not gonna happen though because the 2K show must go on. They're a big business now and revamping things is just not on their agenda. I just gotta hope EA can step up. I need something fresh.

Re: Why did you stop playing NBA 2K18?

Because 2k thought it'd be a brilliant idea to make athletic wing players gods compared to legendary inside big men. It infuriated me that big men were much more productive as a viable 2nd option just catching open 3's off the drive of a SF or SG as oposed to working down low ad being dominant forces.

The common denominator of guys winning against me at this point are to just picking a team with a dominant SG or SF like Jordan, Melo, Harden, Kobe, Durant, and just turbo their way to the basket hoping 2k bails them out (which they do). I haven't gotten destroyed ALL YEAR LONG buy Shaq, Duncan, Kareem, Hakeem, or Wilt.

Doesn't take much skill to turbo zig zag with a 6'6-6'9 athletic SF and just terrorize the auto dunk/hip ride/shooting foul animations in this game.

The silver lining in all of this? 2k19 looks to have fixed almost ALL of the problems I mentioned, and I'm eternally grateful.

I kind of view 2k17 & 18 on the same level.

Both of which I played for around a couple of days, and promptly returned to the store to trade in. For everything they add every year, they always seem to take away more - there were simply too many things from 2k16 that I loved, that were removed or had simply vanished from the game in its last two iterations.

Stayed with 2k16 and never looked back.

I'll take 2k18 over 2k17, 2k16, 2k15's gameplay, but that's not saying plenty of improvement can't be had.

Re: Why did you stop playing NBA 2K18?

I‘ve stopped playing 2k18 for good around April but I have played it only a few times occasionally before anyways. I‘m usually a MyLeague and MyCareer player but ML was just getting boring to me after a few games into the season. MyCareer on the other hand I had fun with at first but it just annoyed the hell out of me that everything costs VC and you get so little playing only one mode. Not to mention a cut scene or waiting time whenever you walk into a store or your apartment. I just wanted to play a few games with the little time I have for playing in general.

I guess this game just wasn‘t/isn‘t for me anymore and I doubt this will change in this generation. I‘m looking forward to next gen though and hope 2k can get me back on the horse then.

2k17 was much more flawed than 18 imo. In 2k17 I could get limitless range on my pure playmaker and green 40 foot 3's consistently. Shooting in general in that game was far too easy. Let us not forget how BROKEN brick wall was in 2k17 also. Guys would consistently just fall down on picks.

To me 2k18 is by far the best 2k basketball game ever. Before that ever year you had brick wall defenders and I never had a issue with the defensive side of the ball in 2k18. I skipped 17 but I think it was like 16 where defense was much worse. That year defense felt completely broken. Was way to easy to get into the paint and guys would either not rotate when they should or would over rotate all the time. The clipping in 2k18 was bad but the over all game was so much better and the way guys move looked and felt so much better.

I stopped playing 2K17 early. That and 2K15 are easily the worst of this generation. Now 2K18 I’ve had dry spells but for the most part I still play it. It’s an overall good game with a terrible my career story and feel. Some of the gameplay makes it kinda repetitive but more times than not you play some games that feel good and are exciting to the end. So this release has me thinking 2K19 will be good.

You can steal ok in 2k if you do it right, esp in traffic, but someone has to press steal, you get close enough and knock it loose. Now, are you gonna end up with the ball... dunno.

I think 2k18 is no question better than 17. But I got 18 for 30 and had low expectations. The brick wall thing was a pretty big deal. I dunno if pure post gets silver posterizer, but two way post does, and that's a pretty good 1v1 build. But I'm one of those people who feels you see minimal impact by increasing your overall much over 80-85. Cept for shooting, which of course always is better to pump up. 99 post, dunno if it's necessary. Haven't seen it, got 91 on my 6 11, w/ hof badges (1 at least, haven't grinded the other two), and 81 (not even max) on my 7'3 340 two way. The two way is better at finishing, even with silver relentless, just from being bigger and being able to do crazy dunks.

I thought big men were wack until I made a two way post scorer. Basically, silver posterizer matters that much. But I also think pure archetypes get better animations, so maybe the 'post scoring' post scorer is good, but like I said if you can't dunk, you gotta finish all kinds of weird finesse moves.

17 was a bad game. 18 is mediocre.
