2k did it back then because Madden had such a foothold in the market that they HAD to do it to get noticed. That's literally the only reason. And Sutton is right, it only worked because NFL 2k was amazing. If it was trash, nobody would even remember it existed. There are a ton, an absolute TON, of F2P games out there none of you even heard of.
NBA 2k, FIFA and Madden have essentially no competition, thus they do not need to go F2P.
The video game market is NOT changing as much as some of you think it is. F2P titles are not going to become the norm. Just because Fortnite and Apex are F2P and huge hits doesn't mean that type of business model works for every game, for every company, on every platform.
You guys wishing for this honestly better hope they don't make our NBA, FIFA and NFL titles F2P, because if you think the grind and VC are bad now, hoooooo boy, you'll be in for quite the surprise.
