NBA 2K20 - OFFICIAL TRIANGLE SYSTEM THREAD

For anyone wondering, the new episode of Detail featuring Phil Jackson is streaming on ESPN+. I have paid $4.99 for 23 minutes of 22 yr old content lol. Wasn’t too bad but I’d recommend waiting until someone puts the full vid on YT for free. I would have chosen a much cleaner game to break down. Definitely not the same production without Kobe.

Coach Nick also came out with a video yesterday but again he should have chosen another game with more options executed. Also he mixes up terminology quite often. Example: several references to a guard quickie but team was actually run a completely different option of a completely different series. But I’m always grateful for content [emoji1474].

Of course. This is what Kobe was talking about in one of his last interviews. This isn’t an “accidental” offense. You know where you cutters are going to come from and you react to their dynamic reads. You also should use the advances passing controls and new quick actions to attack the defense with your cutters, especially on HOF.

Oh I miss understood. There are Princeton plays in game. Enough to add to a favorite plays at least. Princeton and Triangle both use a two guard front to start out so there are some actions that are similar like the Solo o Cut Series.

Taildog we are not worthy bro! This level of sim is what I absolutely love about 2k. I'm in an MLO and have been with the same guys since 2k9 and this is the type of robust sim experience we promote. I greatly appreciate what you're doing here man, this is awesome. I bet Da Czar is somewhere with a smile on his face.

Yo Taildog, I've been a quiet observer of your triangle posts since at least 18. Could you post your playbook? If you don't have one, could you post your favorite 50 for the modern NBA? I'm also really interested in your CAPs. At first, I was thinking about making a young Kobe and putting him in the modern NBA before following his career. But a fledgling 5-star triangle player sounds even better on the Kings under Luke Walton, or perhaps with the Knicks since they were the last full-on triangle team.

                            Hey Adeezus

                            (Long winded answer warning)

I’ve resisted just posting a screenshot of what I run currently because it changes season by season and team by team since I play MyGM. Even for the classic teams I don’t use identical playbooks. The personnel is different. For example with the classic Bulls I’m probably not running the same UCLA duckins or corner post entries like I do with the classic Lakers teams. And probably more screen and roll for the Big 4 team with Malone & Payton or open things up for the 09-10 teams that even ran zipper sets [video coming on this one]. Plus I still use positional playcalling so for my personal playbook I limit myself by making the amount of plays per play type divisible by 4 since that’s the max number of plays on each page in-game. In other words I’m not actually going into a game with the best 50 plays, I’m going in there with the best 4-12 plays per play type based on the personnel I have AND matchups I intend on exploiting.

For the “modern NBA” I assume you want to see more 3pt shots. You can run the same plays and just use the passing options to veer guys towards the 3pt line as they are coming off screens. Also one can get 3pt opportunities by just running freelance exclusively. Think about it. If you’re making passes fast enough*, every “No. 2” pass to the post, top, pinch post or corner gives us the chance to shoot a 3pter. After each of these passes there is some type of off ball screen action that gets daylight for a shooter or like in the case of the pass to the corner the automatic screen and roll lets you attack the basket with three shooters beyond the 3pt line waiting for the kick out if help comes. Remember BJ and Kerr each had seasons leading the league in 3pt percentage of these looks.

Lastly don’t forget about hotzones especially with this hotzone hunter badge this year. Run stuff that gets your specific players in those high percentage areas.

For the CAPs...this year is a little different since badges impact overall ratings. The main Kobe CAP I had in 2k19 was 79 overall with a 5-star rating out of the draft. Now that same cap is probably in the high 80s in 2K20. I’ll post attributes and tendencies for him later this weekend. You can try to create one using the ratings from the ‘96 draft class and increase his BBall IQ ratings (especially Defensive Consistency), plus the touches and post up tendencies.

*Timing of freelance initiation is different this year. Czar talked about things speeding up in one of the early streams around launch. I think people (non-sim heads) complained about offense taking too long to initiate last year while not realizing that they could just their various freelances by passing the ball to or from the initiation spots. I think these users were just standing around waiting for the freelance to start. Doing so limits the motion you get. You kinda get locked into options. Sometimes I liked to wait and scan the floor for mismatches arising out of crossmatches or switches in transition defense. So the fact that they sped this clock up in 2k20 is unfortunate but I understand why.

Maintenance is a beast on these classic team plays. That’s their main issue.

Why pressure releases and counters vs full court pressure or overplays in the half court are important...
