Re: NBA 2K20 Player Rating Edit Guide

can you take a Look at Brandon clarke? right now clarke is averaging 24 ppg and is shooting the Lights out as the go to scorer on the #1 Team in our online League. He is using clarke mainly as a klay Thomson style type of Player coming of screens but also attacking smaller or slower players in the paint. wondering if thats just a matter of volume and clarke can actually do All those things or if 2k just again rated a Player wrong.

        Shooting Data vs 2K Ratings
        Rim: 153-195 (78.5%) = 68 Layup / 80 D.Dunk / 80 S.Dunk
        Close: 78-151 (51.6%) = 95
        Mid: 2-8 (25.0%) = 88
        3pt: 21-52 (40.4%) = 83

Clarke's Close% and volume is unheard of for a rookie. He has mastery of a floater that he breaks out in the pick & roll and on the break when the defense has cut off his path to the rim.

Interestingly, Clarke doesn't post up AT ALL en route to his elite Close% (7 points on 10 possessions). So while that surely helps his Close%, he isn't one for creating his own shot (he's assisted on 84% of all his FGs). A true anomaly.

I don't really know what 2K is smoking giving Clarke an 88 Mid-Range. Clearly whoever is supposed to be double-checking the data fell asleep at the wheel. It is very clear from watching tape that Clarke isn't a shooter by trade.

69 Ball Handle is also pretty high for a guy who isn't creating his own shot off the dribble.

Defensively, while Clarke utilizes his athleticism to great effect, he is extremely undersized and not an effective post defender. He's best suited to being an energy backup, as his limitations would be magnified as a starter.

I would love to see how you would re rate Jayson Tatum. I have a custom roster from the roster sub forum & he’s putting up Giannis numbers in my Myleague 34/10/4 with a usage rating if 42%. When I use the 2k Roster he’s more of a 18ppg guy

Is it mine by chance? I have Tatum at an 85. I didn't follow 2K's trend of making overall player ratings higher. I'm still on the older scale, which works better in my opinion.

Tatum averaged 31-8-3 in February (Player of the Month). He hit a staggering 52 threes in 12 games (shooting 48%). He was trending upward all season, but that qualifies as an explosion.

2K surely knows Tatum trained with Kobe, right? He's logged 223 Post possessions in his career.

Tatum ranks 3rd in DRPM among Power Forwards, behind Giannis and Bam. He's the top defender on the NBA's 4th best defensive team.

I've given 99 Intangibles to Tatum which is something I don't take lightly. It's something I reserve for only Superstars. At age 21, Tatum is a better player than every wing in the league was at the same age.

                  Age 21 seasons
                  Tatum: 20.3 PER, 56 TS%, 29 USG%, All-Star
                  Giannis: 18.8 PER, 57 TS%, 22 USG%
                  George: 16.5 PER, 56 TS%, 19 USG%
                  Kawhi: 16.4 PER, 59 TS%, 16 USG%
                  DeRozan: 14.5 PER, 53 TS%, 23 USG%
                  Ingram: 13.4 PER, 56 TS%, 23 USG%
                  Middleton: 11.4 PER, 53 TS%, 16 USG%
                  Butler: Still in college

He's ahead of where Kawhi and PG13 were at the same age, and those two are pretty fair barometers for what to expect out of Tatum the next 5-10 years.

Tatum averaged 31-8-3 in February (Player of the Month). He hit a staggering 52 threes in 12 games (shooting 48%). He was trending upward all season, but that qualifies as an explosion.

I don't agree with their new rating system. I kept mine more similar to previous years. Not quite as generous with overalls but still making a lot of sense. Check my roster out if you haven't already.

2K's attribute formulas haven't really changed in the last 5 years. The only key change this year is Badges affecting OVR (which is a very welcome improvement).

                              Shooting Stats
                              Rim: 279-448 (62.3%)
Close: 31-157 (19.7%) - This is unspeakably bad
                              Mid: 45-111 (40.5%)
                              3pt: 184-484 (38.0%)

Scoring from 3-15 Feet is a major hole in LaVine's game (the average starting SG shoots about 40%). He doesn't have a tear drop or runner. If he can't get all the way to the rim he's hoping to get bailed out by a foul. Last year LaVine shot 61-220 (27.2%) from Close, so this isn't an aberration either.

The good news is he's only 24 years old. If his efficiency (and/or shot selection) improved even modestly, he'd be an All-Star without question.

                              DEFENSE
                              60 Defensive Rebound (NC)
                              55 Interior Defense (+6)
                              75 Perimeter Defense (+10)

                              70 Reaction Time (NC)

This has quietly been LaVine's best defensive season. The Bulls rank 14th defensively, after ranking 25th last year. Say what you will about coach Jim Boylen's methods, but he's getting the most he can out of his team's best player.

                              Harden: 28.4 PER, 62 TS%, 36 USG% (West All-Star)
                              Kawhi: 26.7 PER, 59 TS%, 33 USG% (West All-Star)
                              Beal: 23.1 PER, 58 TS%, 34 USG%
                              Booker: 19.8 PER, 62 TS%, 30 USG% (West All-Star)
                              LaVine: 19.5 PER, 57 TS%, 32 USG%
                              Mitchell: 19.1 PER, 56 TS%, 31 USG% (West All-Star)
                              Lowry: 17.9 PER, 59 TS%, 23 USG% (East All-Star)
                              Holiday: 17.5 PER, 54 TS%, 25 USG%
                              McCollum: 17.4 PER, 54 TS%, 27 USG%
                              J.Brown: 17.1 PER, 59 TS%, 25 USG%

LaVine is right there with Booker and Mitchell (Beal has a legit gripe about being snubbed from the All-Star game, though that's a separate issue). LaVine should be locked in as a top 3 SG in the east for the foreseeable future.

^Not a fan of how 2K implemented these Association subtypes like "Media Ringmaster" and "Warm Weather Fan". LaVine has played in Minnesota and Chicago. He re-signed with Chicago for 4 years, indicating weather wasn't a major factor for him.
