Re: NBA 2K20 Player Rating Edit Guide

Your work is amazing, and much appreciated my man! I'm working on cleaning up/polishing players/teams as we speak... My work is focused more on rotations/signature moves/tendencies and shoes. Starting with the 19-20 roster, the plan is to also do this with the classic rosters + adding/removing players. Want to actually have the best 15 guys for each franchise...

Long story short, do you plan on doing this with all current rosters? Already added your Bucks work and really think we can collab to make a very realistic roster.

I'll be back frequently dude. Love your work so far!

Great work as many other years. I have a question. In your roster, did you fix tendencies also or just ratings? Thanks.

Can we get a Lebron, AD and Brandon Ingram breakdown?

Will be implementing these in a new MyLeague. Can I get one for Steph? He always seems to average ~7 rebounds and 8+ assists per game in sims.

Just to clarify... this year Curry's per36 averages were 27-7-9

Thank you for this Rashidi, after a long road I've finally found my holy grail for 2k20. I cant even describe the things I'm seeing other than to say I've picked my jaw up @ least 4 times already in one game. Outstanding job.

By popular demand.... the 2020 New York Knicks

My favorite aspect of this deep dive is that it illustrated what the organization is doing wrong, from top to bottom. Players, coaches, GM, it's all in the data. Especially when we compare them against a team like the Bucks (my previous full edit), who have done everything right.

                    STARTERS
83 (+1) Julius Randle (PF): Interior Force

                    78 (+1) Maurice Harkless (SF/PF): Slasher
                    77 (+1) R.J. Barrett (SG/SF): Offense Initiator
                    77 (-1) Taj Gibson (C): 2-Way Mid-Range Finisher

                      Julius Randle

It is evident from briefly watching Randle that he lives off his fadeaway. Back to the basket, or step back off the dribble, it makes little difference. Randle only hit 20 hook shots this year, and 26 last year. 2K has his post game completely backwards.

While athletic for his size, Randle lacks explosion. Contrary to what 2K would have you believe, there's simply no comparison between Randle and Giannis when it comes to finishing at the rim.

Unfortunately, Randle (64-231 3PT, 28%) isn't much better at shooting than Giannis either.
In fact, Giannis (83-271 3PT, 31%) likely passed him this year.

Randle boasts a high Iso rate, as he routinely takes defenders off the dribble. One might say you can't hold a candle to Randle's handle. Let's never speak of this again.

                      DEFENSE
                      86 Defensive Rebound (+1)
                      80 Interior Defense (+13)
                      70 Perimeter Defense (+17)

                      45 Block (-2)
                      60 Steal (+20)
                      70 Shot Contest (-1)
                      70 Reaction Time (-1)

Randle doesn't have the greatest awareness, and isn't athletic enough to be a shot blocker. His position defense is fine, mainly owing to his strength and quick feet.

                      ATHLETICISM
                      65 Lateral Quickness (-2)
                      75 Speed (+2)
                      75 Ball Speed (+7)

                      85 Strength (-2)
                      95 Stamina (+10)
                      85 Hustle (NC)
                      85 Durability (NC)

                      MENTAL
                      60 Pass Perception (+8)
                      65 Offensive Consistency (-20)
                      75 Defensive Consistency (+15)
                      75 PNR Defense (+6)
                      60 Help Defense (-9)
                      80 Intangibles (-15)
                      85 Potential (+2)

Consistency. Alas. Randle has games where he looks like an unstoppable force. He has just as many games where he decimates his own team with turnovers and erratic shooting.

After stumbling this season in a lead role, his upside is far less certain. He seems destined to merely be a good scorer on a bad team, as his value is in shot creation and he lacks complimentary skills. His best years came as a sixth man off the bench, and that's probably his long-term future on a more competitive team. Can he improve his shooting and playmaking the way Blake Griffin did as his athleticism waned?

In 2019 Payton recorded 5 consecutive triple doubles - a feat only accomplished by Jordan, Oscar, Wilt, and Westbrook. He's obviously nowhere close to those players as a scorer, yet his playmaking and all-around game should not be doubted. He shares many of the same traits as a young Rajon Rondo (for better and worse).

Only 25 years old, there’s still some upside here. Make no mistake, he's a starting PG (and sadly, one of the best the Knicks have had the last decade). From a talent perspective, his 8M team option is a steal. He simply doesn't fit long-term in a backcourt with Barrett. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Knicks pick up the option and then figure out a trade later.

(As an aside, is it fair to call Ben Simmons a rich man's Elfrid Payton?)

                          Maurice Harkless
                          Position: SF/PF
                          H/W/A: 6’7” / 220 lbs / 26 years
                          Archetype: Slasher (from 3pt Specialist)
                          78 Overall (+6)

Harkless holds the title of most underrated Knick and it isn't even close. A starter the last four years, 2K somehow has Harkless rated lower than Kevin Knox.

^Don’t be fooled by this one. Harkless shot 2-18 in his other 11 games with the Knicks.

Harkless has a post game, even if he didn't show it much this year.

His reduced touches were clearly due to playing w/ Kawhi on the Clippers.

Defensively, Harkless has a solid rep. He's a bit too foul prone for me to consider him a "stopper". He's a step below the Kawhi Leonard's and Paul George's of the world - unlikely to ever make an All-Defensive team. Despite that, he's vastly better than any other wing on the NY roster.

Would anyone be interested in me doing one of these for my roster on Xbox? My overalls are definitely lower.

All credit goes to Rashidi for the idea and getting everyone engaged on this.

Barrett wasn't an efficient scorer in college, and that came to a head in the pros. As was the case at Duke, the spacing around him was terrible, leading to difficult shots.

IMO the decision to start Barrett irrespective of results was a big mistake and one the organization needs to learn from. They took a similar approach with Kevin Knox last season, and it failed miserably.

Barrett and Randle are not going to be able to play together. They're natural slashers and neither one stretches the floor for the other. The Knicks have FIVE shooting guards and Barrett is easily the worst shooter of the bunch. If Randle is the veteran and team leader (i.e. you can't bring him off the bench), then they should have used Barrett as a sixth man.

A good parallel to this is Donte DiVincenzo in Milwaukee. A natural slasher, DDV is a better overall player than Wesley Matthews. Matthews starts because his outside shooting compliments Giannis and Bledsoe better. As a result, DDV has more freedom in the 2nd unit. He's put in a position to succeed. The Bulls likewise did this with Coby White, rather than playing he and Zach LaVine together.

Despite Barrett's inefficiency, even briefly watching him one can tell he has tools at his disposal most 19-year olds only dream of. Body control is impeccable and has nowhere to go but up over the next 10 years.

James Harden was likewise a #3 overall pick (notably, a sixth man for three years), and there are a lot of similarities between the two. Yet Harden was ALWAYS a good shooter (dating back to college), and that's the facet of his game that makes him unguardable. There aren't exactly many 61% FT shooters that become career 86% shooters.

2K does a pretty poor job w/ their post ratings. Gibson's always been a hook shot guy. His jumpers (90% assisted) are of the catch & shoot variety.

The primary reason Gibson started this year was to keep Mitchell Robinson out of foul woes. He's a NY native and his leadership is an important part of the locker room. However, with a 10M option for a 16 MPG role, the Knicks can afford to renegotiate here.
