Pet project of mine is converting the 95 Knicks to the 1994 Knicks, Aside from making the NBA Finals, they were the first basketball team I ever watched, and their journey made me fall in love with basketball.

Can you do the 93, 96 Bulls and convert the 2004 Lakers to the 2009 or 2010 Lakers?

When Kobe passed I was shocked to find those teams weren't already in the game.

I can only presume they didn't have enough player rights.

2009: Kobe, Gasol, Fisher, Ariza, Luke Walton
2010: No Ariza

I expect 2K will pull out all the stops to make it happen next year, though that will be complicated by Bryant's estate since he passed.

Given his passing, I can see most players allowing their rights if pressed. Similar to Barkley allowing his likeness for the Dream Team - some things are bigger than $.

This is also dependent on whether 2K has enough time to include a "Kobe mode", as they would surely prefer to roll that out as a major feature, not just add the team to the game and then utilize it the following year.

Their team choices are weird like why not the 2000 Lakers instead of the 98 Lakers? They have the 2000 Raptors instead of the 2001 Raptors. Why not the 99 Spurs instead of the 98 Spurs?

It's important to remember the original Classic teams were chosen as a gameplay feature. I also doubt that 2K thought at the time that these assets would be in use for as long as they have been. MyTeam came in 2K13 and blew the lid off everything.

The 98 Lakers were an opponent for the 98 Jazz (unlocking John Stockton). Shaq and Kobe were still active players, there was nobody to unlock.

There was also demand for a younger Kobe model specifically because of his fro hairstyle.

The 98 team is hardly without merit either. They won 61 games and had FOUR All-Stars.
The 2001 team is close enough to the 2000 team (and if anything, they're the team I would convert).

Why not the 99 Spurs instead of the 98 Spurs?

As with the prior example, the 98 Spurs were the opponent for the 98 Jazz required to unlock Karl Malone.

2K has shown no interest in updating because these teams don't generate any money for the game. The demand for it is extremely limited - even if it's on their to-do-list, it's justifiably at the back of the queue.

They have the 2000 Raptors instead of the 2001 Raptors.

Tracy McGrady wasn't with the Raptors in 2001, which is the primary appeal of the team (even if the 01 team had slightly more success).

This team was a largely a community contribution as it was pointed out that various veterans made the 2000 team relatively "free" from a rights standpoint. Namely, Dee Brown, Kevin Willis, and Muggsy Bogues.

Conversely, the 2001 team has none of those players and 2K doesn't have the rights to Chris Childs (2001's starting PG). Morris Peterson, Jerome Williams, and Keon Clark are other key missing assets.

In a perfect world, we could have both. However, at some point it just becomes congestion as the differences are minor for the vast majority of fans.

Worth noting that as one of the best and most popular teams in NBA history this is a team that 2K should have reasonably accurate to begin with.

If I continued working on this team I would find a way to make Rodman worse and Kukoc better. Maybe 86 Rodman / 84 Kukoc.

Kukoc in 20 starts: 18-5-5 (35 mpg) on 53-45-74. HE WAS FREAKIN GOOD.

Random observation while perusing All-Time teams


For whatever reason 2K has had Henry Bibby on the All-Time Sixers squad since it's inception. Bibby spent four years w/ the team and never made an All-Star game. He wasn't even an average player by the time he played for PHI.

Jrue Holiday spent exactly as much time with the Sixers and DID make an All-Star team. He isn't on the team.

And he shoots constantly 3 points, his tendency mist be lowered. Actually he takes a couple of long distance shoot.
