re: NBA 2K21 Last Gen Impressions

Personally I think that this game isn't designed towards players who like to play offline MyLeague with mediocre teams.

This year I chose OKC and I'm astonished at the games that I had recently. I don't where the people complaining about green shots come from (park probably) but from my experience, the shooting has been nerfed even further for the players that don't have A+ on midrange and 3pointers. During a couple of matches (played on All-Star/Superstar) I have been able to shoot maybe 3 or 4 three-pointers TOTAL! To anticipate incoming comments - I was trying to shoot only from red zones, only being 100% open, only with players that have at least B+ 3pt ability. The only shots that went in were the green ones. Any minimal error with the shot meter ended with the total brick. I mean c'mon, I understand that the game is supposed to be hard, but these are professional basketball players, how come they cannot shoot?? I reckon that the shooting was nerfed because lots of players have overpowered shooting builds that ruin the game for everyone in the park, but the same mechanics are applied to mediocre players in offline modes, who look like chums playing a pickup game in the Paralympics!

      Got you!

I was not a fan of 2K20 personally. For the life of me I could not vibe with that game after a while.

I am still having a lot of fun with 2K21. I mean we are past the honeymoon phase right? Lol

Gameplay would be the biggest selling point. If you are content with 2K20, might be the best move, especially if you plan on upgrading to next gen.

I think this is an unfortunate side effect of the way they decided to handle the "skill gap".

So the problem in the past was guys shooting at insanely high percentages.IMO instead of looking closely at some of the underlying issues which caused the previous meta (Certain jumper and dribble move animations clearly much better than others, magnetic screens, shot contesting system not always working right, badges being too effective, badges stacking ,etc.) and working to correct them, they instead implemented a mechanic that nearly requires an elite player simply to be effective. While this probably works in the park where many are on the level of all time great players, it falls a bit flat when applied to a more realistic scenario where there is a wide range of skill levels and skill sets which aren't optimized to "The 2K Meta" in play.

Now in all fairness, I'm not sure how things worked this dev cycle with the pandemic; this may not necessarily be what they really wanted to do, but rather what they could accomplish with what they had available. As it is though, this will certainly make me wary of any 2K product in the future.

The thing that bothers me I'm hearing the most. Is you can just run around defenders for easy points in the paint. Is that true? Or is it exaggerated.

Yeah pretty easy. Most games come down to a lot of easy layups back and forth. If your an offline player, cpu has quick recovery around screens and closes 3pt down with snappy speed.

As always, overhual on sliders/roster/tendency/coaches is needed.

The perimeter is definitely a lot more free than 2K20 which can be a good and bad good thing and the transition issues persist from the last couple of years. That's definitely true.

I don't know if people are actually beating the CPU on SS/HOF left and right as advertised...but I still find games to be challenging. Then again, when I play offline its usually one off Play Now games vs. classic/all time teams etc.

I’m waiting on next gen. From 2ks IG on their plays of the week the net physics look MUCH improved. This correct or did I not see it correctly?

That's weird, I haven't noticed any differences, which sucks because I've been wanting them to upgrade net and rim physics for a while now to make shooting feel more satisfying

The close out speed of the CPU needs to be nerfed I think (or the speed of a pass quickened). You get almost no reward for running a play which gets someone coming off an off-ball screen or finding an open man, because by the time the pass has been received, the CPU has somehow warped over to contest.

The only time I'm managing to get truly open shots is on the break.

Yea. Playing offline vs the cpu on default rosters is unrealistic right now, and not enjoyable. Every defender is able to warp into shot contests and turbo out to contest 3 point shots from the paint.

Layups or any jumpshot is the cpu defensive strategy. Also, i have not seen 1 jumpshot foul call against the cpu since the patch.

It’s reading stuff like this (and the shot stuff) that has allowed me to avoid buying current gen at the moment. Slider adjusted 2K20 is fun for me and I can wait until next gen and updates rosters.

What happened to the shooting? I mean for Christ sake. Playing with a mediocre team in my league you literally cannot make a shot unless it’s a complete green, while the CPU seemingly can make any shot they want.

There should be some give and take with this meter BS. If it’s only slightly early or slightly late, there’s no reason every shot should miss. It wasn’t like this at launch.

Facts. Doesn't help that the AI seems to have gained warp speed on closeouts, and everyone is the greatest perimeter defender in the world now.

While the AI can just run around your defense and make contested shot after contested shot. I'm getting some real 2K19 vibes where the AI just doesn't miss.

Meanwhile, if a defender sneezes near you, or you don't green every attempt, it's a miss. This game is messy as hell at the moment and I can't even be bothered lol
