I had some free time the other day and decided to reach out to 2K Support regarding missing shoes. I simply created a case and asked what goes into adding shoes in the game. To my surprise, someone responded. Here is the response I received from someone at 2K Support:

"Welcome to 2K Support and I am greatly pleased to see your curiosity and inclination towards the NBA 2K Series and it's interaction with the shoes!

Here's how it works and when you will think about it, it's rather simple and win-win for all the parties! So, we know that the players and teams are already officially sponsored by these shoe brands. So, we just comply and we get the CAD (computer aided design) from them of the real shoes, the ones they want their players to sport! What they get from us, is their promotion and our gamers options to make their builds/players look slick!

It's same in other game genre too, where the automotive brands, they allow the use of their 3D versions of the cars, gun makers offering the same. And it goes on. You are getting the drift, right?

Well, I will certainly do my part about the shoes which is missing in the NBA 2K21, and since the development team can't review suggestions sent through customer support, we've created the NBA 2K Forums to provide your feedback. Please share your insights there. This way, you can also talk about your feedback with others in our community, as well.

As the game is continuously updated, we can expect to see changes that will make it even more exciting. If you have any other questions, please let me know!"

If I read that correctly, it sounds like 2K waits on the shoe brands to send them the designs to get the shoes in the game. Maybe not a complete response that I might have been looking for, it was cool to get some explanation.

I went ahead and created a thread in the 2K Forum as he requested, so hopefully that helps. I'd encourage you all to do the same so it at least shows there is some interest in adding more shoes.

Which is what some of us have been saying for years, but some people just keep crying and whining about it and say, "No! We want this now!" or "2K should just buy the shoes themselves and put it in the game!". Clearly, they don't understand how some businesses work SMH.

Seriously! lol So know we can end this line of arguing. 2k doesnt even scan the shoes. They get a render from the shoe company.

Exactly. It's not as simple as getting the physical shoe and scanning it through a machine. I'm sure that could be part of it but there needs to be some permission on the shoe brands end if they want a particular model in the game.

- From the sound of it they wait on the shoe companies. So they do not apply pressure on our behalf to get the shoes? For example, if Adidas does not send us whatever it takes to get Harden vol. 5 in the game then they do not send it to us, tough luck, and that is that? Not like lets keep reaching out until they send it to us?

- That is 2k's side of the story. I wonder what the shoe companies have to say about this.

At the end of the day, it is Adidas' product and if they choose not to provide it to 2K then that's how it goes. I'm sure there's a lot that goes into these decisions. For instance, I'm sure adding the Dame 7 to the game before they were available to buy in real life was probably part of a larger marketing plan for Dame Lillard because he was the cover athlete. Like you said, I'd love to now hear from someone on the shoe brand side of things to find out how they view it. I've already started reaching out to some of them hoping to get a response of some kind.

The infamous air Max 90s worn by sefolosha that were never added and we (at least most of us) knew that wouldn’t, caused people to legit quit playing 2k which is hilarious to me lol.. it was never that serious

You know I've been thinking, literally this thread sums it up as well. But anybody chat with 2k and ask them why there isn't a shoe vault in the game? Creating them is huge and thankful for the editor all though it does need updated. We should be able to download customs

Not to sound negative at all, but colors also depend on what kind of screen/TV you're using. It could look right for the colors of a dude's TV/monitor, but could look totally different through your TV/monitor. Idea's great, execution would be 50/50.
