I don't see how anyone can merely plug in or begin using their new device without making changes to their device. In my eyes, there's no such thing as universal settings.
**had to add, I didn't really say what you're saying I said - I don't think things would be perfect out of the box and not to change anything, I'm saying if things are to your liking or calibrated correctly that it should work across the board - you should never had to change TV settings drastically from one game to the next on the same system

I think that's exactly how it SHOULD work. I'm in film/tv and shoot all the time. When I shoot, I record LOG format which is a flat profile which is then colour graded and finished. It's the same thing with HDR and games... you are either 'exporting' to a REC.709 standard colour/contrast space or wide gamut 2020 spec for example.

Those standards exist for a reason and that would mean that my export of an 90% exposed image would be 90% exposed on your calibrated monitor.

So if one games looks perfect (in my case NBA 2k21 did out of the box), other games should too as they are all working in the same defined limitations.

Sure you have room for personal preference as well as the rare 'outlier' (think the dark game of thrones episode), but overall a good image should translate time and time again using the same device. Different games shouldn't have to alter picture settings unless something weird is going on.

In this case, something weird IS going on between living rooms, but there shouldn't be a massive shift in image quality BETWEEN games in the same living room if they are both HDR 4k optimized games.

Oh no. I meant universal TV settings out of the box. No, I agree with you. If I tweak my settings for one game, than those settings should be "universal" for my other games. I might make some slight tweaks to the in-game settings, but TV settings are definitely set at the moment.

This just shows current gen and last gen is the same game just one with and without HDR . Graphically that is, gameplay looks the same too . Too bad you didn’t record this with a Series X , the Auto HDR would’ve made them identical 🤦🏿🤦🏿

You think the PS4 version looks the same as the PS5 version!? Fair enough.

All totally valid and fair. For some reason though some games do just struggle with HDR. Red Dead Redemption 2 I remember being weird and not looking quite right. The Resident Evil 2 Remake I felt was a little hard to find something that worked too. I don't know enough about any of this to quite know why, but we have seen some games in the past just not quite handle HDR right regardless of how well your actual TV and all that are calibrated.

yes I fired up RDD2 just last week on my OG ps4 and it looked terrible w/ HDR. I didn't even bother to read up on if OG's can do HDR or not, I just shut it off as I was essentially killing time waiting for the SX to show up.

I do remember that being an issue, and it seemed to be a problem universally?

With 2k21, people are reporting wildly different experiences depending on their TV's ... here I have to admit I don't know the process developers use to 'finish' and don't know how involved it is.

In video its incredibly simple using all the established software

                I have tried 3 methods

                HDR
                HDR to SDR
                and then non HDR

Non-HDR looked the best to me. 2K will need to have in game settings like other big games when it comes to HDR so people can play it accordingly

The ps5 version looks great but the solid jersey colours are a bit off for some reason. The reds really do look pinkish and the blacks are greyish (but only on the jerseys, not elsewhere)

Yeah that's been a 2K thing for as long as I can remember, at least on HD consoles.

I will say some of the skin tones and faces are so lifelike in replays it could fool you as a real game . The jerseys just need more pop themselves . Maybe the courts slightly as well.

Even on PS3/360. As a Chicago bulls fan it hurt to wear our away jerseys bc that def was not anything close to red lol

I’ve noticed that a lot of the comments like this are coming from people that haven’t played the next gen consoles and I was one of those people until I actually got one. The game feels and plays different. It has a lot of elements from current gen but IMO it’s a lot better especially graphically but that’s obvious. I was basing my opinion off YouTube videos which even in 4K don’t produce actual gameplay quality so once I got it I immediately said Idk why I was frontin like next gen isn’t 10 times better. Now I’ll say this, next gen does have major improvements to make which mainly refers to online and maybe some fixes offline they can make but other than that I’m happy with what we have. A lot better than current gen for me. Just waiting on this post draft roster to hit and MyNBA is gonna be so lit lol. In regards to the topic itself about HDR, I turned my off immediately as it makes a lot of colors look dull on my tv, or as if it had a fog aesthetic to it and I wasn’t feeling that so I took it off and the game looks much better that way
