Re: NBA 2K23 Impressions Thread Last Gen (XB1,PS4,PC)

As this is currently on sale, thinking of picking it up on PS4.
Couple of bug bears from 22 can someone let me know if any of these have been fixed?

    1. Fouls or lack thereof
    2. Automatic makes from FT line when you get there with real Fg?
3.Pick and roll against the CPU still too exploitable?
    4. Help D by CPU. Do they actually leave the guy in the corner to help against the drive or still stay glued to him.

And any other thoughts on if this is a big enough step from 22.... thanks in advance

Playing a lot of CPU-CPU while slider testing and

      1. yes, I've seen decent amounts of fouls but I don't have the sliders set to default. Pretty sure I have shooting foul on 90. It's still a slider you'll have to tweak to find your preference of the number of fouls, because the game will still call more reach-in fouls than anything, and shooting fouls occur almost exclusively on drives/shots at the basket as opposed to jumpers.

      2. I have real FG% and have seen the CPU miss, I'm sure it depends on who's at the line though

      3. Most likely, I haven't played much with the sticks but it seems the pick and roll is still a tried and true method, which leads to:

      4. If you set this in coach settings, you're greeted with a double edged sword. You can either have your defender leave the guy in the corner and no one will rotate over or you can have your defender stay put and not help stop the drive. I think default is automatic and they probably do "no rotation" more often than not. The settings are in your coach's defensive settings (can be accessed during games from the pause menu and I forget where in MyLeague)

Hope this helps some, just my experiences so far.

By default, defenders are programmed to play close to *all* players on the perimeter, even poor/mediocre shooters, and hilariously at times literal non shooting bigs.

The result is that there is usually not a lot of 3s being taken in a game, along with a severe lack of help defense at the rim -- which does not at all resemble real NBA basketball (especially playoffs).

Edit: Something that has bothered me for a few years now is that a lot of teams are still running 3 out freelance by default. Nearly all teams should be running 4 out at this point. Some teams can run 5 out with certain lineups.

Edit2: The on-ball defense warping is pretty obvious this year. There are too many times where the defender is clearly beaten and the angle is open, and they somehow magically slide back and recover to push and guide you to the sides. Maybe this is a band-aid for the lack of help defense, but these pushes would be fouls in real life.

Do you see this with all teams or just the team that you play with? These statements make it seem like a overall game issue but the team that you are playing with or against should be considered when calling out a supposed issue. Which teams don't take threes?

I honestly feel like this game got a bit of a bum rap. I have a couple caveats to what im about to say. I had to adjust some sliders and also my impressions are coming from exclusively playing on Steam Deck with a smaller screen so certain graphic impressions might be skewed.

          1. Fouls are not a problem. Im one of the guys on OS that was screaming from the mountain tops about this issue the last few years. So for me to say they are in a good place i think means something. Good variety. Blocks. charges, shooting fouls on jumpshots. With 8 minute quarters i always get between 15-20 ft attempts both user and cpu. I do have maxed out sliders except for the reaching in foul slider though. The only thing i wish was a few more jumpshot fouls but im still getting more than ever. To be honest i think fouls are in a better place in this version than in the next gen version which ive also played a ton of.

2.i dont play real fg % so i dont know but they are harder with uset timing. Im not kidding when i say i couldve went 100% all of 2k22.

3.ive seen others have problems with pick and roll i just dont for some reason. This was another topic i was very vocal about in 2k21 and 22. Is it perfect? No but its not something that i ever think about how much it sucks like i did in 2k21 and 22.

          4. You definitely can get guys open if you run plays and picks. Guys drop the corner cover to help enough times. They do catch on though if you abuse it.

The one real downside is the cpu is way too hell bent on getting to the rim with default sliders. Real bloated PIP numbers and higher than normal shooting percentages because of it. The good news is its completely fixable with some good tendency sliders from the sliders forum.

I love using mods on PC but because I have a PS5 i abandoned last gen versions in 2k21 as they kept refusing to go next gen on PC. I played a bit of 2k21 on PC but i failed to see the point if i have a ps5.

This year because i have a Steam Deck i decided to get back into mods and i gotta say im in love with this version of 2k23. I pretty much exclusively play this and just really dont find many faults in it. I actually play this more than on PS5 but to be fair the mobility of the steam deck is a big factor. I also feel like graphically it looks really good. There is a lot more sliding than next gen but i dont see a huge drop off graphically but a lot of that is the smaller steam deck screen.

I completely understand how initially it feels like a roster update and its missing features of next gen etc... but damn there is an excellent game here and im thrilled i took the plunge.

Thanks for the response, I went ahead and picked it up during the sale.
I pretty much agree with all you say.
            Fouls are much improved.
I'm using timing on free throw attempts so that has fixed the never miss issue.
I don't really abuse p&r anyway, was just curious.
And yes help D seems much better if you jack the slider up and easier to get the d to collapse.
            So good times ahead.
I see people mentioning that the city unis were released but I don't see them when using the latest 2k rosters...is it only a next gen thing??

Why is their historical draft classes in the 40s? Players in them aren’t real right?

I uninstalled 2K23 and probably will not play it again this season.

I was playing as the Lakers going against the Nets on default HOF difficulty, and using just LeBron and Davis, the entire game the Nets rarely helped when I was literally scoring 90% at the rim. Even when LeBron was matched up against a small guard multiple times, there was zero help. Dunk after dunk.

You have a (should be) bad Lakers team that is very top heavy, and the rest of the players are very inconsistent or flat out terrible from the perimeter. No reason the Nets can't send aggressive help with some of their capable defenders and force other players to make shots instead of letting LeBron go in for easy points repeatedly (LeBron shouldn't be a 96 OVR at this point, but I won't go there).

That has been my experience with the game since day one. A complete lack of help defense and logical rotations. I know I can customize sliders, but it doesn't make enough of a difference. The AI is designed to play up close on all players on the perimeter and it is not close to resembling NBA defense.

                Maybe next year.

This year I can't exploit PnR defence like last year.
However I can't say that for the mismatch. This game has a problem of recognizing mismatches in the paint. I can back down smaller defender in the paint all day long and not a single defender won't come for the help. İt's been like this since idk 2k18? Like others said, defenders don't even sag off bad shooters. CPU plays tight defense on Ben Simmons beyond 3 point line. Lol
I feel like there were more defensive variations in 2k16,2k17.

Other than that, the game is balanced if you are not willing to exploit the defence which is hard thing to do in a very close game lol.
Wish PC was also next gen

i stopped playing for a month or so due to this exact reason man, but having tried last night again, it seems double teams back and AI on defense is smarter, u go have another try?

Hey guys, I haven't played 2K for a few years and I'm thinking of buying it for PS4 these days because of the offer until the end of month.

Any impressions on MyPlayer? I'm not planning on playing online or buying VC at all. Would that make it playable, satisfying or frustrating?

How's the progression without buying VC? A few years ago you could average a triple double by the middle of the first season.

                      Thank you

Mainly a PS5 user but always get the Switch version for the portability... Is there a way to get the lighting from Clutch Time (MyTeam Mode)? I've tried editing my teams arena design but had no luck.

The Switch version doesn't look the greatest but much much better with the lighting used in Clutch Time.

Don't make assumptions on 1 game man, sometimes like irl in the game a team plays really poorly and you play against the same exact team next time they are completely different. Just like irl. The team that you penetrated inside the paint next time could close the paint with clamps. Just like real NBA. Game to game performances should matter

Jr86- I'm on PC and have not received patch yet. Ronstech on YouTube posted a video about current gen patch where players are invisible when using most city jerseys and some of the city courts are missing court textures presenting just a grey background. Any issues for you?
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.
