A topic already exists that attempts to explain the numerous problems. In NBA2K25, things have evolved a bit, but overall the issue remains the same: it doesn’t work. Three menus, none of them complete, and all of them malfunctioning.

Below is an image showing that this existed in previous NBA2K games (and it worked well)

It's there and works on Xbox one and you can set it while the game is playing, during free throws and in-bounding the ball.

Dang, for real? I'm on PS5 and as far as I can tell, it's not there.

I guess that's sorta good news since it means it's supposed to be there and we can theoretically get a patch for it.

Can't see how this is good news. XBOX One is a completely different version isn't it? I'm afraid this is not a bug and they removed it by design. They fixed timeouts this year so they thought we have plenty of time now there to make these adjustments. Nothing comes as a surprise nowadays when it's about devs decisions. They wake up one morning and they decide to remove a feature out of the blue. They probably sat around a table and one of the devs said "Hey guys! I have a brilliant idea. Let's remove this feature! It's more realistic to have it only in timeouts. This way the user will also watch the cheerleaders more and dance to the dance cam. This is immersion!"
          And everyone applaud.

Why would they intentionally remove this from on console version but not another? That doesn't make sense.

Didn’t Czar say this was by design?

Surely not… why would it be? Even the manuals for the next gen version of the game show the right Dpad should still have this functionality. If it’s by design then that’s a terrible decision, likely made because they messed something up or it just didn’t work right and they couldn’t be bothered to fix it.

I mean even if 2K tries to say “oh you wouldn’t be able to make those adjustments without a timeout or end of quarter scenario, so we removed the ability to make those changes during live gameplay”, that would be a BS excuse because the offense is still allowed to make all their adjustments without a timeout or pause.

Another thing that annoys me (and it’s been present in 2k for years) is even when you make the adjustments during timeouts and scroll through those different options, there are a lot of blank options. Why not make it so that once you get to the end of the options, it goes back to the first one?

Edit: This is under the focus for a specific player. You can choose different defensive options, then there’s a bunch of “none” as you scroll through the options, then there’s one that says “gap shooter to prevent drive” followed by a bunch of “none” again until it cycles back to the beginning.

I wish we could overhaul the in-game on the fly menus altogether. It's been basically the same for as long as I can remember and feels limited and outdated.

I'd like to be able to adjust both offense/defense at any time (e.g. while I'm shooting free throws make a defensive adjustment or while the opponent is shooting free throws I would like to be able to change my freelance or call a play for my next possession) and not have to go into the options so often. It often feels like you have to sacrifice focusing on the gameplay to make an adjustment since you don't have access to everything during dead balls like they do in real life.

I think a cool solution would be something like this. If you hold a button down for 2-3 seconds, you switch to "coach mode" where the CPU takes over. A semi-transparent menu pops up that gives you full access to everything while the gameplay is going on in the background. You could do this in free throw routines or dead balls/during replays as well as during gameplay if you're willing to let the CPU handle a few possessions. It'd feel like "player switching to the coach" instead of taking me out of the game and ruining the immersion.

Don’t know for sure what the reason is…but I’d lean toward it messing something up if it’s indeed in the manual. Sometimes it’s moreso having to make a tough call rather than just not wanting to fix it. Hopefully we get some more detail down the road.

i mean if this is the decision so be it. but then they shouldve removed it from the controls menu. right now it is still listed there which leads to all the confusion.

Another problem with it being relegated only to timeouts is that even when you make those adjustments, your changes aren’t permanent (at least for the focus on player). I played a game yesterday when I set the defensive focus to Larry Johnson to “give it up.” The next timeout, I took the focus off him and left it on neutral. Then the next time there was a timeout, I checked and it reverted back to focus on Larry Johnson/give it up.

It wasn’t just this one game. It happens all the time. If we had control to do it in the fly, we could at least alleviate this. Makes no sense to have offensive adjustments on the fly but not defense.

Additionally, I’m unsure why the timeout menu only ever lets you adjust one side of the ball. Why are the offensive selections grayed out when you call a timeout sometimes, then the other times the defense is greyed out? Bug or intentional? Are NBA teams forbidden from discussing both offense and defense during timeouts?

I suspect it’s something to do with the way the coaching engine works, the game can’t process offense and defense at the same time.

Just so you know "by design" in game design speak doesn't always mean "we're happy with this" or whatever, it's just that y'all are probably onto something that it probably breaks something else etc. so it's been put in place this way.
